Introduction
Canadian history is no longer being viewed as a boring subject, but there does still appear to be a need for sites like this one. Thank you, teachers, students, professors, lovers of history, and fellow Web historians, for writing to let me know how useful you find it. I was inspired to create this site by an interview with Jack Granatstein on CBC He had just published his book, Who Killed Canadian History? He emphasizes the importance of studying Canadian history in Canadian schools. As a student, many years ago, with a somewhat idealized view of things, I felt that our teacher was really limiting our understanding of the events. I got quite upset at the treatment of Louis Riel Riel is now an icon for the problems not only of oppressed individualism but of oppressed cultures in general and his death is one of the central issues in understanding Canada and the problems it faces in the future. here (or here ) for an American author, James Loewen, who feels as I do.

The Governor General's Award for Excellence in Teaching Canadian History
Recent finalists include Linda Bulka from Winnipeg whose Canadian History students use Youth Link - an Internet link - to communicate in both official languages with students in Quebec, Ontario and Alberta. Role-play, field trips, document research, interviews and debates inspire her classes. Donald Holmgren's classes in Ashmont, Alberta, are 80% aboriginal. Since 1987 his students participate in project Anis-Katch in which they record and chronicle their interviews with community elders to foster a deeper appreciation of their cultural heritage. Yann Herry from Whitehorse organizes exchange trips to Quebec City where his classes recreate the battle of the Plains of Abraham, perform role-plays and visit historical sites. This Award encourages and recognizes excellence in the teaching of Canadian history, rewards teachers' and schools' initiative and innovation, and promotes the sharing of great history teaching ideas. Twelve finalists receive $500 and an all-expense paid trip for two to Ottawa for the awards ceremony at Rideau Hall. Not only do participants receive recognition from the Governor General himself, but the weekend includes numerous activities to learn about your colleagues' innovative teaching practices and to tour the National Capital Region.

. . . a Canadian journal of non-Canadian history
The Canadian Journal of History/Annales canadiennes d'histoire is published in April, August, and December . It is a peer-reviewed scholarly journal of international stature published at the University of Saskatchewan since 1966. The Journal publishes high-quality articles, historiographical articles, review articles, and reviews concerning all countries and periods of history - excepting the history of Canada , which we leave to other Canadian journals.
A Journal of History
The Canadian Journal of History publishes general history articles and reviews by scholarly specialists in their fields of research, intended for the specialist historian of any field. Leading scholars have bemoaned the "fragmentation" of academic understanding today. Historians can barely keep up with the fast pace of new research in their own specialized fields how are they to keep up in others? The Canadian Journal of History offers one way to do so, by publishing articles and reviews in every field of history: European, Asian, African, and American; intellectual, social, legal, and diplomatic; ancient, medieval, modern, and contemporary. The only field we do not cover is the history of Canada itself.

A secondary source interprets and analyses primary sources. Secondary sources are one step removed from the event. Some examples are: textbooks, journal articles, histories, criticism, commentaries and encyclopedias. Examples of secondary sources in Canadian history are: Britain and the Origins of Canadian Confederation, 1837-67
