  • A History of Colonial and International Relations in Louisiana, 1762-1801
Louisisana has been a focal point for many significant colonial and international relations, and not merely because of its size (Louisiana, but not the area known as a state today, comprised 'about a million square miles, or one third of the continental United States'). Louisiana was important because of its central location in the continent and its proximity, via the Mississippi, to the colonies of imperial powers and, as such, it was a vital location for trade. Being such an important site, it is no wonder that many imperial powers vied for access to, influence in and ownership of the Louisiana territory. This history of Louisiana as a site for colonial and international relations begins in 1762, when France ceded Louisiana to Spain as part of the secret Treaty of Tontainebleau. David J. Weber suggests that 'France was eager to get rid of Louisiana' as a result of the numerous losses she had incurred during the Seven Years' War and as a way of fulfilling her promise to Spain from before the war.

The foundation's urban assistance activity is part of its Urban Poverty Programme, which is mostly aimed at the alleviation of poverty in the US. The Ford Foundation has developed a new strategy for more active support for urban research throughout the developing world. Presently about half the Foundation's international urban assistance is in the shelter sector. The other half is for community development, employment, mico-enterprise development, and social services. Within the framework of its urban research programme for eastern and southern Africa it collaborates with UNCHS (among others) especially in such areas as poverty alleviation. The foundation was a major financial contributor to the preparatory process for the Habitat II Conference. In South Africa
In 1997, specific grants were given to strengthen and assist governmental structures and functions, civic participation, public service, and public policy analysis.

Has the detection of high pathogenic avian influenza disrupted trade? A number of trading partners including Japan and South Africa have temporarily suspended the import of various poultry commodities from all of Canada, including live birds and poultry products, while other countries, such as the United States, have limited their restrictions to products from the Province of British Columbia. In addition, the European Union has confirmed that it will regionalise its measures, thereby limiting import restrictions to the Control Area in B.C.

    SAP Canada

International Relations Through Other Means Document(s) 5 of 8 Maureen O'Neil, President of IDRC
Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. Let me begin by saying how pleased I am to join you at your conference here today. Our theme for this session — “International Relations Through Other Means” — is central to a primary concern within my own institution. That concern, which now infuses all our programs, is the strengthening of democratic governance. It is clear to me, as it is to you, that parliamentarians have a unique and crucial role in promoting and improving good governance. So I will quickly describe how IDRC has approached these complicated governance questions. Then I will turn to the special role of parliamentarians in developing and conducting what might be called a democratic foreign policy. As some of you may know, the International Development Research Centre was created in 1970 by an Act of the Canadian Parliament. But, from the beginning, its mission and character have been profoundly international. By law (and almost alone among Canadian Crown agencies) only slightly more than half of the members of the Centre’s Board of Governors are Canadian; in fact, almost half of all our Governors have been drawn from outside Canada. By law as well, IDRC’s purpose is to promote the indigenous capacity of developing countries to discover and apply the knowledge necessary for their own development — by setting their own research agendas.

Site has an extensive set of general links provided by the Department of Political Science at Louisiana State University and is maintained by Professor James Bolner, Sr. Site's major categories of links include general resources, international organizations, Canadian materials, Latin America, European materials, French and Francophone materials, Spain, Russia and the former Soviet Union and its satellites, the Bosnian conflict, the Middle East, Asia, and Africa. Annotation to some of the links would improve the site enormously, though it is comprehensive overall and a good jumping-off point for general IR resources.

Site includes links to diplomacy, disarmament and nonproliferation, environment and development, human rights, institutional members, international documents review, international law, international relations and international organizations, peace and security, ISA, international trade, libraries, news and radio, NGOs, publishers, UN and related links.
