Gold rush canoeing expedition on the Yukon River I mmerse yourself in the history of the gold rush on this 13 day canoeing expedition down the Yukon River. The Yukon River is a living museum, where along the banks lie relics of the past Klondikers who used this waterway as a main route to the large gold deposits discovered in the area a hundred years ago. Beginning in the town of Carmacks, you will explore the well-preserved historical sites along the way. The area is very remote and offers some great wildlife viewing opportunities including possible sightings of bears, moose and eagles. T he last days of the trip will be spent in historic Dawson City, where you will have a chance to visit historical sites such as Jack London's cabin, the Gaslight Follies, the Palace Grand Theatre and Diamond Tooth Gerties. Season: July 11, 2004 to July 23, 2004

Police and the Klondike Gold Rush Treaty 8 in Fort Chipewyan The Hudson's Bay Company sold its territories to the Dominion of Canada in 1870. The federal government sent agents into the Northwest Territory to define and take control of its new property and exercise the jurisdiction of the Crown. First to arrive were surveyors for the Geological Survey of Canada, mapping travel routes and mineral riches which the Survey hoped would encourage mining to "develop" the north. The Dominion Land Survey followed in the early 20th Century by university professors and their students. I find the Klondike Gold Rush history both facinating and compeling, so I've put together a list of my recommendations for good reads related to Alaska, the Yukon and the Gold Rush of 1898. Enjoy! BMO Nesbit Burns Highlights Gold Rush in Red Lake District Of Western Ontario.
So much news is forthcoming from Canada about the search for the elusive kimberlitic diamond up in the arctic wastes of Nunavut, that it sometimes appears that junior gold explorers have given up. Not so say brokers BMO Nesbitt Burns in its latest Weekly Gold Monitor which focuses on exploration in the Red Lake District of Ontario. In fact they reckon that the Red Lake greenstone belt in western Ontario has now been staked in its entirety by some majors and a lot of juniors. Interestingly Newmont seems to be showing a lot of interest in the Birch Uchi belt which is the eastern extension of the Red Lake belt. It has not undergone a lot of exploration and is considered to have the same geology and potential as Red lake. This is just as well as Newmont, under its new management, is said to be only interested in deposits of 25 million ounces or more and these certainly do not appear every day of the week. Review by Ian Stewart. excerpt:
Women have made their minds up to go to the Klondike, so there is no use trying to discourage them...our wills are strong and unfailing. There are a few things, however, women should carefully consider before starting on this really perilous journey. First of all, delicate women have no right attempting this trip. It means utter collapse. Those who love luxury, comfort, and ease would better remain at home. It takes strong, healthy courageous women to stand the terrible hardships that must necessar ily be endured.... Annie Hall Strong

Gold rush: U.S. age groupers claim 12 titles at world's
    By Timothy Carlson
    Senior Correspondent
This report filed July 22, 2001

The United States may have lost its grip on professional triathlon since the days of the Big Four, but its fountain of masters-plus age group triathletes still gives it a stranglehold on the amateur triathlon world. Saturday at the 13th ITU World Olympic distance triathlon championships at Hawrelak Park in Edmonton, the United States led all nations with 12 golds. Host Canada was runner-up with five, Great Britain third with four, Australia next with three and Germany with two golds. Bolivia, France, the Republic of South Africa and Sweden each garnered one gold apiece in the 1.5km swim, 40km bike and 10km run on a day of mixed weather in midsummer Alberta, Canada. America's 12-gold total included: Willie Stewart, a star cross-country skier competing with one arm in the physically challenged division, won the category overall with a 2:18:11 time, beating below-the-knee amputee winner Paul Martin, also of the United States, by a 4:49 margin. Stewart took the lead from Martin at the first of three run laps, cruising in with a blazing 36:33 run, 8:10 faster than Martin, who just finished a record 10:41 at Ironman Roth two weeks prior. Des Nunan of the USA whipped the U.S.'s perennial world medalist in 45-49, Jim Bruskewitz, by a 54-second margin with a stellar 2:02:30 finish.

Edwin Howard Armstrong December 2003 GOLD-RUSH NEWSLETTER Update report from GOLD Committee Chair Anoop Alazhathu Dear Friend, We have had an exciting year, and it is fast coming to a close. Since its launch in 1998, the GOLD program has been, in a big way, instrumental in involving the ‘Young Professional’ with the IEEE. This year, we marked the 5 th anniversary of the GOLD program by honoring the past Chairs of the GOLD groups with the past-Chair pin. These people have slogged it out to start off GOLD groups in many Sections, and it is thanks to these extra-ordinary volunteers that the GOLD program is where it is today. Keep on the great work, mates. An award is another great way to recognize the efforts of the volunteer force. This year we’ve had a couple of nominations for the Outstanding GOLD group award. Congratulations to the Winnipeg Section GOLD group for winning the award.

California was then a Mexican province, and from its governor he gained title to land in order to start a settlement named New Switzerland at the meeting point of the Sacramento and American rivers. He took possession of 50,000 acres (20,235 hectares), and ten years later he was a prosperous rancher. When the Mexican War of 1846-48 brought California to the United States, Sutter's future seemed assured. Then, suddenly, events turned against him. On the morning of Jan. 24, 1848, one of his employees, James Wilson Marshall , discovered gold at the site of a sawmill construction project. Marshall and Sutter agreed to become partners in mining the gold, but soon the news leaked out. Sutter's property was besieged by thousands of trappers, farmers, sailors, lawyers, preachers, and people from nearly every other occupation all of whom wanted to strike it rich in the new gold find. This was the beginning of the first, and still most famous, gold rush of modern times. Within a year, the "
