The Fulani came from the Niger basin in two waves, in the 11th and 19th centuries; they were Muslims who converted and subjugated the peoples of the Logone valley and the Kébi and Faro river valleys. The third ethnic group consists mainly of small tribes, except for the Bantu-related Bamileke, who live between the lower slopes of the Adamawa Plateau and Mount Cameroon. Other western Semi-Bantu-speaking tribes include the Tikar, who live in the Bamenda region and in the western high plateau.

Cameroon ( Cameroun ) Country Code: cm
    Flag of Cameroon Background:
The name Cameroon is derived from the Portuguese word, Camaroes, meaning shrimps. A Portuguese sailor Ferdanando Poo in 1472 arrived at the River Wouri in Douala and discovered so many shrimps in the river that he decided to call it Rio Dos Camaroes (River of shrimps, in Portuguese)... It was from this word that the territory derived is name which is now spelt in various forms: Spanish spelt it Cameroes; Germans, Kamerun; English, Cameroon; and French, Cameroun.
The territory was colonized by the Germans in1884 and after the end of the 1914-1918 war, Cameroon was mandated by the Ligue of Nations to the French and British governments. France took the greater sector, formally known as East Cameroon, while Britain took responsibility over former West Cameroon known then as "Cameroon under British Administration".
On january 01st 1960 the French Sector became independent under the new name of Cameroon Republic. Following agitation for independence by the Southern Cameroons - before the name was changed to West Cameroon - a plebiscite was held in that sector of Cameroon on February 11th 1961 under the United Nations supervision. The result of the plebiscite which was overwhelming for reunification (233,571 against 97,741) gave Southern Cameroons automatic independence and unification, which was achieved on October 01st 1961. Thus after the reunification of both sectors, the Federal Republic of Cameroon was born.

Culture in the Neighbourhood Yaounde (Cameroon) - Strasbourg (France) A cultural visit over a 2-month period was organized for one of the leading artists of Yaounde, Pascal Kemfack, to Strasbourg, France in the first half of 1999. This visit has allowed the painter and sculptor to discover the work of his collegues in France and to share with them his experiences in Cameroon. A dance workshop in the Mvo-Ada neighbourhood has produced an educational show entitled "Ezezam" about drugs and violence among young people in the neighbourhoods of Yaoundé. This production will be performed later at the National Festival of the Arts and Culture, the Market of the African Performing Arts in Abidjan and the Meeting of the Heads of State of Central Africa in Yaoundé.

Culture in the Neighbourhood The varied impacts of globalization on cities have underscored the need for projects which address the dynamics of culturally diverse neighbourhoods in a modern urban environment. The Culture in the Neighbourhood project places emphasis on social integration and participation at the local level. It consists of cultural activities which the residents of a neighbourhood carry out through their own efforts. Additionally, it uses culture as a means of fostering dialogue and interaction between Africa and Europe. Conceptualized during the World Decade on Cultural Development (1988 - 1997), the

Match : Carsten Jancker goes up against midfielder Marc-Vivien Foe. dpa photo Germany beat Cameroon 2-0 on June 11 to advance to the World Cup round of 16. The game between the two leaders in Group E saw the continued rise to Cup stardom for Miroslav Klose, who scored his fifth goal of the tournament, another header, to seal the victory for Germany in the 79th minute. Klose was also key in the first goal in the 50th minute when he beat Cameroon defenders and found substitute Marco Bode who shot it past goalee Boukar Alioum. The game was perhaps most notable for its officiating, with the Spanish referee throwing a total of 16 yellow cards and ousting Germany's Carsten Ramelow in the 40th minute and Cameroon's Patrick Suffo in the 77th.
Foul : Referee Antonio Nieto Lopez red-cards Carsten Ramelow as teammate Michael Ballack looks on. dpa photo A tie was all Germany needed to secure the step into the round of 16. Both Cameroon and Germany led Group E with four points going into the game, but Germany had the goal-differential advantage. Cameroon tied against Ireland and beat Saudi Arabia 1-0. Germany also tied against Ireland, but beat Saudi Arabia 8-0. The game in Shizuoka, Japan, pitted coach Rudi Völler against his countryman Winfried "the Tiger" Schaefer who led Cameroon to become African Cup of Nations champions in 2000. But their loss against Germany means Cameroon exits the tournament. Ireland will advance after beating Saudi Arabia 3-0.
