Women of European heritage were encouraged to become teachers, although their salaries were half those paid to their male counterparts. Dr. Emily Howard Stowe was born on May 1, near Brantford, Ontario. A teacher and physician, she later became the first woman principal in Canada. Because of the need for teachers, more women than ever before were allowed into Normal Schools, the teacher training institutions. Universities in the Maritime provinces were the first to admit women as students: Mount Allison in New Brunswick in 1862, Acadia University in Nova Scotia in 1880, and Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia in 1881. 50% of Canada's teachers were women. Grace Annie Lockhart was awarded a bachelor's degree in Science and English Literature from Mount Allison University in New Brunswick, the first degree awarded to a woman in Canada and in the British Empire. Dr.Jennie Trout returned to Canada from the United States with a medical degree, becoming the first licensed woman physician in Canada. The first kindergarten, established as part of a public school system, was opened in the Louisa Street School in Toronto. Ada Marean was the teacher of the class of 80 children. She had seven teachers-in-training assisting her.

Canadian Eskimo Dog Team History With a formidable past and sometimes, an uncertain future, this Canadian Kennel Club recognised breed has survived as one of Canada's only indigenous dog breeds for over 2000 years. Closely related to the Greenland dog, and deriving from the Thule Inuit Culture of the Canadian North and Greenlandthe Canadian Eskimo Dog has been called by many names throughout historyGronlandshund, Inuit Husky, and by the InuitQimmiq... A proud breed by any name, this breed has survived in some of the harshest terrain in the world, sharing the struggle, and later the accomplishments, of its human counterparts in survival and adventure. Eskimo dogs have served nearly all the famous names in arctic and Antarctic exploration. Beautiful, proud, loyal and kind, the Canadian Eskimo Dog (CED) was historically a draft animal and all around worker. The breed was used for sledding and packing, and also as a hunting dog for the Inuit. In some parts of the Canadian North these dogs are still found sniffing out seal-breathing holes or holding the polar bear at bay during hunts. It would be hard to envision the ancient Inuit people coping with the polar conditions without these dogs.

    Synopsis
The flag of highest rank, per the standards referenced, is that of the Sovereign, who is also head of the British Commonwealth. Her flag is flown only on her places of residence and when at official functions within Canada. Other members of the royal family may be represented by their flags when in residence or on official duties in Canada, and then only the flag of the highest ranking royalty present. Note, the sovereign's flag to which I refer is the Queen's Canadian standard. Next in rank is the Governor-General, who is the Queen's representative. His flag is flown at residence and office and when on official functions. Similarly, there is the standard of the Lt. Governor, whose flag has highest rank in each Province. The rules governing the display of the Governor-General's flag apply here as well. The order of next rank is the Canadian flag itself.
