While the United States, which adopted a federal constitution in 1787, is often regarded as the first modern federation, the history of federalism is much older.
The first documented federal system came into being among the ancient Isrealite tribes over 3200 years ago. Of similar antiquity were the confederations of the Bedoiun tribes and the Native confederacies in North America.

Canadian federal election, 1988
Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition The 1988 Canadian federal election was an election largely fought on a single issue: the Canada-United States Free Trade Agreement The Free Trade Agreement FTA ) was a trade agreement reached by Canada and the United States in October of 1987. It became extremely controversial in Canada, however. The agreement removed several trade restrictions in stages over a ten year period and resulted in a great increase in cross border trade. A few years later it was superseded by the North American Free Trade Agreement that included Mexico as well.

The Canadian Federal Government
Canada has a federal form of democratic government that brings together a number of different political communities under a common government for mutual purposes, and separate regional governments for the particular needs of each region. It takes into account Canada's geographical realities, the diversity of its cultural communities and its dual legal and linguistic heritage. Within the federal structure, elected officials-the Cabinet of ministers under the leadership of the Prime Minister-make up the chief decision-making body. Through consultation with other elected officials, provincial and municipal representatives as well as Canadians in general, the federal government leads the country's democratic system of governance.  The federal government's prime responsibility is to ensure and support the country's economic performance. Other responsibilities include national defence, interprovincial and international trade and commerce, immigration, the banking and monetary system, criminal law and fisheries. The federal government also oversees such industries as aeronautics, shipping, railways, telecommunications and atomic energy.
