Northwest Territories Two distinct geographics regions make up the Northwest Territories. First, there is the boreal forest. Boreal is a term relating to a forest in the northern North Temperate Zone that is mostly coniferous trees such as pine, spruce and fir. Referred to as taiga, it is the more southern "treed" portion of the area. The second area, known as the tundra is obvious from the stunted vegetation and rocks. The cold climate does not allow for a long growing season and although plants may be many years old, they are significantly smaller than their southern relatives.

Sboura Destinations
Canadian geography game
Lake Lousie is fed by the spectacular Glacier, popular with sightseers.
A) Elizabeth B) Isobella C) Albert D) Victoria This is a sample question from the game Sboura Destinations. This is a great game for the kids to play in the car on the way to a camping trip or in the tent on a rainy day. The destinations game is self-contained in its own box, which makes it convenient to play in a small area. The game is for players 8 years of age and up. "Sboura" is a Greek word that translates to "a spinning top" in English. The top has numbers on it and you spin in inside a dish in the game box. The number that comes up tells the player how many "destination" cards to pick up. The "destination" cards are trivia cards that have three questions on them. There are also "situation" cards mixed into the lot. Some of these situations require that you pay another player 50 Sboura points or that the pot pays you 60 points. There are several ways to play the game including short and extended versions.

Description
The 2003-2004 school year marks the tenth anniversary of The Great Canadian Geography Challenge The Great Canadian Geography Challenge is a national student competition organised by the Canadian Council for Geographic Education (CCGE). It is designed to help foster an interest in geography among young Canadians, and to raise the profile of geography with teachers and the public. The Great Canadian Geography Challenge is open to students from Grades 4 to 10 and operates on two levels of competition. Level 1 is for Grades 4 to 6 and is designed to be an introductory opportunity for teaching geography. Challenges are held as a classroom activity. Winners of Level 1 Challenges receive award certificates and are eligible for a national prize draw. The Level 2 Challenge is open to students under the age of 16 as of August 31, 2003. It begins with a school level Challenge where an overall winner is declared. School level winners then write a qualifying test for the right to advance to the provincial and territorial championships. Within each province or territory, students with the top 50 scores from the qualifying tests are invited to their respective provincial or territorial championships.

Social Studies, History and Geography Here's a great little Geography IQ test for Grade 4. The whole idea is to identify Canadian provinces as quickly as possible. You'll need to have Macromedia Flash installed on your computer for it to work. Given the name of a province, the student is challenged to identify the province by highlighting it and clicking. Students will also have the opportunity to enter their name into the High Scores list. Now, I figure I know Canadian provinces and territories as well as anyone but my best score pales in comparison to some of the ones online.
