Cambodia History
Given the terrible events of the 20th century, it's difficult to comprehend the glory of Cambodia's ancient past: Cambodia was once the most powerful nation in the region. Khmers from China migrated to the area in prehistoric times and, by the 1st century, had built a mighty Hindu state. Cambodia's power continued to grow until the empire extended from the Bay of Bengal to the South China Sea. The nation's decline began with increasing waves of foreign intervention from the 1500s to the 1800s. The French arrived last, in the mid 1800s, offering Cambodia protection from other outsiders. French protection quickly turned into control, and France ruled Cambodia until 1954. A fragile coalition government, led by communist leader Hun Sen and Sihanouk's son Prince Norodom Ranariddh, fell apart in 1997 following a successful coup by Hun Sen. After overwhelming victory in the latest elections (reported to have been less than fair), Hun Sen is now the undisputed head of Cambodia's government.

Cambodia Before the Holocaust

(The players. Clockwise from bottom left: KR chairman Pol Pot; US president Richard Nixon; KR foreign minister Ieng Sary; KR security chief Khieu Samphan; Cambodian prime minister Lon Nol; King Norodom Sihanouk) In the grand scheme of Cambodian history, 45 months of communist rule may seem seem like a random tangent when compared with over a thousand years of Cambodian culture. But the Cambodian holocaust is much more complex than that - a long series of events encompassing the entire 20th century may all be seen as contributing factors. In Cambodia Before the Holocaust you can explore the many interconnected episodes of modern Cambodian history that led to the Khmer Rouge regime. For first-time readers we recommend you examine each subchapter in the order presented; for those of you with specific interests in certain aspects of Cambodian history you can jump between each section by choosing hyperlinks for the subchapters listed below. Lawrence Weschler [FN1] January 7, 1999, marked the twentieth anniversary of the demise of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, a genocidal regime that killed an estimated one-third of the Cambodian population in less than four years of rule. [FN2] Two decades later, the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge have yet to be examined by an impartial authority [FN3] and Cambodian politics remain turbulent, impeding the peaceful development of Cambodian civil society. These two phenomena arguably are linked; until the Cambodian government and the international community develop a policy to repair the damage inflicted by the Khmer Rouge, the Cambodian people will be unable to live in a peaceful society. In order for Cambodian society to heal, the full truth about the Khmer Rouge regime must be examined and disseminated, creating a history that Cambodians can teach to their children. [FN4] While a strong case can be made for the need to prosecute the members of the Khmer Rouge, [FN5] an international tribunal for Cambodia may be most effective if limited to the prosecution of top leaders. History by other means
by Anthony Daniels W Of course, daily life has to go on, even after a catastrophic historical experience. Indeed, such an experience is soon forgotten, in the sense of not being present in the mind all the time. For example, I recall the time I crossed into Germany from France with my mother. It was nearly thirty years since my mother had fled Germany, and the same period of time had elapsed between the end of the war and then as between the overthrow of the Khmer Rouge and now; and, having sworn never to return, it was the first time she had been back. In those days, there were still borders and border guards in Western Europe, and on the German side they found it puzzling that a person such as my mother, who was born in Berlin, should be traveling on a British passport. They had a discussion between themselves about it, and appeared not to be able to think of any explanation at all of this curious circumstance. I hasten to add that they were clearly not stomping Nazis. The physical grace and delicacy of the Cambodians, and their friendly good humor, sits ill with the abysmal brutality of the Khmer Rouge, and raises questions akin to those raised by stories of concentration camp commandants who wept over

    History's lessons Dear Editor,
For over 600 years, Cambodia has steadily declined from its previous place of glory and power. Like any great empire, a period of decline is expected, but why did Cambodia's decline result in the rise of the Khmer Rouge and ultimately genocide in Cambodia? I do not seek a definitive answer to this question, but merely wish to briefly express my thoughts on this issue and the means by which Cambodia can move beyond its current decline.
History has generally given credit to the leader(s) of a nation as the force that molds and changes a nation. To a certain extent, this is true because leaders generally possess the powers to direct the movement of a nation.
However, with such movement, there must be a force that supports and pushes the movement forward. That force is the people, the accumulation of acts, thoughts, ideas and experiences of the people. A nation's history is not molded by leaders alone, but by society and all the factors that come into play within that society. Thus, Pol Pot did not rise to power by the mere force of his own will, but the will of millions of Cambodians who supported him.
The rise of the Khmer Rouge did not just happen by some mere chance, but events in Cambodia's history were a backdrop to the inevitable rise of Pol Pot. The existence of injustice, corruption, oppression of the peasants and tyrannical rulers have dominated Cambodian society for centuries. Thereby, when Pol Pot promised the peasants equality, power and justice, the peasants willingly welcome it with open arms.

    55. PPP 8/26: How To Slice A Century Of Cambodian History
back to headlines. COMMENT. How to slice a century of cambodian history.By David Chandler As far as Cambodia is concerned, the century
    http://www.phnompenhpost.com/TXT/comments/how2.htm
back to headlines COMMENT How to slice a century of Cambodian history By David Chandler
As far as Cambodia is concerned, the century just ending can be fruitfully described in several ways. An unpromising approach would be to cut the century more or less in half, with fifty-four years labelled "the colonial era" and the rest "Cambodia since independence."
A better approach would be to see Cambodia gradually emerging into a wider, largely indifferent world, buffeted by a succession of foreign influences, starting with France, continuing through a period of haphazard but brutal American interference followed by stretches of Chinese and Vietnamese Marxism-Leninism before "ending" in 1999 with an ex-Communist government facing the amorphous challenges of globalization.
A final approach to Cambodia's history in the 1900s, unpalatable to an historian, is to suggest that as Cambodia emerges into Southeast Asia and as Southeast Asia enters the world, Cambodia is losing the capacity to generate its own history. What had been in some sense an island or a village is being submerged in a global ocean, affected by global changes in climate, population, culture and economics over which no one in Cambodia has any control. Seen from this perspective, as from the third, "Cambodian" history as it has been constructed and written about in the past may be coming to an end, as "Cambodia" loses parts of its former meaning.

No one knows for certain how long people have lived in what is now Cambodia, as studies of its prehistory are undeveloped. A carbon-l4 dating from a cave in northwestern Cambodia suggests that people using stone tools lived in the cave as early as 4000 bc, and rice has been grown on Cambodian soil since well before the 1st century ad. The first Cambodians likely arrived long before either of these dates. They probably migrated from the north, although nothing is known about their language or their way of life. By the beginning of the 1st century ad, Chinese traders began to report the existence of inland and coastal kingdoms in Cambodia. These kingdoms already owed much to Indian culture, which provided alphabets, art forms, architectural styles, religions (Hinduism and Buddhism), and a stratified class system. Local beliefs that stressed the importance of ancestral spirits coexisted with the Indian religions and remain powerful today. Cambodia's modem-day culture has its roots in the 1st to 6th centuries in a state referred to as Funan, known as the oldest Indianized state in Southeast Asia. It is from this period that evolved Cambodia's language, part of the Mon-Khmer family, which contains elements of Sanskrit, its ancient religion of Hinduism and Buddhism. Historians have noted, for example, that Cambodians can be distinguished from their neighbors by their clothing - checkered scarves known as Kramas are worn instead of straw hats.
