A Legal History
Quota pars operis tanti nobis committur? - Seneca Memory - A practical quality which allows us to weigh what has already been done against what might be done now. Memory is therefore a key to responsible action....Romanticism is a fantasized version of the past. Unpleasant events and personal or national failures are erased, while comforts and successes are exaggerated. Or wrongs may be exaggerated and comforts and successes erased. On either side romanticism is intended to energize false hopes. In its most exaggerated form it denies the relevance of memory and constructs free-standing abstract ideologies. - John Ralston Saul what's new at this archive, the last modification having been made on 27 November, 2001 (always check what's new first!!), or go to the top of the archive

The Library of Congress classification system classes Canadian history in (F1150 is approximate), between the states of the U.S. and Mexico. This is based on a decision made a long time ago (around 1900), which no doubt seemed logical then, but which like many other such decisions, failed to allow for later development. A number of Canadian libraries found the LC scheme inadequate for their collections. Starting in the 1940s at the University of British Columbia, a schedule was developed using the numbers , which follow LC's numbers for South America. The edition of this schedule that is still on hand is dated 1967. By that date, or sometime earlier, F5000-F5999 was adopted for use at Queen's. ( is still used for the Canadian pamphlets in the Lorne Pierce Collection.) For various reasons the F5000-F5999 range too was found inadequate. In the 1970s a whole new schedule was developed in class FC . This was adopted at Queen's around 1976 to replace the F5000s, and has been used since. (Problems can also arise with certain FC numbers, however. See the section on

Over 125,000 Canadian personnel have served in peacekeeping operations for the United Nations; this is more than any other country. Although the UN began deploying peacekeepers as early as 1948, the term “peacekeeping” itself was not broadly used until 1956 when it was popularized by former Canadian Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson.

Edited by Doug Owram. Toronto: University of Toronto Press 1994. Pp. xx, 418. $47.50 cloth, $19.95 paper by Miriam Wright Memorial University of Newfoundland For anyone who has ever felt just a little intimidated by the flood of new Canadian historical literature that has appeared in the past few decades, or frustrated by an apparent lack of material on a particular subject, the new handbook, Canadian History: A Reader's Guide, offers a way out of the confusion. The books consist of essays written by notable Canadian historians on published works in English or French. The set is not merely a bibliographic listing of books and articles, however. The authors also make brief assessments of the literature, and give a sense of the direction of Canadian historiography, the key themes, debates, and controversies. Aimed primarily at students, this two-volume set supersedes A Reader's Guide to Canadian History, 1: Beginnings to Confederation, edited by D.A. Muise, and A Reader's Guide to Canadian History, 2: Confederation to the Present, edited by J.L. Granatstein and Paul Stevens.
The volume contains a number of research aids that students will find helpful. Each chapter begins with clearly marked sections discussing general works on the region, reference material, periodicals, and published documents. A fairly detailed table of contents and an extensive subject index also provide some guidance.
