LAKE HARTWELL One of the largest man made lakes in the south, Lake Hartwell offers fishing, camping, sailing and other recreational activities. The U.S. Corps of Engineers maintains numerous parks and camping locations along the lakes 962 miles of shoreline. With only a 25 foot setback from the lake, homes can be built on the lake with tremendous vistas and easy access, often with boat docks. Hartwell Dam is located on the Savannah River, approximately 8 miles east of the city of Hartwell on U.S. Hwy.29. The lake was designed and built for flood control and to provide a constant supply of water for all those downstream on the Savanah River. The dam is also used as a hydroelectric facility to generate power during peak demand times, thus helping to give local residents low cost electricity. Public tours are available of the dam and powerhouse. Just call the local Corps of Engineers office at (706)-376-4788 for dates and times. Special tours may be arranged for groups or tours. Fishing - A majority of Refuge visitors come to experience the excellent fishing opportunities. Both shoreline and boat fishing are available. Hunting - Public hunting areas can be found throughout the District. State hunting rules and regulations are followed, in addition to Refuge regulations. The District is located within a premiere waterfowl hunting area. Trapping - Public trapping areas can be found throughout the District. Both Refuge and state regulations apply. Trappers must apply for a Refuge trapping permit and tags. Wildlife Observation/Photography - Many areas within the District offer excellent opportunities for wildlife observation and/or photography. Contact the District Office for additional information.
Boating - The District is located within a 90 mile stretch of the Mississippi River and is open to boating. Numerous boat launches can be found throughout the Refuge. Camping - Primitive camping is permitted, except for within Refuge access or parking areas. If tables, fireplaces, or other facilities are erected, all traces must be removed before departure.

Patapsco Valley State Park Area map/camp loop map General camping information 2004 Camping Season Make a reservation Patapsco Valley State Park extends along 32 miles of the Patapsco River, encompassing 14,000 acres and five developed recreational areas. Recreational opportunities include hiking, fishing, camping, canoeing, horseback and mountain bike trails, as well as picnicking for individuals or large groups in the park's many popular pavilions. With Patapsco's Trail Management Plan in hand, funding has begun to renovate the trail system and upgrade signage and information systems. The park is nationally known for its trail opportunities and scenery. Check out the Trail Management Plan for the Avalon and McKeldin Sections In one of Maryland's first state parks (1907), the valley and its natural resources have been enjoyed by the Native Americans, explorers, settlers and present-day citizens. With its source in Frederick and Carroll counties, the Patapsco serves the Port of Baltimore, and empties into the Chesapeake Bay. The Avalon Visitor Center houses exhibits spanning over 300 years of history along the Patapsco River. ... r = not permitted at Great Falls Park Visitor Center What hours is the Visitor Center open? The Visitor Center is open every day except for December 25th, when the park is closed. Hours vary seasonally, but it will be open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. daily, with extended hours during the spring/summer weekends. Contact the park at 703-285-2965 for additional information. Bicycling Where can I ride my bike in the park? All visitors entering the park are asked to stop at the entrance station in order to comply with Great Falls Park's fee program. Entrance fees for individuals are $3.00 per person if coming into the park on a bicycle or $5.00 if coming by vehicle. An annual pass may be purchased for $20.

Activities at Lake Meredith With its inviting blue waters and surrounding environs, Lake Meredith is a popular recreation destination. Boating- five boat launch ramps, water level dependant, and a marina provide access for boaters. Boating fees are charged. Fishing Anglers try for largemouth, smallmouth, and white bass, catfish, white crappie, sunfish, carp, and walleye from the lakeshore and boats. Lake water levels determine access in many areas. Texas Parks and Wildlife fishing license is required. Waterskiing, Sailing, Sail-boarding, Scuba Diving, and Swimming are all popular recreational activities. Camping: Lake Meredith offers three general types of campgrounds and one day use area. The caprock campgrounds are situated on bluffs above the lake. The canyon campgrounds are located in canyons away from the lake, and the shoreline campgrounds are found along the lake shoreline. Camping at the lake is first come, first served and is limited to 14-days annually per visitor. Trailer hookups and showers are not available. There are no entrance or camping fees; however, there are boating fees. Boating permits can be purchased at area bait shops or Park Headquarters office at 419 E. Broadway, Fritch, Texas, 79036. Fishing and Hunting: Visitors can fish and hunt at Lake Meredith under Federal and State of Texas Game and Fish regulations; contact the park for a hunting map and hunting/fishing seasons/bag limits.
