CAMBAY, GULF OF, an inlet in the coast of India, in the Gujarat division of Bombay. It is about 80 m. in length, but is shallow and abounds in shoals and sandbanks. It is supposed that the depth of water in this gulf has been decreasing for more than two centuries past. The tides, which are very high, run into it with amazing velocity, but at low water the bottom is left nearly dry for some distance below the latitude of the town of Cambay. It is, however, an important inlet, being the channel by which the valuable produce of central Gujarat and the British districts of Ahmedabad and Broach is exported; but the railway from Bombay to Baroda and Ahmedabad, near Cambay, has for some time past been attracting the trade to itself. Khmer Rouge is victor of civil war and occupies Phnom Penh; reign of terror kills 1.5 million in next four years
Goes into hiding after Vietnamese invasion of Cambodia Dies April 15 in Cambodian jungle "We were like babies learning to walk," he said of his "mistakes" Cambodia's ruthless dictator cheated justice, dying before he could answer for the atrocities committed during his unrelenting quest to create a rural Utopia By DAVID CHANDLER On April 17, 1998, barely 500 m inside Cambodia from Thailand, a frail, 73-year-old former dictatorknown by his nom de guerre, Pol Potwas cremated under a pile of rubbish and rubber tires. He had died two days earlier in a two-room hut, held prisoner by former colleagues who had accused him of betraying the revolutionary movement he had once led. It was an ignominious end for a man who inscribed a merciless agenda on the psyche of two generations of Cambodians. Between 1975 and 1979, Pol Pot presided over a communist regime known as Democratic Kampuchea. His harsh, utopian policies, derived in part from Maoist China, drove an estimated 1.5 million Cambodiansor one in fiveto their deaths from malnutrition, illness or overwork. At least 200,000 more were executed as enemies of the state. The ratio of deaths to population made the Cambodian revolution the most murderous in a century of revolutions.

Thailand in the late 1980s shared boundaries with Burma, Malaysia, Laos, and Cambodia. Although neither China nor Vietnam bordered Thailand, the territory of both countries came within 100 kilometers of Thai territory. Many parts of Thailand's boundaries followed natural features, such as the Mekong River. Most borders had been stabilized and demarcated in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in accordance with treaties forced on Thailand and its neighbors by Britain and France. In some areas, however, exact boundaries, especially along Thailand's eastern borders with Laos and Cambodia, were still in dispute in the late 1980s. Topography and Drainage
The most conspicuous features of Thailand's terrain are high mountains, a central plain, and an upland plateau. Mountains cover much of northern Thailand and extend along the Burmese border down through the Malay Peninsula. The central plain is a lowland area drained by the Chao Phraya and its tributaries, the country's principal river system, which feeds into the delta at the head of the Bight of Bangkok. The Chao Phraya system drains about one-third of the nation's territory. In the northeastern part of the country the Khorat Plateau, a region of gently rolling low hills and shallow lakes, drains into the Mekong River through the Mae Nam Mun. The Mekong system empties into the South China Sea and includes a series of canals and dams.

Cambodia also has a coastline of 803 kilometres along the Gulf of Thailand An estimated 20 per cent of land is used for agriculture and five per cent consists of rivers and lakes. Prominent features of the Cambodian landscape are the large Tonle Sap (Great Lake), the Bassac River systems, and the Mekong River. The Tonle Sap is linked to Phnom Penh, the capital city, by a 100-kilometre long river. Cambodia is composed of 20 provinces, three of which have maritime boundaries, two municipalities, 172 districts, and 1,547 communes.

    Introduction

Following a five-year struggle, communist Khmer Rouge forces captured Phnom Penh in 1975 and ordered the evacuation of all cities and towns; over 1 million displaced people died from execution or enforced hardships. A 1978 Vietnamese invasion drove the Khmer Rouge into the countryside and touched off 13 years of fighting. UN-sponsored elections in 1993 helped restore some semblance of normalcy, as did the rapid diminishment of the Khmer Rouge in the mid-1990s. A coalition government, formed after national elections in 1998, brought renewed political stability and the surrender of remaining Khmer Rouge forces.

The aim of the project is to study the events that occurred during the period of Khmer Rouge rule, 1975-1978, so as "to learn as much as possible about the tragedy, and to help determine who was responsible for the crimes of the Pol Pot regime." The major resources available are four databases: bibliographic, biographic, geographic and photographic. The bibliographic database holds more than 3000 items and can be queried with the aid of the search engine provided. The other databases can also be queried with the aid of a search engine. However, all this is not particularly useful for the non-specialist as the subject category associated with the bibliographic database does not appear to throw up many items.
