Cambodia's ancient temple city is one of the wonders of the oriental world. Masterpieces of decorative details as well as of architectural style, its awe-inspiring ruins survive as testament to the spectacular achievements of Southeast Asia's greatest civilization. Like Cambodia itself, Angkor has suffered bitter changes of fortune down the centuries, none more so than in our own time. Today, again accessible after long years of civil war, the ruins are once more attracting world attention as a priceless heritage site. At the same time, Angor remains an enduring monument to the people of Cambodia, their past glories, their hopes and aspirations. Click for an article on the "History" of this famous temple site.

    Angkor and the Khmer Civilization
The great Khmer Empire, best known for its astonishing temples at Angkor, has long fascinated visitors, arm-chair tourists, and scholars alike. In his new book, "Angkor and the Khmer Civilization," archaeologist Michael Coe has written what I believe is, simply, the best current (2003) presentation of the history and culture of this wonderful (literally: full of wonders) ancient civilization. Reading Coe's book is like having a delightful one-on-one conversation with a first-rate thinker, scholar, and teacher. Coe's writing is superbly well-organized, logical, fascinating, concise, and comprehensive. The book is enhanced by numerous high-quality photo illustrations and maps, fully referenced bibliography and notes, and a better-than-average topical index. Most importantly, this book is obviously a labor of love. Coe, a well-known Mayanist, returns here to his first love, the archaeology of southeast Asia; although political circumstances (e.g.: the Vietnam War, the Pol Pot regime) prevented him from digging in the field, Coe has mastered the literature and walked the sites; his book illuminates the full chronological sweep of Khmer history and culture, from its prehistoric beginnings through the post-Classic period, as never before. It is intellectually exciting, a pleasure to read, and sure to delight anyone from the casual tourist to the experienced professional. Put it together with Freeman and Jacques' "Ancient Angkor," and you have the perfect companions for your next trip to Angkor.

Sunrise at Angkor Wat, Cambodia IN SEARCH OF THE BLACK PRESENCE IN CAMBODIA By RUNOKO RASHIDI DEDICATED TO THE GODFREY FAMILY I n regards to travel and lectures, 1999 was my most productive year to date. Internationally, in 1999, I lectured in Thailand, Hawaii, India, Russia, Trinidad, Venezuela and Guyana. The Ancestors were very good to me. It was wonderful set of experiences, and I frequently felt that I was in a kind of dream. All of this travel revolved around researching the African presence globally. All of my lectures were about who African people are, where we are, what we have done, and what we are doing. All along I felt that I was a sort of ambassador possessed of a strong sense of mission and purpose. THE BLACK PRESENCE IN CAMBODIA My last travel experience in 1999 took me to Thailand and Cambodia. In fact, Cambodia was the only country that I traveled to in 1999 where I didn't lecture. I went to Cambodia solely for research. My interest in the Cambodian kingdom of Angkor began in the mid-1970s when I came across John G. Jackson's powerful and informative volume

Cambodia Travel, Hotels, Sightseeing Tours Reservation Services Phnom Penh How to reach Phnom Penh The Magic of Cambodia Siem Reap
Angkor ceased to be a living city in 1431 when the Khmer abandoned it in face on constant attack from the Thai's. With time the ruins were all but swallowed up by dense jungle. An ancient civilization lost to nature. The popular myth but in fact Angkor was never lost as such, rather it became less and less accessible. It was still known locally as a place of pilgrimage, a vague memory in the minds of European missionaries. It is claimed that the last Kingdom was re-discovered by French naturalist Henri Mouhot in January 1860. Wether or not the Kingdom was ever lost remains a matter for debate but what is not in question is that the posthumous publishing of the accounts of Mouhot's travels did trigger European interest in Asia's single most remarkable archaeological site - The Temples of Angkor. Angkor Wat was built in the 12th century by Suryavarman II is the largest religious building in the world measuring at its base 1,500 metres by 1.300 metre. When one crosses the Naga bridge it appears as if there are just three towers. It is not until one has entered the inner courtyard that the other two are visible. It was originally built for worship to the Hindu gods. To the north stands the Bayon with 54 stone towers, each the face of Bodhisattva on each of the four sides and stands at the centre of Angkor Thom. It is surrounded by a moat and is approached at the four cardinal points through massive stone gates. Ta Prohm to the east of Angkor Thom is particularly fascinating as it is left as it was found with roots of the trees growing up though the masonry of the ancient temples.

Amazing Cambodia My impulsive decision has never worked out so well. When I talked to friends about some exotic place to visit just one day before the Easter Holidays, it seemed that Cambodia was only choice because it was easy for a Chinese national to get a Cambodian tourist visa. The plane ticket to Phnom Penh was expensive, but I really couldn't complain too much for such last minute travel plan. Cambodians seem to have a short collective memory. Perhaps that is the only way a people could cope with the wholesale genocide committed against them by their own compatriots. The usual principle "enemy of enemy is friend" does not apply in Cambodia. Vietnamese are universally hated in Cambodia but many people, especially country folks, voted in the UN-sponsored election for Prime Minister Hun Sen, who was installed by the Vietnamese after they drove out the Khmer Rouge. Khmer Rouge is cursed beyond redemption, but the Chinese and the Thais, both offered military help to the Khmer Rouge, are well liked. Cambodia is destined to rise again to take its respectful place in the world of nations. But for all the glory and sophistication of their ancient civilization, until understood by the Cambodians, the recent dark past warns outsiders that Cambodia may yet make another ugly turn in their extraordinary history.

Search WWW August 7, 2000: During the last month, we travelled through 5000 years of history. The journey began in Jerusalem, a tense city at the crossroads of 3 major religions. The emotions apparent in the streets inspired us to learn more about history and religion, setting the tone for the month. In the Middle East we learned about Christianity, Judaism, and Islam from guides, citizens, monks, whomever we could talk to or whatever we could read. Petra, in Jordan, blew us away with the carved sandstone tombs. We didn't expect the vivid blues, greens, yellows, whites, and reds swirled together in the living rock, forming natural decorations in the carvings. Petra exceeded our highest expectations, and one full day was not enough. The Red Sea beckoned. We jumped in for some fantastic diving with colorful coral and lionfish. Then we returned to discovery of ancient cultures with a cruise up the Nile. We couldn't believe how advanced the ancient Egyptian civilization and technology was - the temples and tombs that dot the banks of the Nile show fantastic sophistication. We floated along, observed 'modern' Nile living while we learned about the polytheistic culture that thrived starting in the 21st century BCE. We celebrated 9 months of marriage in Cairo, visiting the Great Sphinx. Then we travelled to China with a switch to Emperors and Buddhism. While the Forbidden City and Lama Temple were enjoyable, the scenery surrounding the Great Wall really made an impression on us. China possesses some beautiful countryside. The next four days we cruised along the Yangtze River to see the gorges that will be flooded after the completion of the world's largest dam.
