Geography of Cameroon One of the major geographical features of Cameroon is Mount Cameroon, upon which CHAMEG is located. This mountain is the highest point in Cameroon and is actually a still active volcano. Another of the major geological features are the huge rivers that wind through much of Cameroon: the Logone, the Sanaga, the Nyong, and the Benoue. The peoples of Cameroon rely heavily upon these rivers for their livelihood. The capital of Cameroon is Yaounde, which began as a German trading station. Another important city is Douala, which actually existed before colonialism as a small native settlement. Both of these cities' creations and/or developments can be traced to the colonialism that forged the country's history, as is the case with all the cities in Cameroon. View of the city of Yaounde History of Cameroon Pre-Colonial Era In the 17th century, cassava (a tuber/root) was introduced into the area, seriously altering women's lives ever since. Since it was considered a woman's role to grow and process the cassava, this lead to a shift in labor that seriously disadvantaged women. In the 19th century, Fulani Muslims from the north invaded what would be Cameroon. There were two consequences of this invasion for women: on one hand, women indigenous to the invaded regions resisted this invasion mainly because the Fulani's cattle were damaging their crops. Secondly, since this resistance was not successful, and because the Fulani were Muslim, a religion known for its seclusion of women and their subordination to their husbands, those women in the northern region of the country who were converted to the religion saw their circumstances change drastically.

Cameroon Embassy in the Netherlands Geography Cameroon is the cross-roads of Black Africa. It lies at the heart of the Gulf of Guinea and is virtually an inevitable passage between West and Central Africa. Cameroon has a surface area of 475.000 square kilometres with a population of 15 millions inhabitants. It opens on to the Atlantic Ocean through a 402-kms coastline. It is bounded: -to the West by Nigeria; -to the North and East by Chad and the Central African Republic respectively; -and to the South by Congo, Gabon an Equatorial Guinea. The longest distances are 725 kms from East to West in the Southern part of the country and 1,620 kms from the banks of Lake Chad to the North of the Atlantic coast in the South. The highest point in the country is Mount Cameroon, a volcano 4,070 meters in height. The South (a third of the country) has an equatorial climate, with dense forests, and plantation of rubber trees, oil palms and tea at the foot of Mount Cameroon. The West has a temperate climate, with rounded mountains, former volcanoes, and fertile lands which are the store cupboards of Central Africa: Coffee, cocoa, bananas and food crops. In the Centre, the huge plateau of Adamaoua, which varies in altitude from 1,000 to 1,500 meters, slopes gently down to the Sanaga valley in which the country’s main river flows. In the North, a deep and abrupt fault leads to the Benoue basin. The North of the country has a dry, hot climate and is covered in savannah and astonishing mountains, the Mandara mountains, which give a lunar aspect to the landscape. From the dense forests in the South to the savannah, lives a wide variety of protected wildlife in a number of national parks, the most important of which is Waza.
