A.) Establishment and Expansion of the Colony
German explorer GUSTAV NACHTIGAL in 1884 obtained a treaty of chiefs from the coastal region asking for German protection, and a German protectorate was proclaimed the same year, which gained international recognition at the BERLIN CONFERENCE of 1884/1885. Agreements fixing Cameroon's borders were signed with France in 1894, with Britain in 1906. Until 1891 the colony officially was referred to as DEUTSCH-WESTAFRIKA and consisted of two parts, Kamerun and TOGOLAND ; the Governor resided in Buea (Kamerun); in 1891, Togoland was made a separate colony. From 1896 to 1901 the colony was referred to as DEUTSCH-NORDWESTAFRIKA (German Northwest Africa).
In the early years the colony lacked funding and consequently developed slowly. The geography was a major obstacle - few, short stretches of navigable rivers; mountain ranges with deep valleys - the terrain made railway construction extremely difficult and thus made the development of many hinterland resources unprofitable. In addition, the native coastal population resisted attempts by the whites to penetrate into the interior, as they regarded the trade with the interior their monopoly.

Reunification discourse has generated controversy in Cameroon since the 1990s and hinges on the issue of the degree of commitment of Anglophone and Francophone Cameroonians to its realization. This essay provides a chronological, comprehensive, and critical survey of the reunification question. Often only part of the history is presented, either inadvertently or deliberately. It is argued in this essay that reunification was a minority ideology conned largely to the Cameroon people of the Southwestern quadrant. That notwithstanding, its chief proponents were Francophones who conceived it, propagated it, and sustained it until the United Nations recognized it in the 1960s. The 1961 reunification of the British Southern Cameroons and the former French Cameroons was an extraordinary event, as peoples of different colonial backgrounds decided to form a single state. It presented a countercurrent in postcolonial Africa to the prevailing trend of the balkanization of old political unions or blocs.

History
Archaeological remains indicate that a civilisation existed in the region of modern day CAR before the rise of Egypt. Little is known of that, however, and of the CAR's present inhabitants, pygmies were the first to arrive. More than 1000 years ago people began migrating from Sudan in the east and Cameroon in the west. By 1600, the region was probably part of the Gaoga empire; slavery was the rage and villages were continually raided by Arab conquerors from Chad and Sudan, and via the coast by European slavers. Whole villages in the north were depopulated, and people were still being sold in Cairo slave markets until the late 19th century. The CAR today is one of the most lightly populated countries in Africa. When the European powers carved up Africa, France was awarded most of the central area. In 1889, a French post was set up in Bangui, although complete control wasn't secured for another 12 years. The French government soon realised it did not have the savoir-faire to exploit the region to the full, so the government broke it down into 17 concessions and dished them out to European companies in exchange for around 15% of profits and a fixed annual payment. The companies weren't particularly enlightened employers; they conscripted the local population into slave-like servitude. Those who refused or deserted were killed or tortured, and thousands died.

History
Little is known about Cameroon before 1472 when the Portuguese arrived shouting 'Camarµes, camarµes!' in amazement at the many giant shrimp - hence the country's name. For the next 400 years, southern Cameroon's history, like that of the rest of West Africa's Atlantic seaboard, revolved around the slave trade. Northern Cameroon, by contrast, was a battleground for various empires, notably the Kanem-Bornu in Chad. When the Germans arrived in the late 19th century, 'feudal' northern Cameroon was under the control of the Fulani empire in Sokoto (Nigeria). Despite an invitation from a Douala chief to set up a protectorate over the area in the 1850s, Great Britain dillied and dallied for decades and finally lost to the Germans in 1884, intent on forging their own African empire, who beat them to an agreement by five days. The Germans were active colonisers, building schools, railways and plantations. But German rule was harsh: at one plantation a fifth of the labourers died in a single year from overwork. After WWI Cameroon received new overlords courtesy of the League of Nations, which gave the French a mandate over 80% of the territory, and the British control of two separate areas, one in the south-western highlands (Southern Cameroons) and the other in the north (Northern Cameroons, now part of Nigeria). As a result, a single nation was divided into three parts governed by two colonial powers - hardly a situation conducive to later unification. What was worse, the British neglected their territories and instead lavished attention on their administrative capital in Nigeria. Within a few years the Brits sold their Cameroons holdings back to the Germans, who didn't last much longer - the outbreak of WWII saw them repatriated and stripped of their land by the Allies.

Major revolutions took place in Africa during this period: the Mfecane in southern Africa and the Islamic revolutions in West Africa resulted in the emergence of new States. • Introduction
To put African music in an historical and social context, I compiled the following notes on African history , on the social context of African music, on the instruments and styles of African music, and on the popularisation of African music. The text below has been put together with reference to a number of sources and a bibliography is supplied at the end of the section.
Recommended books are marked with an '*'.
  • African Music in Social Context
Authentic African music - the traditional music of the black peoples of Africa - is little known abroad. The non-African listener can find the music strange, difficult, and unattractive; and therefore often concludes that it is not of interest. Both African and non-African music are human inventions and individual notes contain the same elements such as pitch, duration, tone colour and intensity. Music plays a similar role in most societies, as work songs, lullabies, battle songs, religious music, and so on. Generally speaking the same categories of instruments are found in Africa as in Europe, namely stringed instruments, wind instruments, and percussion. The African concept of music is totally different to the Western one though. Traditional African musicians do not seek to combine sounds in a manner pleasing to the ear. Their aim is simply to express life in all of its aspects through the medium of sound. The African musician does not merely attempt to imitate nature by music, but reverses the procedure by taking natural sounds, including spoken language, and incorporate them into the music. To the uninitiated this may result in cacophony, but in fact each sound has a particular meaning. To be meaningful, African music must be studied within the context of African life.

Pages from World Bank History: Cameroon A brief look at 38 years of partnership between Cameroon and the Bank A brief look at 38 years of partnership between Cameroon and the Bank January 10, 2003 Cameroon is a Central African nation on the Gulf of Guinea, bordered by Nigeria, Chad, the Central African Republic, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon. Bantu speakers were among the first groups to settle Cameroon, followed by the Muslim Fulani in the 18th and 19th centuries. The land escaped colonial rule until 1884, when treaties with tribal chiefs brought the area under German domination. After World War I, the League of Nations gave the French a mandate over 80% of the area, and the British 20% adjacent to Nigeria. After World War II, when the country came under a UN trusteeship in 1946, self-government was granted. At this time, the Cameroon People's Union emerged as the dominant party by campaigning for reunification and independence. In British Cameroon, unification was also promoted by the leading party, the Kamerun National Democratic Party. France set up Cameroon as an autonomous state in 1957, and the next year its legislative assembly voted for independence by 1960.
