Camping Food
A Whole Bunch of Suggestions to Help You Eat Better in the Great Outdoors
Here are bunch of camp food suggestions from some of the good folks on the Scouts-L Youth Groups Discussion List.
Minute Rice and Other Good Things
To add to Ronalds suggestions; Minute Rice now has a long grain and wild rice mix that was a hit on our last outing. I am a big fan of Ziplock Freezer bags, put the mix in the Ziplock bag and add boiling water. The bags are strong enough to not melt or break. I usually use two, just in case but have never had one fail. On the subject of bag cooking, check out your local health food store for dehydrated refried beans. Rehydrate in the bag, squeeze onto a tortilla, add cheese and salsa and you have a crowd pleasing fast lunch entree. Tomato powder has many uses, you can get tomato bouillon in the Mexican food section of Wal-Mart Supercenters. Thanks to Greg Gough, SM Troop 201, Ozark, MO

Outdoor Cooking with Food Storage
If you're planning a weekend get-away or a large family reunion, how about pulling out some of your food storage and giving your camp meals a delicious new twist? Food storage may not currently be on your list of things to bring to the great outdoors, but it should be a part of every camp cook's listif not for its convenience it may have two other reasons; learning to use your food storage and a good chance to rotate your food storage. Your camp cooking isn't the only thing benefiting from the use food storage. As indicated your food storage should be rotated on a regular basis to maintain freshness and to familiarize your family with the foods you store. It is often difficult to wait until an emergency or a time when your family must eat food storage, to introduce them to it. Some of the common hassles of camp cooking include lack of refrigeration, excessive weight (in packing the food), and the lack of a full functioning kitchen for cooking multiple foods at a time and having measuring equipment handy. Most of these inconveniences can be lessened or solved all together by using some of the dehydrated foods frequently found in food storage. 4 Ways Food Storage Foods Make Camp Cooking more Convenient No refrigeration required : if you're tired of constantly worrying about coolers having enough ice in them and keeping your food at safe temperatures, you'll love using dehydrated foods. Dehydrated butter, shortening, vegetables, fruits and even Textured Vegetable Protein do not require refrigeration before use. Camp meals can be great and you can leave your cooler at home.
