Canadian church leaders warn government over missile defence plan
Vancouver, Canada
by Ferdy Baglo
ENI-04-0173
Monday, March 22, 2004 [Ecumenical News International] Twenty Canadian church leaders from the country's major denominations have written to Prime Minister Paul Martin urging that Canada abandon any plans to join with the United States in its Ballistic Missile Defence strategy.
"The extraordinary squandering of resources in the vain pursuit of technological immunity from nuclear weapons is itself an offence against the will of the Creator," said the church leaders in a four-page letter dated 15 March.
The letter, signed by the national leaders of the 20 churches linked to the Canadian Council of Churches, was prompted by negotiations that are underway which would see Canada lending support to the US initiative to build a ground-based missile defence system.
"We cannot afford to waste time and resources on an unworkable strategic missile defence scheme. The world cannot afford it," said Karen Hamilton, the church council's general secretary, in a statement on 16 March.
The missile defence system being developed by the US is intended to counter a perceived threat posed by the proliferation of ballistic missiles among countries deemed to be rogue states. The administration of President George W. Bush plans to deploy the first phase of the system by 2004-05.

Demonstrations will be held today in at least five major cities Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec City to protest the police raid on the United Church and pressure federal Public Safety Minister Anne McLellan to have Mr. Cherfi, 35, returned to Canada. Mr. Cherfi, who arrived from Algeria in 1998 and entered Canada from the United States, had claimed refugee status. Last January his request to remain in Canada was rejected after a long legal battle with Canadian and Quebec immigration officials. According to his supporters, Mr. Cherfi's arrest was politically motivated and was part of a well-orchestrated plan on the part of Quebec and federal governments, determined to deport him, regardless of the church's resolve to protect him. At least seven officers chased a panicked Mr. Cherfi from the living room before he was jumped, handcuffed and dragged outside into a police car.

History of Unity in Canada
Unity in Canada began in the late 1880's with Canadians subscribing to a publication called Modern Thought , first published in by a married couple: Charles Fillmore and Myrtle Fillmore. The magazine was later called Christian Science Thought and finally Unity The Fillmore's, the co-founders of Unity School of Christianity, were influenced by a number of religions and philosophies. Unity values the inspiration and progress made by all the great religions of the world especially Christianity from which they derive the bulk of their beliefs. At one time they called themselves Practical Christianity as they wanted to recapture the energy and essence of the first century BCE spiritual communities that followed Jesus' teachings. This commitment to personal spiritual growth has grown into a gentle and practical set of beliefs and organizations (see Beliefs and Unity Organizations below). Unity in Canada grew during the religious revival that flourished in North America at the beginning of the Twentieth Century. In the early years Unity in Canada was loosely organized. Individuals corresponded directly with the American headquarters, Unity Village in Missouri. Informal study groups often grew into churches or centres drawing much of their leadership from within the group.

[courtesy of jcrelations.net We, the leaders of nine Christian churches in Canada, speak to you together through the facilitation of the Canadian Council of Churches, of which we all are members. In this letter, we are addressing one situation only, which is a Canadian one. While we recognize that there are other serious situations here in Canada and throughout the world, which demand the faithful attention of all people of good will, we have become profoundly concerned and deeply dismayed by the alarming increase of anti-Semitism in Canada. This anti-Semitism has taken many forms, including violence against Jewish persons - simply because of their ethnic or religious background, and the desecration of Holy places and cemeteries. We have become alerted to this resurgent evil through our own witness, through the media, and through the concern of others, including members of the Court of Appeal for Ontario and the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. We, the undersigned, representing many of the Christian churches in Canada, are fully aware of and deeply grateful for the Jewish roots of our faith traditions. In the Epistle to the Romans, Chapter 11, verses 17 and 18, St. Paul wrote

Our confessions and practises are based on the foundation of God's Word and the belief that God's gift of salvation is found only through faith in Jesus Christ, God's only Son. In more than 325 congregations, from British Columbia to New Brunswick, this message is proclaimed in word and deed. History
The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod
formed an autonomous Canadian church with three districts. The Alberta-British Columbia District offices are in Edmonton, Alberta, the Central District in Regina, Saskatchewan and the East District in Kitchener, Ontario. The denomination retains close ties with the LCMS and other Lutheran church bodies around the world which follow the Biblically-based Lutheran Confessions. Worship
Our worship services draw upon the rich traditions of the early church, which provide a framework within which our members can receive God's blessings as His Word is preached and the Lord's Supper celebrated. While many of our congregations share the heritage of music passed down through the centuries, others have chosen to include newer expressions of the timeless truths of God's love. Missions

Canadian Church leaders decry Israeli occupation
By ART BABYCH
Canadian Catholic News
Ottawa
The Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories in defiance of United Nations resolutions is at the heart of the current violence in the Middle East, say the leaders of the Anglican and United churches in Canada. Archbishop Michael Peers, the Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, and Right Rev. Marion Pardy, Moderator of the United Church of Canada, said in separate letters published in the National Post April 5 there can be no peace until Israel withdraws its forces from occupied territory. Their sentiments echo those of the Vatican which days earlier criticized the "injustice and humiliation imposed on the Palestinian people," and called for a halt to military reprisals by Israel that followed a wave of suicide bombings that has killed dozens of Israeli citizens. Peers, who visited Palestinian areas last spring with a group of Canadian church leaders, said the group was "horrified by the state of constant fear imposed on the Palestinian people by the armed forces of Israel."
