    A Short History of Cambodia
The following historical account of Cambodia has been passed down to me by word of mouth. In 1866, the French colonized Cambodia. In 1942 the Japanese invaded Cambodia and defeated the French who left to fight in Europe. In 1945, the U.S. bombed Nagasaki and Hiroshima forcing the Japanese to retreat from Cambodia. In 1946 the French returned to Cambodia to rule again. The following years saw The Ho Chi Minh, and Viet Minh armies fight the French in Cambodia, Vietnam and Loas.
In 1953 Prince Sihanouk introduced civil service for all Khmer students and by 1954 Cambodia declared independence. Meanwhile, the Viet Minh were still prevalent in Cambodia. Dep Choun the leader of the Cambodian army was determined to overthrow Sihanouk but failed and instead granted Dep Choun power over Siem Reap province, Kam Phun Tom province and Battambong province. For the next ten years Cambodia remained relatively peaceful under the reign of Prince Sihanouk. In 1969, the U.S. began anti communist bombing raids in Cambodia and Loas, alongside the war with Vietnam. In 1970, General Lonols, leader of the Cambodian army, held a successful military coup against the Prince Sihanouk and then Sihanouk retreated to China. From there, Sihanouk broadcast to the Cambodian people to fight Lonols army with the support of the Viet kong and Chinese troops. Lonol, however had the support of powreful allies from Thailand, south Vietnam and the U.S. and by 1973 defeated the Viet Kong.

    http://www.diacritica.com/sobaka/dossier/sihanouk.html
    Name: King Norodom Sihanouk
    Location: Cambodia
    Affiliation: FUNCINPEC
    Profession: king, movie director, songwriter
    Born: All Hallows Eve, 1922
    Died: -n/a-
    Claim to Fame: his dimples
    Body Count: -n/a-
Other: -n/a- Aside from gemstones, virgin timber and grisly metaphors, wily politicians are Cambodia's most ample natural resource. Politicians here don and discard more masks by lunchtime than their colleagues in Vietnam or Thailand do all day. The grey eminence of Cambodia's slippery political class is a kind of National Grandpa, King Norodom Sihanouk. The King has carefully crafted his latter-day reputation as a benevolent father figure, but he wasn't always this way. As a young buck, Sihanouk bagged more broads than Wilt Chamberlain (he claimed it's a family tradition). At peace conferences during his exile, he would often break out into spontaneous renditions of Tom Jones medleys between wise aphorisms about shooting craps and seducing movie stars. He's written several hundred songs and his film work in the 1970s makes him the most accomplished director in Cambodian history. Sihanouk was described as "feisty" by admirers, "vain" by detractors and "god" by Cambodians being worked to death in the insane agrarian nightmare of the Khmer Rouge - to which the old man would smile and play a little jazz saxophone. He was sometimes pro-Charlie, sometimes pro-American; sometimes backing the Khmer Rouge against his domestic enemies, sometimes opposing them. The philosophy behind the Sihanouk mystique is that he is always pro-Sihanouk.

Cambodian PM tells U.N. to think again
Hun Sen was himself once a member of the Khmer Rouge but left before it seized power PHNOM PENH, Cambodia Cambodia's prime minister has called on the United Nations to reconsider its withdrawal from talks on bringing former Khmer Rouge leaders to trial, urging the world body not to "fall into the wrong path again" with the country's former rulers. Hun Sen told reporters Monday that Cambodia could wait "two or three more months" for the United Nations to change its mind, but said his government would not wait indefinitely. "I think it is not yet [too] late for the U.N. to change the decision," he said. In his first comments on the U.N. withdrawal from negotiations, Hun Sen reprimanded the organization for once recognizing the Khmer Rouge as the country's legitimate rulers. Despite being evicted from Phnom Penh in 1979 by a Vietnamese invasion force, the Khmer Rouge and their allies held Cambodia's seat at the United Nations well into the 1980s.

    180. Cambodia - The Sihanouk-Hun Sen Meeting
Article on the 1987 meeting between the two cambodian leaders aimed at national reconciliation.
    http://countrystudies.us/cambodia/86.htm
    The Sihanouk-Hun Sen Meeting
Cambodia Table of Contents Hun Sen's April 1987 proposal for a talk with Sihanouk was resurrected in August when the prince sent a message to Hun Sen through the Palestine Liberation Organization's ambassador in Pyongyang. Sihanouk was hopeful that his encounter with Hun Sen would lead to another UN-sponsored Geneva conference on Indochina, which, he believed, would assure a political settlement that would allow Vietnam and the Soviet Union to save face. Such a conference, Sihanouk maintained, should include the UN secretary general, representatives of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, Laos, Vietnam, and the four Cambodian factions. He also suggested the inclusion of ASEAN countries, members of the defunct International Control Commission (India, Canada, and Poland), and other concerned parties. Sihanouk was clearly in the spotlight at this point. It was possible that his personal diplomacy would stir suspicion among his coalition partners, as well as among Chinese and ASEAN leaders. It was also possible that he might strike a deal with Phnom Penh and Hanoi and exclude the Khmer Rouge faction and its patron, China. Mindful of such potential misgivings, Sihanouk went to great lengths to clarify his own stand. He said that he would not accept any "high position" in the illegal PRK regime, that he would disclose fully the minutes of his talks with Hun Sen, and that he would not waver from his commitment to a "neutral and noncommunist" Cambodia free of Vietnamese troops.
