    POLITICAL PARTIES IN CANADA
Political parties provide the basis for Canadian government. Election choices are made simpler because Canadians can decide which candidate to vote for based on which party they wish to form the government. At this site you can connect to provincial parties and parties at work in federal politics
Political parties also structure most of work of the legislatures by organizing the members into disciplined blocs. As such, it is important to know what our political parties stand for, and how they are structured.

The guide includes non-government sources in both print and electronic format (accessible via the Internet) but does not include provincial and local material. Users are also encouraged to refer to " Canadian Government Information " for sources published by the Government of Canada. All the print materials listed are available from the National Library of Canada, which has unique collections of interest to political science researchers. For example political speeches, including a collection of federal Cabinet Ministers speeches on microfiche, which includes speeches of Leaders of the Opposition and covers the period from 1970 to the last five years and some earlier material dating back to the 1940's. The library also has a strong collection of Canadian political biographies and newsletters and periodicals of Canadian political parties.

The principles that have guided its growth include those of human dignity, responsibility, and individual freedom, within the framework of a just society. The Liberal Party embraces equality of opportunity for all persons, enhancement of our unique and diverse cultural community, recognition of Canada's two official languages, and preservation of the Canadian identity in a global society. The primary purpose of the New Democratic Party is to offer a vision for Canada where people come first; a clear democratic socialist political alternative. We seek to govern, to be a strong force electorally, so that we can implement our agenda of economic, political and social change. We recognize that our electoral success, whether as an opposition party in Parliament, as the balance of power, or as government, provides us with the opportunity for significant and lasting change. Canadian political parties fight over remedy for public health system Clifford Krauss NYT
Monday, May 17, 2004 TORONTO Canada's publicly financed health insurance system has already emerged as the dominant issue of the imminent national election campaign as the major political parties jostle at the starting gate. With the population aging, waiting lines for care growing, and doctors and nurses becoming sparse, especially in rural areas, opinion polls indicate that satisfaction with medical services has declined in the last decade. But a majority of Canadians still view their universal coverage system with pride - seeing it as a national resource that distinguishes Canada from the United States, where tens of millions go uninsured.
"There's no other issue of such vital and visceral significance to Canadians," said Prime Minister Paul Martin, who has been in office since Jean Chrétien stepped down in December and is looking for his own mandate, while touring the country this month. He has promised to "provide a fix" that will last for a generation.
