Cameroon
Culture
Cameroon's split Anglo-French personality is further complicated by its bewildering array of African ethnic groups and languages. Of over 130 ethnic groups, however, there are 5 major ones: Bamil©k© and Bamoun in the west, Fulani and Kirdi in the north, and Ewondo around Yaound©. The Bamil©k© are the most populous group in the western highlands and one of the largest communities in Douala, where they have taken control of much of Cameroon's economy. In their rural homeland, there are some 80-odd political units ruled by strongly independent chefferies (chiefs). Within each unit there are numerous secret societies responsible for the preservation of rituals. By contrast, the Bamoun are governed by a single leader called the sultan Whereas the south has been in contact with Europe for over 500 years, until the 20th century the north was part of quasi-feudal Muslim Fulani kingdoms centered in Nigeria, and tradition and resistance to outside influence remain strong. This isolation has kept Western-style development to a minimum. Most northerners, however, are neither Fulani nor Muslim but Kirdi, the Fulani word for pagan. The Kirdi are comprised of tribes driven by the Fulani into the inhospitable and isolated rocky areas near the Nigerian border. Both French and English are official languages, though French is more widely spoken, especially in large, modern cities such as Yaound© and Douala. About 10% of the country relies primarily on a pidgin English, mainly in the western provinces near Nigeria. Among the many African languages spoken in Cameroon, the five major ones are Bamil©k©, Ewondo, Bamoun, Fulfulde and Arabic. Among the country's best-known writers are the novelists Kenjo Jumbam and Mongo Beti, both of whom have written about Cameroon's relationship with its European colonisers.

Why African Studies
Africa, recognized as the cradle of humanity, is one of the most culturally and environmentally diverse places on the planet; yet it remains largely unknown to people outside its borders. Contemporary Africa boasts rural societies steeped in ancient beliefs, alongside vibrant multicultural urban centers. Whether you are examining the arts, cultural studies, politics, economics, social change, development, or the natural environment, Africa is an ideal setting in which to broaden your intercultural understanding.

The vigorous rhythms played on the drums by the people of the southern forest region contrast with the flute music of northern Cameroonians. In the Adamawa area, the Muslim Fulani produce elaborately worked leather goods and ornate calabashes (gourds used as containers), and the Kirdi and the Matakam of the western mountains produce distinctive types of pottery. The powerful masks of the Bali, which represent elephants' heads, are used in ceremonies for the dead, and the statuettes of the Bamileke are carved in human and animal figures. The Tikar people are famous for beautifully decorated brass pipes, the Ngoutou people for two-faced masks, and the Bamum for smiling masks. L'Institut Français d'Afrique Noire (French Institute of Black Africa) maintains a library in Douala that specializes in the sociology, ethnology, and history of Africa. Of the several museums, the Diamare and Maroua Museum has anthropological collections relating to the Sudanese peoples, and the Cameroon Museum of Douala exhibits objects of prehistory and natural history.

Students earn 16 semester credits on a 15-week experience designed to encourage a global awareness that enables people to live and act in an interdependent world. Groups of seven to 25 students are lead by one or two academic directors. Cameroon is a nation of diversity, both in its cultural and natural environments. Its dense tropical rainforest, central savannah, and northern semi-desert are home to over 125 ethnic groups and nearly as many languages and dialects. Imbued with tradition, as evidenced by its famed folklore, art, music, and wide variety of family systems, Cameroon also integrates three colonial heritages — French, British, and German — into its ethnic mix. Today, social and economic development are presenting unique challenges to Cameroon’s ethnic pluralism and traditional lifestyles. Yaound©, the thriving capital, and Dschang, a temperate city nestled among verdant hills, provide ideal backdrops for your study of a nation striving to preserve its cultural heritage and environmental diversity in the face of changes brought about by globalization.

    INFORMATION FOR 2003-04
    Dschang
    Stretching from the fringes of the Sahara in the north to the borders of Congo and Gabon in the south, Cameroon is a striking study in diversity. The country’s four distinct geographic regions encompass everything from lush rain forests to rugged volcanic peaks, from spectacular waterfalls to the cruel beauty of the desert landscape. And Cameroon’s ethnic make-up is no less varied than its geography: The north is populated by Hausa, Fulbé, Sudanese, and Choa Arab peoples; in the west the Bamiléké are the largest ethnic group, followed by the Tiker and the Bamoun; and the area south of the River Sanaga is home to several Bantu groups, among them, Fang, Ewondo, Boulou, Eton, Bassa, Bakoko, and Douala. Lay on top of that Cameroon’s colonial past of German, French, and British occupation and one begins to get a sense of the country’s complicated ethnic identity.
    The School for International Training’s (SIT) Cameroon Culture and Development Program is based in the small German-founded town of Dschang. The program devotes itself to examining several contrasting influences in this diverse country, including urban and rural sociological factors, colonial and independent historical heritages, Anglophone and Francophone cultural facets, and rain forest and desert geography.
    Yaoundé, the nation’s capital, provides a real contrast to Dschang and its environs. Three of the eight weeks of classes will be held in the capital city, taught by local professors from the Universities of Yaoundé I and II.

Last December, our group of ATA delegates were privileged to attend the Annual Ngondo Festival in Doula, which takes place in early December. This was an outstanding spectacle with deep spiritual significance; an occasion the visitor will never forget. It is a ritual in which magic and reality come into play, to celebrate the unity of the SAWA community and the bond between the SAWA people and their ancestors who are believed to live in the waters. The Ngondo festival offers traditional dances and choral music, handicraft exhibitions, canoe parade, canoe race, carnival, and the collection of the ancestors' message from the bottom of the sea. - In the West and northwest, ' Funerals' constitute an occasion during which there are colorful ceremonies in memory of the dead ;
