      Cultural Profile
Canadians are very sensitive to being confused with the United States, the converse is not such a problem. Be very careful of this one, especially if coming from a country other that the US as the Canadian accent (if English) is not that easy to distinguish, although totally obvious to US residents and Canadians. Do not refer to the US as America, this is the name of the continent of which Canada is by far the largest country.
Canada for the British is noticeably more British than the USA. The English language differences are less, measurements are metric, and the Queen is on the money. Quebec is French speaking, out of the tourist spots and large cities you will encounter people who do not speak English. All of Canadian government information is bilingual.
      Some English language differences:
      Table (verb)
: To bring up for discussion, as in a session of Parliament, same meaning as in the UK but importantly opposite to that in the USA, where table means to put to one side.
      Washroom
: Bathroom or restroom. Always a useful one to know!

UNLEASHING CANADA

Presentation made by Mike Harris, Premier of Ontario (1995 - 2002), before the Montreal Economic Institute at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, in Montreal, on December 4, 2002.
FIGHTING POVERTY: HAVE SOCIAL EXPENDITURES HELPED THE POOR?
Poverty remains a pressing concern. This is particularly true since the various levels of government now enjoy huge budget surpluses with which they could fund new anti-poverty programs if they so desired. Column by Michel Kelly-Gagnon, MEI's Executive Director, published in the December 2000 edition of Montreal Business Magazine. WHY WE NEED FREE TRADE IN CANADA There seems to be a view among Canadian governments that the domestic market and interprovincial trade are not important. Canada as a country doesn't have enforceable trade rules. Provincial governments can and do use their legislative and regulatory powers to protect local interests and limit trade in their markets. We also don't have an effective mechanism to ensure that our domestic market is functioning the very best it can to support and sustain export growth in the future. Economic Note on interprovincial trade barriers (August 2001).

Economics is the science of how people produce goods and services, and how those goods and services are distributed and used. The Internet has quickly become an important research tool for business and economics information. Commercial, government, and educational web sites can provide a wealth of ideas and information about many topics in the field of Economics. Enjoy Life in Canada! The United Nations has rated Canada as the best country in the world to live in, for seven consecutive years. Immigration is the best way to enjoy your life in Canada. We hold over 1.7 trillion barrels of oil in Alberta. This is approximately 1/3rd of the world's recoverable oil reserves! The life expectancy of Canadians is 82 years, which ranks them among the top five countries of the world. So Immigration to Canada not only makes you a Canadian but also improves your life expectancy. Although Canada has far less than 1% of the world's population, we are blessed with 9% of the world's fresh water resources. British Columbia's total land and freshwater area are 95 million hectares, larger than France and Germany combined. Only 30 countries are larger! Canada's 37 national parks include Wood Buffalo National Park, which occupies more land than Taiwan or the Netherlands.

In May 2003 the Globe and Mail did a special e-Business Report (which they have done every once in a while over the past few years). This report referred to the CeBi - Canadian E-Business Initiative http://cebi.ca/ and a study done by the CeBi which was, in effect "Canada's On-line Report card". This section will look at what the Globe said + we will look at the CeBi site itself and material from the original report. WTGR Learning Objectives After studying this unit students will be able to:
    • understand the role that the federal government plays in trying to shape and develop business strategies in the private sector through the sponsorship of entities like the CeBi - Canadian E-Business Initiative http://cebi.ca/ identify and describe various strengths and weaknesses Canada has in the e-business world identify Canada's ranking globally on various e-business indicators as it relates to aprpeciating our national competitiveness recognize the process in which the government facilitates change and awareness in industry through partnerships in studies and projects

The advantage in discussing a topic through the use of a national newspaper article is that newspaper journalists approach a story in a way which makes it easy for students to learn. Journalists are trained to describe the most important points all in the first paragraph - which makes it easy for a student to quickly know what the subject is about.
