Japanese calligraphy is an art form that has been studied for over three thousand years. It is a specialized art using a brush and black ink to write kanji and Chinese characters. Shodo is written on Japanese paper (washi) using a bamboo and animal hair brush called a fude. The ink, called sumi, is obtained from charcoal and traditionally comes in sticks which must be rubbed with water on an inkstone until the right consistency is achieved. Much cheaper, pre-mixed bottled inks are now available, but these are used primarily for practice as stick inks are considered higher quality and chemical inks are more prone to bleeding over time, making them less suitable for use in hanging scrolls. The Arabic script was adopted in Iran quite soon after the Islamic conquest of AD 642, largely because it was the official script of the new state into which Iran was incorporated. Calligraphy is the highest art form of the Islamic civilization, and like all forms of art that came into contact with Iran, it was enhanced and developed by the Persians. It was practised not only by professional calligraphers, but also by princes and nobles themselves. Calligraphers were an essential requirement for any self-respecting court, both to instruct the prince's children in the principles of the art and to produce manuscripts for the royal library. Under the Timurids and the Safavids , calligraphy experienced perhaps its most brilliant development. In the late 14 th century Umar Aqta "with amputated hand", wrote a miniature Koran for Timur, which was so small that it could be fitted under the socket of a signet ring. When Timur disapproved of it because, according to a Prophetic tradition the Word of God should be written in big letters, the calligrapher produced another copy in which each was a cubit in length.

KETUBBAH BY GRACE These are marriage contracts which are from the tradition within Judaism. In Judaism they are called "ketubbot" (plural); singular is "ketubbah." To do these I have researched the Italian, French, Iraqi, Iranian, Jerusalem traditions and I present some with the original Aramaic text. Because people seem to want them in English, I have English script as well, and can create text to order. The artwork is original with each piece, and they are done in gouache on acid-free parchment. The illuminations are geometric or floral or have animal motifs, so it is possible to choose even the colors and inclination you prefer for a marriage or commitment ceremony, or just for your collection. The first example is a painting of mine, included so you can see my abilities. I have had fellowships for my art, and shows in New York, Edinburgh (Scotland), Wisconsin (Madison), Provincetown (Massachusetts) and Israel and my work is in collections in these places and others.
