April 07, 2004 For immediate release Ottawa – Candidates Ed Broadbent, David Chernushenko and Richard Mahone will discuss foreign ownership of Canadian media and communications companies at an Ottawa Centre all-candidates meeting sponsored by Friends of Canadian Broadcasting, the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers, Canada’s largest media union, and ACTRA. Mike Murphy and Stuart Ryan are not able to participate. When: 7:30 pm, Thursday, April 8, 2004 Where: Dining Room, National Press Club, 165 Sparks Street, Ottawa Why: Canadian broadcasting, cable and telecommunications companies could soon be up for sale to foreign interests. Canadian Smallpox Contingency Plan (Summary)
Emergency response to an outbreak of smallpox
Published by authority of
The Minister Of Health Canada This document revises the Canadian Quarantine Contingency Plan. Centre For Emergency Preparedness And Response Population And Public Health Branch
Executive Summary
Smallpox is a devastating, contagious, life-threatening disease with no cure and a fatality rate of approximately 30%. Its clinical course includes numerous painful, deep pustules throughout the skin that become filled with foul-smelling puss, burst, and leave pitted scars ("pock marks"). Complications include encephalitis and blindness. Global eradication of naturally occurring smallpox was declared by the World Health Assembly in 1980. Stocks of the smallpox virus, variola, are officially stored in maximum-security laboratories in the United States and Russia, although there are unconfirmed reports that unauthorized stocks may also be stored elsewhere. The deliberate or accidental release of the smallpox virus into today's largely unvaccinated and highly mobile population would wreak far-reaching havoc in medical, social, and economic terms. The World Health Organization regards even a single case of smallpox anywhere worldwide as a global health emergency.

What is Faith and the Media?
Faith and the Media was formed in Winnipeg in 1996 in order to work with the media and faith groups to improve coverage of faith in Canada. In 1998 the group organized Canada's first national conference on the issue; the conference, which was sponsored by 35 faith groups and media organizations, brought together 270 journalists and representatives at Carleton University School of Journalism in Ottawa. Plenary addresses from that conference are on this site. Among the recommendations of the national conference was the establishment of a permanent centre to address the issue of how the media covers faith, and to help religious groups be better prepared to work with the media. Today we are happy to say that the creation of such a Centre is in the planning stages in Calgary, under the guidance of former Calgary Herald Religion Editor Gordon Legge, and with the support of a variety of academic groups in Calgary and elsewhere. The vision of the Centre is to:
