In addition, this site provides information on how to naturally improve overall health, strengthen the immune system, and slow the aging process. There is a list of physicians who use alternative treatments, a newsletter and book review section, and a product guide. To access this site: Click on the link above or at the bottom of this page. Odds and Ends Nitroglycerin and ANGINA Nitroglycerin breaks down into nitric oxide which helps relax blood vessels to improve blood flow. However, to accomplish this it robs the enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase from the mitochondria. This can cause premature aging, impaired healing, and all kinds of additional health problems. Studies indicate that long term use of nitroglycerin is bad for the heart and cardiovascular system. The amino acid arginine safely does the same thing but most doctors would never recommend an amino acid over a prescription. [Alternatives Vol 5, #17]

ODDS AND ENDS In the process of rolling up and shaping our Softlite ionomer foam products, we have a predictable supply of end cuts, cut-offs, or drops of various sizes and colors and shapes. We also occasionally have production over-runs As shown above our by-products typically take two forms: end cuts from cylinders-predominantly buoys and large fenders-shown above left and back cuts from fender railings such as we make for the USCG and Canadian CG 47 foot motor lifeboats or the Boston Whaler Impact series (see Fendering page for illustrations). The former can be an inexpensive source of buoyancy or they make good back stops for archery targets; the latter pieces make excellent dock fendering. The majority of the end-cuts vary from two to four feet (2' - 4') in diameter and two to four (2" - 4") inches thick with a one-and-a-half inch to four inch (1.5" - 4") hole in the center. One side will be flat from the cut and the other uneven from the roll-up. We sell these pieces in available sizes and colors for $0.50 a pound of buoyancy. The back-cut pieces we regularly have are Type M and Type W. Type M pieces (shown above center) are 3" thick and 7" tall in eight pound per cubic foot density black only, 53" long. Type W pieces are 2" thick hollow cylinder sections, 6" stand off by 15" tall in five pound per cubic foot density, gray and some other colors on occasion, 53" long.

Odds 'n Ends Kit Fill a small yogurt container or baby food jar with a bunch of 'odds and ends' such as finishing nails, roofing nails, screws, washers, bolts, copper wire, etc (anything you have laying around the basement workbench that looks like it could be useful). Guaranteed you'll carry it for years without even opening it, but when you finally need one of the items to put a canoe seat back together or re-fasten a broken thwart, you'll be glad you have it. Although the glass referred to was probably graduated for about three or five minutes a half-hour glass was used aboard ship until 1857 to mark the passage of time. The ship's bell was struck at the time of turning the glass, a custom instituted in the 13th century. Records indicate that tobacco was introduced in the navy in 1798, mostly for chewing, although we read that in later years informal meetings of a smoking circle about a smoking lantern were held on the upper deck in fine weather, at other times in the galley. The U.S. Navy refers to this smoking lantern in lieu of our stand easy and out pipes. Mention has been made elsewhere of the silver chain and boatswain's call now worn in lieu of a lanyard by men of the quartermaster branch. A silver whistle and chain have also played a part in military as well as naval command. For some centuries this item of regalia has been part of the military bandolier, now rarely seen except in ceremonial parades of historic regiments.

By Devin D. O'Leary Dateline: South Korea On the plus side, they've got nowhere to go but up. Kuwait's national ice hockey team broke into the record books by giving up an astonishing 79 goals in just two games early last week at the Winter Asian Games in Yongpyong, South Korea. On Sunday, Kuwait lost to China 44-1. On Monday, the team followed it up with a 35-0 shutout against Japan. Although Kuwaiti coach Bruce Smitha Canadian nationaldescribed the loss to Japan as "the longest game of my life," player Al-Ajmi Salem did manage to score the first goal ever by any Arab country in an international hockey match during Sunday's loss to China. "It was a great moment for Kuwait hockey in an otherwise dark day," said Smith.
Dateline: Germany A German court ruled last Tuesday that two male slave workers forced into labor by the Nazis during World War II were, indeed, eligible for government pensions. Previously, higher German courts had said that without proper pension contributions being made, no pension could be paid out. In their groundbreaking decision, the Düsseldorf Court for Social Issues ruled that "under the Nazi regime of terror, these criteria would be impossible." The judgment could open the way for other forced laborers to apply for pension payments for the period when they worked as slaves.
Dateline: Canada In what was surely a well-planned tribute to the Three Stooges, three suspects made one of the shortest breaks for freedom as they were led from a police van to a court appearance in Ontario last Monday. The trio's spontaneous escape attempt ended a few seconds later when, forgetting they were shackled together, the men passed on either side of a lamp post. The three suspects collided in a comic heap and were quickly subdued by police.

Jack Raso, MS,RD, exposes Nature's Sunshine subterfuge of practicing medicine and pharmacy without licensing as they employ invalid methods of assessment such as "applied kinesiology" and iridology to diagnose and prescribe herbal products for various diseases and conditions. Practitioners are taught to ostensibly evade the law by "teaching" rather than diagnosing. Raso's article, "The shady business of Nature's Sunshine," appeared in the May/June, 1992 Nutrition Forum. Dateline: Papua New Guinea And you thought road rage was bad? A personal dispute in rural Papua New Guinea culminated with one angry man tearing out the eyes, testicles and heart of his neighbor and eating them. Villagers at the Ono Works camp east of Madang watched in horror as Moropia Silkapi, 35, attacked the body of Yakamup Makatu, 55, and cannibalized the choice bits. Apparently the two villagers began arguing earlier in the day. Things reached a fever pitch when Makatu's house burned to the ground. Then the cannibalism began. "Silkapi caught Makatu and smashed his head with a rock, killing him. He then ate him," explained Police Superintendent Ben Simanjon. Silkapi was chased into the bush by villagers and tied to a tree to await police. Unfortunately, Makatu's angry relatives arrived first, killing the hot-headed cannibal. Three of the relatives were arrested.
Dateline: England Thanks to a mix-up in primary colors, some Yorkshire residents may have received love letters this Valentine's Day scented with something other than perfume. Seems that mistaken mailers in a Yorkshire park have been stuffing their letters into a large red bin intended for dog waste. A local building firm accidentally supplied a red doggie do bin instead of the customary green one. Red is a color reserved for English mail boxes.
Dateline: France Is it the deep existential angst or merely the ennui? According to a Sofres opinion poll published last Thursday, almost a third of French adults have considered suicide at on time or another. Of 1,000 adults polled, 13 percent had "seriously" thought about killing themselves while a further 19 percent had thought about it "vaguely." One percent of those surveyed late last month said they "often" seriously considered heading for the great brasserie in the sky. Some 160,000 Frenchmen commit suicide every year.

They Came to Yellowknife
If you look up Yellowknife in a 1935 world atlas, at least one published in the U. S., you'll come up empty-handed. The provincial capital of the North West Territories, an area covering well over a million square miles, does not appear on the map or in the index. Yet the area's been visited often down through the millennia.
First to arrive, as the 4th (Wisconsinian) glacial period receded across the North American continent, were the Hay River and the Slave River. Arising on the eastern slope of British Columbia's Rocky Mountains the Hay River flowed generally north-northeast. The Slave River, coming out of Alberta and Saskatchewan's Athabasca Lake flowed north-northwest. Their paths crossed at a irregularly-shaped,11,000 square mile glacier-gouged depression in the earth's surface and their waters created the eleventh largest lake in the world. Great Slave Lake. And when the depression had filled with their waters, the overflow gouged or followed a path northwestward across the plains and tundra, eventually emerging into the Arctic Ocean at a point about a hundred miles to the east of the Alaskan border. The stage was set for human visitors.
The area around the southern shore of the lake was settled by the Slavey band. So named by the Cree and Chipewyan tribes, who often took members of the band prisoner and made bondsmen of them, they would leave their unflattering name on the area, in the name of a river and as the Great Slave Lake. Those on the northern shore were known as the Yellowknife due to the copper found in the metal of their knife blades, giving their name to the city.

Frozen Assets
The seeds of Michael Lok's downfall (as well as his rise) were sewn even before he was born. We could backtrack all the way to the 1492 first voyage of Columbus, but going back to 1497 will suffice.
It was on May 20th of that year that Italian explorer Giovanni Caboto, his name Anglicized to John Cabot by his English bosses, sailed from Bristol, possibly with his three sons in the ship Matthew. He sighted Newfoundland and sailed on to discover Hudson's Bay, which he mistook for the fabled Northwest Passage. He then spent the summer sailing down the North American coast to a point well south of New England before returning home. For this he received the munificent sum of 10 pounds from Henry VII. Henry might have been more appreciative if Cabot had returned with spices but Newfoundland provides few of the highly-valued plants.
At the end of the fifteenth century the New World was just that. Not knowing of the existence of the Gulf Stream, which brought a warm climate to the British Isles, the English expected that waters at the top of the North American continent, being about the same latitude as Britain, would share a similar climate.
Thus far the New World had proved a commercial flop. Europe would have to look to Asia and to Africa for profits. Luckily, the power of the

Paul Bunyon
A legendary folklore hero of the lumber camps of the American Northwest, with enormous strength and cunning. The stories have Paul Bunyon and his giant blue ox, called Babe, creating the most significant or even the North American continent such as the Grand Canyon. There are many theories to explain the origin of the tales, including:
  • From French-Canadian sources.
  • From European sources.
  • Created by a logging company early in the twentieth century.
The earliest known publication of some Paul Bunyon tales was in a newspaper in 1910. There is a suitably huge statue of Paul Bunyon and Babe in the redwood forests of northern California, I think possibly alongside the Avenue of the Giants
