Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition How to describe the literature Literature is literally or not literally "an acquaintance with letters" (as in the first sense given in the Oxford English Dictionary), but has generally come to identify a collection of texts. Nations can have literatures, as can corporations, philosophical schools or historical periods. It is commonly held that a literature of a nation, for example, is the collection of texts which make it a whole nation. The Hebrew Bible,

It is bordered by the United States to the south as well as in the northwest. The Canada-U.S. border is the world's longest undefended border. The country stretches from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west. Canada also reaches the Arctic Ocean in the north where Canada's territorial claim extends to the North Pole.

English Canadian Literature
When Isabella Valancy Crawford and her family arrived in the town of Paisley, Upper Canada in the late 1850s, rumours soon began to surface about the qualifications and competence of her physician father. Following a minor local scandal (embezzlement was hinted at), the family moved, first to Lakefield then to Peterborough. When her father died in 1875, Crawford moved with her mother and sisters to Toronto, where she began writing in an attempt to add to the family's severely limited income. The writer's life then, as now, proved a difficult one. Even in her three best years the young poet did not earn a significant amount, selling about forty poems for between $1 and $3 apiece. In 1884 she risked her own money to publish her only collection of poems, Old Spookses' Pass, Malcolm's Katie, and Other Poems. Although it was a critical success, garnering good reviews in newspapers and magazines in Canada, the United States, and England, the book was a financial disaster, selling only about fifty copies. Crawford died of a heart attack only three years later. Ironically, many of the poems included in this single ill-fated collection have in this century become standards in university and high-school English courses across Canada as well as abroad. Old Spookses' Pass is one of the more than 800 selected books of poetry ,fiction, biography, and travel reproduced as part of this diverse on-line collection. Chosen from the more than 10,000 titles listed in CIHM's reference guide to English-Canadian literature, this selection has been fashioned to provide readers and researchers from a variety of disciplines with a sense of the wide range of literacy activities, tastes, and skills that shaped (and were shaped by) the Canadian imagination prior to the turn of the century. Whether searching for the first novel written by a native Canadian (Julia Catherine Beckwith Hart's St. Ursula's Convent, 1824) or for more sensational tales of discovery and danger in the Cariboo goldfields, visitors to this site will be able to enjoy many of the rarest English-language Canadian books held in libraries across the country.

" African Canadian literature is a wonderful mixture of the words of those born here, and those who have come. Often it is about change, and acts as a bridge between "here" (Canada) and "there" (where one comes from). It is this marriage of diversities that gives the literature of African Canadians its energy." MARGARET LAURENCE: THE FIRST LADY OF CANADIAN LITERATURE
From the First Unitarian Church of Ottowa.
Jean Margaret (Peggy) Wemyss was born in Neepawa, Manitoba, on July 18, 1926, to Robert Harrison Wemyss, a lawyer, and his wife Verna Jean, née Simpson. Verna died when Peggy was four years old, and Robert later married Verna's sister, Margaret Campbell Simpson, a teacher and later a librarian, who was throughout the years one of Peggy's "greatest encouragers.” After Robert Wemyss's death, when Peggy was 9 and her brother still a baby, the family went to live with Grandfather Simpson in his big brick house on First Avenue.
The Neepawa Press in the summer of 1943. Miss Mildred Musgrove, her English teacher, gave her valuable criticism and encouragement during her school years. In a letter written in 1983, Margaret stated, "I was an extremely fortunate child. As someone who has always been interested in reading and in writing (which I began to do in about Grade 2 or 3), I always had someone there who encouraged me."
