About us
ABOUT WHMIS: The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) is Canada's hazard communication standard. The key elements of the system are cautionary labelling of containers of WHMIS "controlled products", the provision of material safety data sheets (MSDSs) and worker education programs. WHMIS is implemented through coordinated federal, provincial and territorial legislation. Supplier labelling and MSDS requirements are set out under the Hazardous Products Act and associated Controlled Products Regulations . The Hazardous Products Act and its regulations are administered by the Government of Canada Department of Health, commonly referred to as Health Canada. The Controlled Products Regulations establish a national standard for the classification of hazardous workplace materials. In addition to setting out criteria for biohazards, chemical and acute hazards, the regulations specify criteria for chronic health hazards including mutagenicity, carcinogenicity, embryo and reproductive toxicity, respiratory tract and skin sensitization. Each of the thirteen provincial, territorial and federal agencies responsible for occupational safety and health have established employer WHMIS requirements within their respective jurisdiction. These requirements place an onus on employers to ensure that controlled products used, stored, handled or disposed of in the workplace are properly labelled, MSDSs are made available to workers, and workers receive education and training to ensure the safe storage, handling and use of controlled products in the workplace.

Note: the currency of Canadian legislative websites can vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction; make sure you "note up" your Web research using official sources or versions from Quicklaw, Lexis or Westlaw e Carswell. For historical legislative research - to access an Ontario 1937 statute, for example - you often have no choice but to use print materials ( one exception to this is Alberta, where statutes have been digitized from 1906 to 1990

    Riding-by-Riding Information Exchange
Hello, friends. A federal election campaign has begun, and the timing couldn't be worse for me. I'm in the middle of trying to write a thesis and apply for jobs, and there really isn't time for me to be doing anything else. So while I'd love to run the Riding-by-Riding Information Exchange again, this time around I'm not going to be able to do it. However, political junkies need not despair!! Milton Chan, a student at the University of Waterloo, and one of the most active participants and observers of the 1997 website, has generously volunteered his time for the project. Please pay his site a visit:

You can also email Milton at m6chan@watarts.uwaterloo.ca You can take a post-election look at the Information Exchange's Guide To Election Night Viewing To take a look at the list of seats we missed, click here 28 of the 34 predictions we got wrong involved either the Tories or the NDP, and specifically 17 involved the Tories, 12 involved the NDP, and 1 (Sackville-Eastern Shore) involved both. The major reason for this, I think, is simply that a larger fraction seats where either the Conservatives or the NDP were in the running tended to be fairly close (or even 3-way races) and thus more difficult to call. A number of the NDP misses came due to a missed regional trendthe collapse of the Liberals in the Maritimes and in particular in Nova Scotia. We had information to the effect that the NDP was gaining strength quickly there and even one or two predictions of NDP upsets, but nothing we heard indicated the full extent of the deflation of the Liberals.
