.news stand Church Growth in Quebec Imagine a typical Quebec Protestant. Are you thinking of someone who prays in French or any of a score of other languages? Someone who worships in a small storefront church, converted movie theatre or airy new building in an industrial park? Someone who's ready to experiment with catchy music or child care, but not with traditional doctrine? Recent statistical analysis suggests that you might be on the right track. For years now, evangelical Protestant leaders in Quebec have argued that a substantial majority of Quebec Protestants actually in church on Sunday are conservative "evangelicals." Now, an analysis of 2001 census data by the inter-church outreach organization Christian Direction points up that Quebec evangelicals now outnumber liberal Protestants. Growth in Quebec Protestant churches has been particularly dynamic among immigrants and among non-practising francophone Catholics deciding to return to church life, Glenn Smith, executive director of Christian Direction, said.

Canadian Church History
Canadian Church history remains an important focus of Canadian history as taught at The University of Western Ontario. Church history holdings in Benson Special Collections are extensive, particularly as relating to the southwestern Ontario region. The collection comprises:
  • histories of various Canadian religious denominations and churches doctrinal and theological tracts, sermons, and addresses gospel works in Canadian native languages biographies and memoirs of Canadian divines religious diatribes and bigoted rants missionary reports religious periodicals reports on temperance activities, moral and family issues, and other social reform matters
There remain many gaps in the collection, however, particularly in published secondary source materials and in published primary materials. The collection documents the central focus that religion had in 19th-century Canadian life, particularly the religious controversies and movements of the day, the efforts to bring the gospel to the pioneer settlements and to Canada's native peoples, and the beginnings of the Canadian social gospel. Ecumenical Relations With Reformed Churches
A historical study focussing especially on the Canadian Reformed Churches
by R.E. Pot
"It is concerning precisely this federation, the OPC, that an explosion of articles and letters has appeared in church magazines of the Canadian Reformed Churches in the last two decades. Synods inevitably find themselves confronted with appeals and letters concerning the OPC, and more and more pages in the Acts of Synods attest to a scrutinizing spotlight on the OPC … To one who has only recently placed his roots in the Canadian Reformed Churches, and hence somewhat ignorant about developments in the North American ecclesiastical scene, the amount of discussion concerning the OPC was a little perplexing. Why all the attention?" - excerpt from the Introduction This paper was initially prepared as a paper in April 1995 for a church history course at the Theological College of the Canadian Reformed Churches. Minor revisions were made in March 1998 to incorporate developments prior to the convening of General Synod Fergus in May 1998. It aims to help come to a greater understanding of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church by examining its roots and history. It gives special attention to its ecumenical contacts with other Reformed Churches, especially the development in its relationship with the Canadian Reformed Churches. May it serve in giving us a greater understanding of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church, and an eye for the Lord’s work in her history.
