Russian-Cambodian scientific and cultural cooperation
General Information: A significant potential is accumulated in the sphere of scientific and cultural cooperation between Russia and Cambodia. During the period of eighties thousands of Cambodian specialists were trained in the former USSR. The basis for training Cambodian scientific personnel destroyed during the genocidal regime of the Khmer Rouge was restored under the technical assistance of our country and several educational centres as well as technological and agricultural institutes were established. USSR scientists carried out large scale geological and exploration works and researches in the fields of plants selection, biology and environment protection. Positive results were achieved in humanitarian sphere. Soviet experts complied comprehensive Khmer-Russian dictionary, manual of Khmer grammar, conducted researches in Cambodian history, ethnography and literature as well as took part in restoration of the ancient temple complex Angkor.

Culture
Thankfully, much of Cambodia's cultural heritage survived the Khmer Rouge's 'clean slate' approach to history. Along with the estimated two million Cambodians who died, millions of artefacts, statues and books were destroyed, but famous examples of Angkorian-era architecture like Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom emerged relatively unscathed. The National Museum in Phnom Penh is the best place to see examples of Khmer sculpture, in particular the beautifully depicted Hindu deities. The country's most tangible link with its glorious past is its highly stylised royal ballet, traditionally linked to the dance of Thailand, Java and India. Dance was also threatened by the Pol Pot years, with only one seamstress surviving to pass on the ancient techniques of costume design. Theravada Buddhism is Cambodia's dominant religion. Khmer is the official language - it's a tricky one to learn, but a little will go a long way. English is fast becoming the dominant second language, overtaking French, which is still spoken by many people who grew up before the 1970s. In general, Khmer cuisine is similar to Thai, but with fewer spices. A Cambodian meal almost always includes a soup, and fish is the nation's mainstay - grilled freshwater fish, wrapped in lettuce or spinach and dipped into a nutty fish sauce, is a particular speciality. 'Salad' dishes are flavoured with coriander, mint and lemongrass - three flavours which find their way into many Cambodian dishes. The French influence is best seen in the daily-baked bread. Sweet dishes include sticky rice cakes and jackfruit pudding. Tap water is best avoided, so stock up on mineral water, fruit-smoothy concoctions and the usual array of soft drinks. The proliferation of 'muscle wines' are best avoided.

    We, the people of Cambodia
Accustomed to having been an outstanding civilization, a prosperous, large, flourishing and glorious nation, with high prestige radiating line a diamond Having declined grievously during the past two decades, having gone through suffering and destruction, and having been weakened terribly, Having awakened and resolutely rallied and determined to unite for the consolidation of national unity, the preservation and defense of Cambodia's territory and precious sovereignty and the fine Angkor civilization, and the restoration of Cambodia into an " Island of Peace" based on multi-party liberal democratic responsibility for the nation's future destiny of moving toward perpetual progress, development, prosperity, and glory,
    WITH THIS RESOLUTE WILL
We inscribe the following as the Constitution of the Kingdom of Cambodia:
    CHAPTER 1
    Sovereignty
    Article 1-
    • Cambodia is a Kingdom with a King who shall rule according to the Constitution and to the principles of liberal democracy and pluralism.

Cambodian Cultural Village On the road from the Siem Reap airport to Siem Reap town: here are a few hasty shots made while learning to use my digital camera. While Chou Ta-Kuan's accounts may refer to some female nudity in the Angkor era, this artist takes enthusiasm in historical depiction Why look, here's the man himself! This Chinese account is a rare account of Angkor near the full height of the empire. Cham display. Madame Tussaud's it ain't, but they're trying. Classic singers - Sin Si Simuth and... can't make out the plaque. Below: the audience watching them. Phnong display. The photo I expect most foreigners will pay attention to. There's no Khmer Rouge era display, but this is the UNTAC one. My take? UNTAC soldiers did a lot more than hang out in brothels, but they did contribute to a boom in prostitution. This is perhaps the closest the display gets to the rather violent last quarter century. (Who wants to see negative stuff on their day off, anyway?) But hey, there's more! Towering over the whole village is a replica of Phnom Kulen. No landmines on this one!
