contemporary arabic calligraphy designs
Arabic calligraphy is the most typical expression of the Islamic spirit. The different classical styles of the Arabic letters offer unlimited possibilities to the artist. The contemporary designs presented here indirectly utilize these styles to create an abstract, yet readable representation of words and provide a postmodern interpretation of the letters. The intent is to cross barriers and touch other languages and cultures for it is said: "The written word is a talisman, and the process of writing is a magic connected not only with the master's technique and skill, but also with his spiritual and moral character." Nihad Dukhan is a Palestinian who grew up in Gaza, holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, and is an Associate Professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Puerto Rico. He was extensively trained in the classical styles of Arabic calligraphy. His work in this new form has been exhibited in New York, Washington D.C., Chicago, and San Francisco.

103. Calligraphy: ChinaVista
calligraphy is understood in China as the art of writing a good hand with the brush or the study of the rules and techniques of this art.
http://www.chinavista.com/experience/calligraphy/calligra.html
based on material offered by Mr.Du Feibao Calligraphy is understood in China as the art of writing a good hand with the brush or the study of the rules and techniques of this art. As such it is peculiar to China and the few countries influenced by ancient Chinese culture. In the history of Chinese art, calligraphy has always been held in equal importance to painting. Great attention is also paid today to its development by holding exhibitions of ancient and contemporary works and by organizing competitions among youngsters and people from various walks of life. Sharing of experience in this field often makes a feature in Sino-Japanese cultural exchange. Chinese calligraphy, like the script itself, began with the hieroglyphs and, over the long ages of evolution, has developed various styles and schools, constituting an important part of the heritage of national culture. Chinese scripts are generally divided into five categories: the seal character zhuan the official or clerical script li the regular script kai the running hand xing ) and the cursive hand cao zhuan script by Deng Shi Ru
(1743¡ª1805 Qing Dynasty) The zhuan script or seal character was the earliest form of writing after the oracle inscriptions, which must have caused great inconvenience because they lacked uniformity and many characters were written in variant forms. The first effort for the unification of writing, it is said, took place during the reign of King Xuan (827-782 B. C.) of the Western Zhou Dynasty, when his taishi (grand historian)

History of calligraphy
The art of calligraphy as we know it today actually finds its origins in cave paintings. Back in the days when communication was a series of grunts, the written word was a mere pictorial representation of significant events in a cavemans life. As humans developed, the art of drawing pictures became quite highly developed and reached great heights under the direction of the Egyptians. About 3500 BC, the Egyptians created the highly stylized hieroglyphics for which they are so well known. These symbols were incised inside tombs or painted with brushes across papyrus paper. A few thousand years later, around 1000 BC, the Phoenicians went a step further and developed what is believed to be one of the first alphabets and writing systems. Luckily the Phoenicians were sea faring types and they readily passed along their new talents to every seaport through which they passed. bodyOffer(27251) They most likely influenced the Greeks who later developed their own form of writing which by 850 BC the Romans had adapted to suit the Latin language. It just so happens that Latin was the lingua franca of the churches of Europe in the Middle Ages and the monks (and a smattering of nobility) constituted the only literate members of society.

108. THE ART OF ARABIC CALLIGRAPHY
Welcome to this celebration of the art and craft of calligraphy. The art of calligraphy is hidden in the teaching method of the master .
http://www.geocities.com/Paris/LeftBank/7001/
The Arabic language is inseparably linked with the religion of Islam. The holy book of Islam, the Qur'an , played a central role in the development and evolution of Arabic script, and by extension, calligraphy. Today, calligraphy has become the most revered art form in the Islamic world because it links the literary heritage of the Arabic language with the religion of Islam. The result is an artistic tradition of extraordinary beauty, richness and power. Calligraphy is an extremely demanding activity, and most of the great Muslim masters devoted their lives to perfecting their art. Mastery of calligraphy requires not only the discipline of developing technical skill, but also the engagement of the calligrapher's moral force and personality. It will probably be perpetually under construction, but please come in anyway. I love calligraphy, both Chinese and Western. It's not really necessary to be good at Chinese, or even to know it, to enjoy Chinese calligraphy. You can think of it as abstract art, or (as I do) grace and movement recorded on paper. Or you might see it purely practically, as the ingenious innovations of generations of artists, all aimed at rendering the complicated but beautiful Chinese script in pleasing forms. Yes, that's my idea of "practical" when it comes to calligraphy!

Lessons in Calligraphy

When we speak of Turkish calligraphy, we refer to writing of aesthetic value in characters based on the Arabic script, which the Turks had adopted as their writing medium after their conversion to Islam. The Arabic characters gradually assumed an aesthetic function after the advent of Islam, and this process gathered momentum from the mid-eighth century onwards, so that calligraphy was already a significant art discipline by the time the Turks joined the Islamic world. Therefore it is necessary to begin with a brief review of the structure of Arabic characters and their development during the early centuries of Islam. The most succinct definition of calligraphy formulated by Islamic writers is, "Calligraphy is a spiritual geometry produced with material tools." The aesthetic values implied by this definition held true for centuries. Under this writing system most of the letters underwent a change of form according to whether they were positioned at the beginning, middle or end of a word. When transformed into an art the characters took on highly elaborate shapes, and the rich

Taking the way of the brush, becoming a shodoka
In the pursuit of a true art form where art meets spirituality I found Japanese Calligraphy, shodo, and its spiritual expression, Zen calligraphy. Since then the brush is rooted in my heart.
What is Japanese Calligraphy for me?
I remember that the first time I saw Zen calligraphy and paintings at an exhibition of Japanese Calligraphy in Berlin I was very impressed by the abstract beauty of this artwork. But there was another secret quality in this art that I was unable to identify at first sight.
Calligraphy is an image of the mind
To create the artist has to be in union with the true self. Then her/his artwork will transmit the timeless essence of the universe and communicate on the deepest level of our being.

[ Arabic Calligraphy ] Arabic Paintings Photo Album Arabic Poetry Links While most faiths have made use of figural images to convey their core convictions, Islam's early theocracy chose words (letters) and their shapes and sizes. Because Islam saw in figural arts a possible implication of idolatry, Islam looked instead to the artistry of calligraphy for religious expression. Safadi, Yasin Hamid (1978) writes, "The primacy of the word in Islam is reflected in the virtually universal application of calligraphy. Writing is given pride of place on all kinds of objectsobjects of everyday use as well as entire wall surface, mosque furniture, the interiors and exteriors of mosques, tombs, and al-Ka'ba, the most famous sanctuary of Islam. Arabic belongs to the group of Semitic alphabetical scripts in which mainly the consonants are represented. Arabic script is derived from the Aramic Nabataean alphabet. It is a script of 28 letters and uses long but not short vowels. These letters are derived from only 17 distinct forms, distinguished one from one another by a dot or dots placed above or below the letter. Short vowels are indicated by small diagonal strokes above or below letters. Written without dots and diacritical points, Arabic script looks flat and barren. But when the dots and diacritical points are added, the script come to life like a garden in spring.
