Use unpublished article to get a job?
Q: After freelancing for more than a year, I'm on a serious job hunt right now to re-enter the world of newspapers. The last freelance story I wrote really showcased my writing and would make a great clip. Unfortunately, the publication it's slated to be in said they are holding it for space reasons and can't give me a straight answer right away when it will run. (They already paid me for it). I'm under a time crunch and can't risk waiting until the story comes out. My question is it ok to send, along with my other pieces, one pre-published clip to a potential employer? Of course, I would state where it will be published and when. I understand this is more the exception than the rule, but is it also something that falls within the parameters of acceptability? Jenna A: Hey, send the pre-published clip if you're in such a rush. But why are you in such a rush? Is it your time table or the prospective employer's? If it is yours, I would cool my jets.

http://www.lightfoot.ca/glfacts.htm
"Lightfoot's masterpiece, 'Canadian Railroad Trilogy', was written from the inside-out. He wrote the slow middle first 'We are the naavies..' and then wrote the start and end portions around it."
"Affair On Eighth Avenue was inspired by a young German waitress who worked at the Playboy Club in New York City".
"In the 60's, Lightfoot hung out with some high-riggers working on Toronto's skyscrapers being constructed, to get to know them to write a song about their work. The result was 'Talkin' High Steel', which sadly was never released by Lightfoot."
"Lightfoot has acknowledged Bob Dylan as being one of his primary influences and Dylan, besides being a friend of Lightfoot's, is also a true admirer. In 1985 Dylan wrote in the liner notes to his Biograph box set, 'Gordon Lightfoot, every time I hear a song of his, it's like I wish it would last
forever.' High praise, indeed!"
"In 1971, Lightfoot refused to perform If You Could Read My Mind at that year's Grammy Awards, when the show's producers insisted he cut the song to 2 minutes from it's original 3 1/2 minutes."
"Lightfoot, with Red Shea and John Stockfish, recorded Back Here On Earth at Owen Bradley's 'Barn' near Nashville in a mere 4 days in September 1968."

The future for scholarships
Sports scholarships
Many students who are athletic want to know if there are sports scholarships in Canada. They hear about all the big money deals that are offered to college-bound athletes in the United States. The good news is that there are a number of sports scholarships in Canada. The bad news is that these awards aren't worth as much as those offered south of the border. In fact, sports scholarships are strictly regulated in Ontario colleges and universities. The reason for this is the problems that have emerged under the American way of handling scholarships. In the United States there are powerful "booster clubs" made up of alumni who want to see their old school, or "Alma Mater," continue to do well in sports. Further pressure is added because of lucrative television broadcasts of major college basketball and football games. These booster clubs raise millions of dollars each year to be used for athletic scholarships to attract gifted athletes to a college. In competing for athletes some colleges have been known to overlook entrance requirements so that gifted athletes who are poor students can gain admission. Because these students cannot handle the usual course load, special courses must be set up. There have even been reports of powerful coaches telling professors to pass an athlete with poor grades so that he can continue to play for the college. Some students discover that once they are injured and are no longer able to play they lose their scholarships.

25. 60s Odds And Ends
odds ends, Vol. After this album s release, these innocent American/canadian heartlandkids became rich LA rock stars and started snorting cocaine heavily
http://starling.rinet.ru/music/temp/60sodds.html
This page covers acts that I'm not familiar with beyond an album or two, but have listened to enough times to review. The '60s certainly were a unique decade musically - like any other. The acts covered below are only the beginning more will be covered soon. And I've still got three more decades to go.
The Jeff Beck Group: Beck-Ola (1969) ***
Of the major '60s guitar gods, Jeff Beck ranks somewhere below Hendrix and Clapton in public acclaim, and unlike his peers, his music rarely gets airplay on classic rock radio, though at guitar wizardry he's as adept as either - he's got a lacerating razorblade tone to his work that's more cutting edge than Clapton and more tastefully concise Hendrix; and his sharp corrosive lightning switchblade style probably had more to do with the invention of heavy metal than either. Overshadowed by Led Zeppelin's debut, Beck had already been doing the same thing a year earlier on 1968's Truth
The Bee Gees: The Bee Gees 1st (1967) ***
I know, I know the image that comes to mind is a trio of slightly balding, sleazily insincere dorks with gold medallions and polyster open-chest shirts latin-hussling down the boulevard to a cheesy soundtrack for seventies swingles to make out and snort cocaine to. Admit it - The Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack
And Now! (1966) **1/2

Day 3 - The CN Tower and the Store
Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 ... Assorted Pictures On the third day of our trip, we went to the CN Tower, as well as to The Bay , more commonly known as "the store" to all Today's Special fans. In the morning, Mom and I took a taxi to the CN Tower. Sarah was visiting a friend who worked at The Hospital for Sick Children, and so she could not come with us. Upon arrival at the CN Tower, which is right next to SkyDome, we went over a number of stairs, past a Planet Hollywood, and to where we changed our receipt for admission (we had paid for the tickets at the hotel) into real tickets, one of which you can see at right. We then proceeded up an escalator, and then it was to the high-speed elevator we went! We ascended to the large part of the CN Tower through the glass elevator, which took you from the bottom of the tower to the middle in 60 seconds. All I have to say is wow... that's a fast elevator. Upon our arrival up there, we took lots of pictures of the view from up there, from all angles. We got pictures of the city, we got pictures of the CN Tower's shadow, and we also got pictures of the Harbourfront, and of Lake Ontario. As we passed through the restaurant, we noticed some glasses

Dateline: Trinidad
Investigating a farmer's complaint that someone had stolen his livestock, puzzled police on the Caribbean island of Trinidad uncovered a collection of well-dressed animals. Police gave chase in Chaguanas in central Trinidad after spotting a rental vehicle with its headlights off. The driver abandoned the vehicle, and officers found a sheep in a dress, a goat in a shirt, pants and hat, and two more goats also in shirts and pants in the trunk. Police believe the thief had dressed the animals to fool people into thinking they were humans.
Dateline: Rhode Island The son of famed American-basher Nikita Khrushchev has applied to become an American citizen. Sergei Khrushchev, son of the late Soviet leader, has been teaching International Studies at Brown University in Providence, R.I., for several years. The 63-year-old scholar and his wife are scheduled to take a written test at the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service offices in Providence on June 23. "It is not so special or a political decision any longer," Sergei Khrushchev told reporters. At the height of the Cold War, the incendiary senior Khrushchev warned the United States, "We will bury you" and boasted that his country's rockets could hit a fly over the United States.
Dateline: New Jersey A firefighter was forced to give up his four Bruce Springsteen tickets after using his uniform to cut to the front of the line. Tickets for a series of concerts in The Boss' home state went on sale last week and have sold out quickly. Fans were alarmed, then, when a firetruck pulled up outside a Ticketmaster location in Newark, N.J., and disgorged several firefighters. Concerned ticket hopefuls asked what was going on and were informed that the firefighters needed to perform a fire inspection. While inside, one of the firefighters apparently purchased a block of four concert tickets. Angry fans complained, and the firefighter had his Springsteen privileges revoked.

http://weeklywire.com/ww/09-14-98/alibi_facts.html
By Devin D. O'Leary Dateline: Canada As billionaires continue to fail in their round-the-world ballooning attempts, an errant Canadian weather balloon appears unstoppable in its bid. Early last week, the unmanned 26-story balloon survived attempts by the Canadian Air Force to shoot it down. Two fighters pumped more than 1,000 rounds into the wayward balloon, but failed to bring it down over Nova Scotia. Badly off course and lacking a warning transponder, the balloon drifted all week in the North Atlantic, causing rerouting of commercial air traffic. By the weekend, the weather balloon was in Russian air space.
Dateline: Thailand The Auditor General of economically depressed Thailand discovered a long-forgotten 16-year-old bank account at the U.S. Federal Reserve containing more than a third of a billion dollars. No word yet on what the cash-strapped nation will do with the $367 million windfall. New furniture in the Auditor General's office seems likely, though.
Dateline: Ivory Coast Colonel Pascal Gbeh, 49, of Africa's Ivory Coast Army was killed while testing a "magic belt" supposedly endowed with the power to protect him from bullets, so long as he abstained from sex while wearing it. Gbeh apparently donned the belt and handed his service pistol to the son of the belt's maker to try it out. The young man shot Gbeh, who died instantly. Obviously, the Ivory Coast Army will not be adopting the "magic belt" anytime soon.
Dateline: Libya In what could be the least impressive award presentation in the world, Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi awarded Cuban dictator Fidel Castro his 1998 human rights prize. The award, named in honor of Gadhafi himself, was given in appreciation of Castro's "history of struggle."
