Threat of foreign ownership of Canada's media sparks protest in Victoria by Dirk Meissner
Source : Canadian Press March 8, 2004
VICTORIA (CP) - The threat of increased foreign ownership of Canada's media and telecommunications industries is destined to become an election issue that will dog Prime Minister Paul Martin, culture and labour groups said Monday. Canadians fear they could lose their most important means of communicating with each other if the Martin Liberals relax foreign ownership regulations, the groups said as they launched a countrywide campaign. "What the loosening of domestic ownership requirements would mean would be that essentially we'd be working for the Americans and telling other people's stories and not our own," said Steve Waddell, Alliance of Canadian Cinema Television and Radio Artists spokesman. "We say to Mr. Martin and his government: Don't do it. Keep Canada Canadian." The Liberals are considering whether to abolish foreign ownership restrictions on cable companies, but the unions and cultural groups fear cable companies are only the start and it wouldn't be long before it's open season on the entire Canadian media and broadcasting industry. "The federal government has protected Canadian media and communications from foreign control for over 80 years. All we're basically asking is for them to continue to do so," said Ian Morrison, Friends of Canadian Broadcasting spokesman.
