Diversity of art by canadian artists is the medium for the exploration of history and heritage, identity, culture, geography, and politics. English and French
http://www.nationhood.ca
Enter Flash Version Enter HTML Version Looking at artistic voices represented across Canada, it becomes clear that our identity - who and what we are as individuals, communities, regions, and a country - can never be told in just one story. The cultures, histories, and relationships among Canadian communities have always been changing. The art that has come out of this ever-changing reality are all pieces of a broader dialogue, offering glimpses of the possibilities for many different identities. In Telling Stories: Narratives of Nationhood, a diversity of art by Canadian artists is the medium for the exploration of Canadian history and heritage, identity, culture, geography, and politics.

E. Pauline Johnson: Native Identity
The Mohawk name Pauline Johnson used, "Tekahionwake" , means "double wampum" or "double life" in the Mohawk language. It is a fitting name because in a way, Pauline led a double life. Although Pauline was an Indian according to the Canadian government because her father was a Mohawk, the environment of Chiefswood where she grew up was largely non-Native. At the same time, Pauline thought of herself as purely Native. She even called white people "palefaces". Pauline could and did fit into the white world, but found that she had to assert her Native identity when she was in white society.

and sold in Pauline Johnson's time.
Because of the "double" life she lived, Pauline had to deal with non-Native people who did not understand her Native heritage. Some non-Native people even thought that Natives were wild savages. These people were sometimes puzzled by her "civilized" manner. On a trip home from England, she met a woman from New York City who complained about English customs:
"Why, when I asked for ice water," she said, "they looked at me as if I were a North American Indian savage!" "Do you know, that's just the way they looked at me, " observed Miss Johnson, quietly. The Yankee [a slang word for American] stared at her. "Say, Miss Johnson, was your father a real wild Red Indian?" she asked. "Yes, a full-blooded Indian," was the smiling answer. "Excuse me, but you don't look a bit like it!" observed the other lady, and her tone made Miss Johnson ask quickly, "And was your father a real white man?" "Why, yes!" exclaimed the Yankee. "Excuse me, but I'm equally surprised!" said Pauline.
