Cambodians storm Thai embassy

BANGKOK, Thailand Described as the "first step to normalizing bilateral ties," Thailand will send a delegation to Cambodia to assess the damage caused by recent anti-Thai riots that devastated relations between the two countries. The officials are set to leave Bangkok on Tuesday and will inspect the destruction caused by rioting mobs that stormed and torched the Thai embassy in Phnom Penh, the Cambodian capital, on Wednesday. The rioters also torched or vandalized hotels and other Thai-owned business. The rampage forced Thailand to evacuate more than 700 citizens by military plane and plunged Cambodia into a diplomatic crisis with Thailand, with Bangkok closing its border with its eastern neighbor, downgrading ties and suspending economic cooperation. Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has criticized his Cambodian counterpart for not doing enough to control the riots.

Explosion rocks Cambodian poll
From CNN Correspondent Tom Mintier
Election campaigning, Cambodian style. Story Tools PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (CNN) In an already tense atmosphere surrounding Cambodia's general election, which began Sunday, at least one grenade exploded outside the FUNCINPEC party headquarters damaging nerves more than anything else. About 30 minutes later, two unexploded grenades were found across the street from the Royal Palace, where King Norodom Sihanouk lives. There were no reports of injuries in either incident. The grenade exploded about five hours after voting began at 7 a.m. (8 p.m. Saturday ET, midnight GMT). Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Sen who is seeking another five years in power and his ruling Cambodian People's Party are widely expected to win another term. He is being challenged by Prince Norodom Ranariddh and his FUNCINPEC party, and Sam Rainsy and his eponymous opposition party. Hundreds of international observers from more than two dozen countries were on hand to monitor the vote.

Cambodians storm Thai embassy

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia Cambodia's opposition leader Sam Rainsy is being detained in Thailand, an official has told Reuters new agency. Rainsy was detained for his own safety in case his presence in Thailand sparked violence, after arriving in Bangkok to hold a news conference about this week's anti-Thai riots in Phnom Penh. Thai authorities responded to the riots by barring all Cambodian citizens from entry into the country. Protesters in Phnom Penh damaged the Thai embassy and more than a dozen Thai-related businesses. Meanwhile, Thailand's prime minister has criticized his Cambodian counterpart for not doing enough to control the riots.

History
Very little is known about prehistoric Cambodia, although archeological evidence has established that prior to 1000 BC Cambodians subsisted on a diet of fish and rice and lived in houses on stilts, as they still do today. From the 1st to the 6th centuries, much of Cambodia belonged to the South-East Asian kingdom of Funan, which played a vital role in developing the political institutions, culture and art of later Khmer states. However, it was the Angkorian era, beginning in the 8th century, that really transformed the kingdom into an artistic and religious power. Forces of the Thai kingdom of Ayudhya sacked Angkor in 1431, leaving the Khmers plagued by dynastic rivalries and continual warfare with the Thais for a century and a half. The Spanish and Portuguese, who had recently become active in the region, also played a part in these wars until resentment of their power led to the massacre of the Spanish garrison at Phnom Penh in 1599. A series of weak kings ruled from 1600 until the French arrived in 1863. After some gunboat diplomacy and the signing of a treaty of protectorate in 1863, the French went on to force King Norodom to sign another treaty, this time turning his country into a virtual colony in 1884. Following the arrival of the French, a relatively peaceful period followed (even the peasant uprising of 1916 was considered peaceful). In 1941 the French installed 19-year-old Prince Sihanouk on the Cambodian throne, on the assumption that he would prove suitably pliable. This turned out to be a major miscalculation as the years after 1945 were strife-torn, with the waning of French colonial power aided by the proximity of the Franco-Viet Minh War that raged in Vietnam and Laos. Cambodian independence was eventually proclaimed in 1953, the enigmatic King Norodom Sihanouk going on to dominate national politics for the next 15 years before being overthrown by the army.

Cambodian PM fares well in polls
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia Preliminary results from Cambodia's first-ever local elections show the prime minister's party winning a large majority of seats in the capital. The weekend vote hailed as a major step toward strengthening democracy in Cambodia was to choose councils to govern 1,621 communes or clusters of villages across the Southeast Asian nation. While official results won't be known for weeks, Hun Sen's good showing in the capital for the ruling Cambodian People Party, or CPP, is expected to be reflected across the country. The CPP has held power for more than 20 years in the countryside. About 85 percent of Cambodia's 11 million people live in rural areas. Cambodia's early history, was significantly influenced by India and China, particularly by the Funan Kingdom for the first six centuries AD, followed by the Khmers from Chenla state (chenla of land and chenla of water). This led to the foundation of the Khmer Empire, which survived until Thai forces of the Ayuthaya Kingdom sacked Angkor in 1431. Several centuries of conflict followed, mostly with Thailand, and also with the Spanish and Portuguese. In 1863, at its own request, it became a French Protectorate. In 1941, the French placed Prince Sihanouk on the throne, believing he would play a submissive role. To their surprise, Sihanouk dissolved the national parliament in January 1953, declared martial law, and campaigned for independence, which was proclaimed on 9 November 1953. The country was recognised as the Kingdom of Cambodia by the Geneva Conference of May 1954.
During the Vietnam conflict, Sihanouk declared neutrality, but foreseeing that a communist victory was inevitable, he broke diplomatic relations with Washington, gave sanctuary to North Vietnamese Communist fighters, and allowed China to ship arms through the country. When the Vietnam War escalated in 1969, the US began bombing suspected Viet Cong base camps in Cambodia.
