Myth has it that Cameroon supporters are colourful, drum-beating people, dancing to the rhythms of the western African republic. When one thinks of Africa, one is automatically transported to black-magic wielding dancers and masters of “juju”.
And it is true. Cameroon is no exception – indeed, before the opening match against Ireland in Niigata on Japan’s western coast, I was confronted by one so-called witch-doctor, running up and down the aisle, vicious fangs in his mouth, the green, red and yellow of our national flag trailing him.
Drums beat throughout the game, where the Europeans and South Americans sing. Africa is not a singing continent, at least not when it comes to football. Drums, and beautiful Cameroonian ladies in traditional colours, dancing to the entrancing rhythms – this is what football in Cameroon is all about. It is a different style completely to all-European games.
Ever since Roger Milla scored his two goals against Colombia in Italia 1990 to put the Indomitable Lions into a quarter-final clash with England, Cameroon has been expected to perform, yet has always underachieved.

Tell us about the country you are from?

The people of Cameroon are wonderful and receptive - especially when they see someone such as myself as passionate about the Indomitable Lions as they are. There is a sense of national pride that is given to them by the national team, and when the Lions win, the whole country erupts into celebration. Music blares out from the shanty huts that house so many of the population, and there are smiles on the faces of people who walk down the street. These are things that are not found in the west.
What 3 things do you value most?
My cat, Kahukura (a silver tabby who came with me to the USA from Taiwan, and then returned to Taiwan with me, collecting more frequent flyer miles than me), my passion for football and my passion for Africa
How will you follow the world cup? I will be at the World Cup in Japan at all Cameroon games, and will be noticeable as the white guy in the Cameroon shirt, with green, red and yellow hair, draped in the Cameroon flag. Things that I feel will be impossible to overlook.

Management and Change in Cameroon
Introduction
Historical legacy and complexity
Ethnic complexity and demographics
This complexity of the origin of the Republic of Cameroon also overlays its ethnic complexity. Although there are some 130 ethnic groups (and around 250 languages and dialects) there are five major ones: Bamiléké and Bamoun in the west; Fulani and Kirdi in the north; and Ewondo around Yaoundé. The Bamiléké form one of the largest communities in Douala (the foremost industrial centre and port), and within the western highlands. They tend to dominate within much of the economy of Cameroon. In the rural areas there are around 80 political units ruled by independent chefferies or chiefs. Each such unit contains secret societies that are responsible for preserving traditions and rituals. The Bamoun are an exception to this, as they have a single leader or sultan (Lonely Planet, 2002). The south of the country has been in contact with Europe for more than 500 years, and Christianity is common alongside traditional beliefs. The north was part of the Muslim Fulani kingdoms until the 20

The population of Cameroon is 14 million and there are over 130 recognized ethnic groups and languages. Only 5 of these are considered important - Bamileke and Bamoun in the west, Fulani and Kirdi in the north and the Ewondo who live around the city of Yaounde. Bantu-speaking people, such as the Douala, predominate along the southern coast and in the forested areas. Religion Half of the people of Cameroon follow traditional animist beliefs, while one-third are Christian and the rest Muslim. Islam is the dominant religion of the northern area. Language The two official languages in Cameroon are English and French, though in Yaounde and Douala they prefer to speak in French. In the western area of the Bamileke and Bamoun, people speak Pidgin English because of the influence of neighbouring Nigeria. 24 African languages are recognised and the most popularly spoken are Bamileke, Ewondo, Fulfulde and Arabic. Food The country grows a lot of fruits such as avocado pears, citrus fruits, pineapples and mangoes. Prawns are available in plenty in southern coastal areas.
