Canadian Military seeks Star Wars role
Axworthy, Eggleton headed for clash over $600M investment
Dave Pugliese,
Ottawa Citizen
The Canadian military wants to take part in a controversial U.S. plan to build a North American ballistic missile defence shield by contributing more than $600 million in space hardware. Canadian Forces officials have been pushing for a role in the American national missile defence system since 1997, according to Access to Information documents obtained by the Citizen. Under the Canadian military plan its participation in the system would be deemed an "asymmetrical" role, where Canada would not directly fund the American missile defence shield but provide a variety of space and ground equipment for surveillance and other jobs to support the North American Aerospace Defence Command, or NORAD. NORAD currently does the job of watching over American and Canadian airspace. According to the documents, the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff want NORAD to take a key controlling role in the missile defence system if the Canadian government approves Canadian Forces participation. Canadian participation in the American system, which would involve the construction of interceptor missiles capable of destroying ballistic rockets headed toward North America while they are still in space, was also recommended at a high-level meeting during a government retreat in Merrickville in November. That meeting involved Canadian military officials and government policy specialists.

Question:
I received a foreign award. May I wear it on my uniform?
Answer:
Canadian honours policy requires Government approval before an order, decoration or medal can be awarded to one of its citizens. Canada will not approve the honour for wear unless it emanates from a head of state or government. Except for courtesy reasons at the time of presentation, honours, unless approved by the Government Honours Policy Committee, cannot be worn with other national honours or on a Canadian Forces uniform. Edith Landells-Lees
In Memoriam
It is with great sadness that we report the passing of our friend Edith Landells-Lees. The Military Nurses of Canada was Edith's vision and occupation during the last many years. Without her dedication, this important piece of Canadian History would not exist. Thanks to her, many historians and nurses from this time forward will have access to the personal experiences of those Women and Men who undertook the practice of nursing in a Military Environment, and during times of great duress such as wars and peacekeeping missions around the globe. Edith pursued a Military Nursing career in the Canadian and American military until she retired, and then continued her committment to her career in compiling this history and memorial to Military Nurses of Canada. The work occupied at least 13 years of her later life, and it stands as it's own marker of her dedication to compassionate service for her fellow human beings. The Military Nurses of Canada is a 3-volume compilation of personal recollections of Canadian military nurses from World War I to present day active duty nurses. Included is a history of the beginning of Canadian military nursing during the 1885 North West Rebellion.

A "Mountie". All are familiar international identifiers of our `True North Strong and Free'. The image of the red-coated Mountie in broad-brimmed Stetson hat is instinctively associated with Canada around the world. But there is more to the Mounties than just a romantic image. The stage was set in 1873 for a role that would intimately connect the Mounted Police and its members with the development of Canada as a great nation. From the beginning of its long history, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have served Canada and its people by establishing law and order in the frontier reaches of this vast nation. As the country grew in population and diversity, and its communities became more established, the Mounted Police adapted, ensuring the peace and security for its citizens.

Captain Rosella Bjornson and First Officer Lee O'Riley on their Pink Zip B737 (how perfect!). Almost an entire female crew. Rosella told us "It (this flight with Lee) was the first time since I was hired (by an airline) in 1973 that I had flown with another female airline pilot. When I was with Canadian Airlines, we had 12 female pilots and Air Canada before the merger had 60 female pilots. They have since hired a few so I think Air Canada had about 80 female pilots out of 3200 males. In Edmonton we have a total of 50 pilots and I am the only woman."
