Camp Pears Steamed Seafood and Veggies Campfire Roots
Also see Other Trail Dining Resources Camp Pears Although traditionally this calls for a dry red wine, you can use apple juice, cider(hard) or even water if thats all you have. It is best to use pears which are very firm. Peel and core pears leaving the stem intact. In a pan (Cousance is best because of the porcelain lining) put your chosen liquid and add some sugar, cloves, grated nutmeg and cinnamon. Bring to a boil. Stir and lower heat. Insert pears and simmer for thirty minutes. Enjoy! Additional treat: add some soft cheese (Stilton, Gorgonzola, Brie or Saga) inside the cooked pears. Also, crushed mixed nuts will make it divine!!! Steamed Seafood and Veggies You'll need:
  • A white fish from the ocean sole(fragile), monk(firm), cod(fragile), haddock, orange roughy or halibut. You can also use shrimps or lobster or a combination of several; just adjust cooking time to thickness.
  • Tomatoes (cubed)
  • Green Peppers (sliced)
  • Onions (chopped)
  • Garlic (crunched)
  • Olive oil
  • Pepper/salt
In a skillet place some olive oil and crushed garlic. Heat (do not burn garlic). When the oil is well scented add the green peppers. Let cook a few minutes then add onions.

  • Measure ingredients for each meal ahead of time and pack in ziplock bags. Label each bag accordingly. Reuse bags if possible. Prepare soups, stews or chili etc ahead of time. Freeze and keep in cooler. Reheat for a quick meal. Don't forget the heavy duty aluminum foil. There are many uses for it at camp. Be very careful with gas canisters. Keep upright at all times. Keep outside in well ventilated area. Check for leakage by putting soap liquid on all connections. Turn off when not in use. Freeze meat before putting in cooler. Keeps other foods cold and will keep longer. Cover pots whenever cooking outdoor. Food will get done quicker and you will save on fuel. Also helps keep dirt and insects out of your food. For ease of clean up and to protect from smoke and fire damage, put liquid soap on outside of your pots and pans before putting over the fire.
