A Brief Cambodian Khmer History. It was during this tragic era in cambodian historythat Tuol Sleng Prison came into existence as a place of torture and murder.

A Brief Cambodian Khmer History
Cambodia has a complex 2000-year history. Prior to A.D. 800 the indigenous Khmer and many surrounding groups struggled to control the land and resources of the region. A 600-year "period of greatness" was reached during the Angkor era from A.D. 802 to 1431. The spectacular temple complex Angkor Wat was constructed and served as the capitol of the kingdom during that time. Even today, Angkor Wat serves as a national symbol and rallying point for Cambodians across the globe, its outline gracing the country's national flag. Cambodian culture blends influences from Hinduism, Brahmanism, and Theravada Buddhism. The Khmer Buddhist belief system adapted symbols and rituals from all of these streams.
A combination of national self-determination and deference to royal authority foreshadowed the future of the Cambodian nation. After 1432 and the death of the Angkor kings, Cambodia became a contested territory. In the 19th century Europeans began traveling to Southeast Asia. Like its neighbor Vietnam, Cambodia would become part of French colonial Indochina. During World War II, Indochina was occupied by Japan. Later, with the Allied victories in Europe and the Pacific, France tried to reassert its power over Indochina and became embroiled in a war in Vietnam that finally ended in 1954 with France's defeat and withdrawal. The Cambodians, taking advantage of France's conflict in Vietnam, demanded independence. In 1955 Cambodia established a constitutional monarchy with Prince Norodom Sihanouk as prime minister.

Photos by T hese one hundred haunting photographs of helpless Cambodians facing death were token in a secret prison in Phnom Penh, between the middle of 1975 and the first few days of 1979. Several of the prisoners have just hod their blindfolds removed. As they stare at their captors, they have no idea where they are, who is taking the pictures or what will happen to them.
None of them was ever released. After torture and interrogation, sometimes stretching over several months, all of these men, women and children were brutally put to death.
In those days the prison was known by its code name, S-21. Cambodia, under its Communist rulers, called itself Democratic Kampuchea (DK) and was probably the most revolutionary government in the world. The country was led by a smooth featured, soft spoken former schoolteacher named Saloth Sar, who used the pseudonym Pol Pot. He was the secretary general of Cambodia's Communist party, known since pre-revolutionary times to outsiders as the Red Khmer or Khmer Rouge. He kept himself hidden, and so did the pa rty. People outside its ranks knew only of a shadowy, omnipotent revolutionary organization ( Angkar padevat ) which had as many eyes as a pineapple."

Cambodian-American Heritage, Inc.
(CAHI) is a non-profit organization, founded in 1980. The mission of the organization is the preservation of Cambodian arts and culture here in the United States. The centerpiece of the organization's cultural activities is its dance troupe and music ensemble. For almost 20 years, the troupe has performed selections from the repertoire of Cambodian classical and folk dances. In recent years, the dance troupe and music ensemble have performed in a variety of settings including the 150th anniversary of the Smithsonian Institution, the National Gallery of Art, the Freer Gallery of Art, the American Red Cross, presidential inaugural events, various folk art and heritage festivals and our annual observance of Cambodian New Year during the month of April. Music and dance have played an important role in Cambodian culture, as part of religious and court ceremonies dating back to the 7th Century. This dance and music tradition, passed down from one generation to the next, is an indelible part of Cambodian culture...the lifeblood of Cambodian history, myth and legend, both in the classical dance and the rich and varied folk dances. The state of this highly ornate and stylized art form was seriously threatened in modern times during the rule of the notorious Khmer Rouge regime. From 1975 to 1979, the Khmer Rouge brutalized the Cambodians perished during the period of Khmer Rouge ascendancy. Among the artistic community, it is estimated that 90 percent of the dancers and teachers of the Royal Ballet and students and faculty at the University of Fine Arts perished during this dark period of Cambodian history.

I ve watched them grow up and study Russian history and American history, Loungsays, and they didn t know any cambodian history. They didn t understand us.
http://www.khmerinstitute.org/comments/comr8.html
1 Jan 2001 Dear Khmer Institute: It was with more than a little dismay that I read yet another article in which Ms. Ung has perhaps invited more discussion about her book. In a CNN internet-only piece in the Book News section of the website (30 DEC 2000), Ms. Ung continues her mission to "explain" the rationale behind her publication. Yet, rather than clarifying and perhaps mollifying any of the concerns that have been raised about certain aspects of her book, she is apparently content with adding even more fuel to an already roaring fire. In the piece, she stated that one of the reasons for telling the story, she says, was to educate others, especially her two American nieces, Victoria, 15, and Maria, 19. "I've watched them grow up and study Russian history and American history," Loung says, "and they didn't know any Cambodian history. They didn't understand us. They're not going to get the story anywhere else and I just wanted them to know." Upon reading that I thought to myself, "Oh really Ms. Ung?" ... It is in her book that she tells how she and her brotherss and sisters would study Chinese, French, ... and THEN Khmer at home on the kitchen table, not to mention family members watching Chinese martial arts movies, admiring and flaunting physical "Chinese" attributes - in an apparent disparaging contrast to her perception of "Khmer" physiology, spending time swigging down American Coca-Cola, and enjoying special breakfasts of French bread and iced coffee, etc., etc.

    New Life in Christ Church
    Our Mission
is to bring a new life in Christ to the Cambodian people. Certainly eternal life, but Christ also came to bring life in all ways to all people, not the least of which is the prosperity to live in adequate provision, love, joy and peace. We believe a new life in Christ represents all these things and we are dedicated to encouraging opportunities for this new life wherever possible.
Our Vision 5 years ago was to plant a mother church in Phnom Penh to serve the people of Cambodia and train Nationals to plant other churches there. We have established the mother church in Phnom Penh and are now working to establish other congregations in the provinces.
