CANLIT-L Canadian Literature Discussion Group
CANLIT-L is a bilingual discussion group on Canadian literature, literary publishing and Canadian children's literature. The purpose of the list is twofold. It is an opportunity for better communication among writers, publishers, professional associations, librarians, archivists, students, professors, and interested readers, and we hope that there will be lively discussions about particular works, writers, trends, literary theories, and the study and teaching of Canadian literature, among other topics. For individual researchers, the opportunity to ask questions and receive answers about resources for the study of Canadian literature (for example, the location of a particular writer's papers) will encourage more effective research and better appreciation of Canada's literature. Participants are invited to post questions, comments, book reviews, concerns, ideas, information (e.g., announcements of readings, lectures, new courses, new acquisitions of literary papers, etc.) and suggestions for helping to ensure that this list meets the needs of the Canadian literary community. To subscribe to CANLIT-L:

Canadian Literature in English
page: Since the 1960s, Canadian gay and lesbian writers have produced a vibrant body of fiction, nonfiction, drama, and poetry. The Problem of Identity Canadian gay literature is almost a contradiction in terms. Frequently written by authors born in the United States and published there as well, it is difficult to distinguish from writing in more dominant English-speaking cultures. Caught between the traditionally overwhelming influence of British culture and, more recently, the powerful stranglehold of American literature, the Canadian voice (gay or straight) is hard to hear. Sponsor Message.
Marginalized, outnumbered, and patronized (when it is not simply neglected), this voice is often, not surprisingly, ironic. Even within the Library of Congress classification system, Canadian literature has an ambiguous place. In some libraries, it is still "PR," that is, a subspecies of Commonwealth Literature; and in others it is now "PS," that is, a subspecies of American. To be a Canadian writer of any kind, in other words, is to be "queer" in a world where the definitions are made elsewhere.

`Margaret Avison is a national treasure. For many decades she has forged a way to write, against the grain, some of the most humane, sweet and profound poetry of our time.' Imagine a small publisher that, instead of gluing its pages into the spines of books (thereby making it likely that the book will one day disintegrate), sews the pages together so that they'll never fall apart. Ripostes: Reflections
on Canadian Literature
Philip Marchand Ripostes is a collection of essays on some salient features of the Canadian literary landscape, a number of which were first published in the Toronto Star, many of which appear in these pages for the first time. Included are essays on Atwood, Findlay, Ondaatje and Margaret Laurence, as well as thematic explorations of Canadian literature such as an account of the demise of the Survival school of Canadian writing, a look at the recent history of the Writers' Union of Canada, an examination of the role of fathers in Canadian fiction, a study of the strange attraction of many of our writers to the occult, and so on. The tone is considered, and critical rather than celebratory, although the essays are respectful of the genuine achievements of Canadian literature in the past few decades. They try to clear the air, as it were, of boosterism, political correctness, and other attitudes which hinder the appreciation and reception of good writing. This is an honest re-appraisal of Canadian literature, undertaken at a time when we need no longer be overcome with relief and euphoria over the fact that some of our authors are now world famous, or at least world famous in Hoboken, New Jersey.
