(This is a collection of information from many sources. Feel free to comment on or add to it.) For many years the Thai / Cambodian border served as a separate or second Cambodia. The perspectives from the border were different from those inside Cambodia. There was even a tension and friction between aid agencies working on opposite sides of the border. People working on the border were accused of helping the KR and supporting military action, those working in Cambodia were accused of supporting and prolonging an untenable and dictatorial regime installed by the Vietnamese. a brief history
"... We can know through the universal language of dance when we are moved, and when the quality of a people's art has touched our common humanity. That is the case with the Khmer classical dancers. And of course, there is something hopeful here in that dance. From the very presence of past holocaust, we take some comfort in these dancers and their renewed dedication to all that is good and noble and beautiful and lasting in the culture of Cambodia. Your grace inspires us. Through you, your nation and it's traditions will live on after the barbarians of the recent past are remembered only in the nightmares of your brave people." ROBERT DOLE - U.S. Senator (Remarks on the Khmer dance troupe performance, Cannon Rotunda, May 10, 1983) Cambodian classical dance plays a very important part in Cambodian culture. It has been associated with the Royal Court of Cambodia for over a thousand years. Recognized by it's graceful, elegant gestures (kbach) and elaborate costumes, this beautiful dance form has come to embody the historical traditions and values of Khmer throughout the world. Press Release: Triangle Television

Cambodia' television documentary- beyond a tragic history 'Cambodia' - a people move on from their tragic past A Triangle Television documentary Triangle Television is to screen a New Zealand-made documentary that reveals the ability of Cambodian people to look beyond their tragic history and adapt to modern-day living. 'Cambodia', a documentary produced by Mark Nissen of Eye Film, provides an extraordinary glimpse of day-to-day life in Cambodia and also captures the anguish of its violent past. It will be broadcast on Saturday, May 15 at 9pm. Nissen produced the documentary after a review of his personal 'travelogue' video footage of two excursions to Cambodia, in 2000 and 2002, revealed a wealth of outstanding material suitable for compilation into a television programme. An estimated two million Cambodians died in 1975-79 when the brutal Khmer Rouge regime, led by the late Pol Pot, came to power. The United Nations proposed last year to establish an international tribunal to try surviving leaders of the movement. 'Cambodia' presents a country full of hope, beauty and joy as well as the reminders of a horrifying past.

The Cambodian genocide of 1975-1979, in which approximately 1.7 million people lost their lives (21% of the country's population), was one of the worst human tragedies of the last century. As in Nazi Germany, and more recently in East Timor, Guatemala, Yugoslavia, and Rwanda, the Khmer Rouge regime headed by Pol Pot combined extremist ideology with ethnic animosity and a diabolical disregard for human life to produce repression, misery, and murder on a massive scale. Mini-Unit Subtopic: Cambodian New Year Grade Level: Author: Kathy Moss Background: Cambodia is a country located in South-East Asia. On some maps it is referred to by its former name, Kampuchea (kam-poo-CHEE-uh). It is mostly flat land with a few mountains on the southern border. Some of the countries surrounding Cambodia are Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and Malaysia. The capital of Cambodia is Phnom Penh (puh NAWM pen). Khmer (cah'MY) is the official language. The population is 7.1 million people. Cambodia has undergone conflict and invasions for several years. Because of these wars, hundreds of thousands of educated people have fled the country to find safety. With the loss of so many skilled workers the country has been weakened. As a result of this loss Cambodia is very poor. Agriculture is a way of life in Cambodia. There are many small farms and plantations. Many farmers harvest rice. Cambodia is also one of the major world producers and exporters of rubber. The people of Cambodia are concerned about the well-being of others. Helping one another is a custom of the South-East Asian people. The main religion of Cambodia is Buddhism. With this religion comes the belief that one can be freed from the pain and suffering of the world through righteous thinking and living. Buddhists believe that a person's life in the hereafter will be better if they fill their present life with good conduct and good deeds. The Buddhist monks teach them how to live a moral life and aid them in understanding the teachings of Buddha. Cambodian families often go to the Temple to pray to Buddha. Many families have small altars in their homes where they can pray to Buddha and their ancestors.

Cambodians defy violence to vote
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (CNN) Incidents of violence have marred Cambodia's landmark local elections, but voters continued to turn out in high numbers at the polls. A candidate from the opposition Sam Rainsy party candidate was found dead Saturday night in his home near the capital. Police ruled the hanging a suicide, saying the man had a history of depression, but party officials said they suspected foul play. An election observer was found dead Saturday in Svay Rieng province, authorities said Sunday. He had been bound, stabbed multiple times and shot in the eye. The man's boss said he suspected his employee was tortured. Despite the violence, voters cast ballots in record numbers Sunday, according to official estimates and eyewitness reports. The major issues, which have been discusses in several public forums, are clean water, lower electricity and water prices, and improvements in roads, schools, and health care.

Fall 2003 In a tumultuous world… It is estimated that more than 110 million land mines are buried throughout the world. Buried within Afghanistan, Angola, Iraq, Kuwait and Cambodia are the largest concentrations of land mines. In Cambodia efforts at clearing mines around Angkor Wat and the major tourist sites have been successful. However, millions of mines remain buried and significantly impact the lives of the Cambodian people. …one vision, when shared by others… As a child soldier, Aki Ra lived through Cambodia's tumultuous past. Today he is taking an active part in rebuilding the country he loves. In 1999 Aki Ra established the Cambodia Land Mine Museum in Siem Reap near Angkor Wat. His dedication and sincerity enable others to more fully understand Cambodian culture and to see first hand the resolve the Cambodian people have to address the issue of land mines.
