Tengwar Calligraphy
The basic principles for Tengwar calligraphy are the same as those for Roman-alphabet calligraphy. If you want to learn more about calligraphy there is a wealth of good books on the market. Here it will be sufficient to summarize the basics:
  • The beauty of calligraphy relies primarily on the interplay and contrast between thin and broad lines. To achieve this effect, a broad-tipped pen is preferable. There are good steel or fountain pens available. Ink or watercolour make good writing liquids.
In the tables below, the numbered arrows show the order and direction in which to draw the lines of the tengwar.

http://depts.washington.edu/chinaciv/callig/callmain.htm
In China, the style in which an individual writes has long been believed to communicate something essential about his or her personality, intellect, and abilities. Even today it is a common presumption that one can "read" the identity of the person through his or her handwriting. Young man practicing calligraphy source The European term calligraphy means "beautiful writing," and reflects an interest in ornamenting words on the page; most European calligraphy is highly stylized, regular, and decorated with flourishes, which in themselves are lacking in personal expression. Calligraphy in the West was always considered a minor art and tended to curb spontaneity, producing fairly static forms. In China, however, this was far from the case; the most widely practiced writing styles favored spontaneity, and the brush was thought to act like a seismograph in recording the movements of arm, wrist, and hand. East Asian calligraphy was established as a "high art" form well before the Tang dynasty. It has continuously enjoyed a high status among the arts ever since, and is practiced today by many people, including every school-aged child. This unit will cover calligraphy in China up through the Tang dynasty, with an emphasis on the Six Dynasties and Tang. It was during this period that calligraphy first began to flourish as an art form. By the Later Han, the basic script types had been created, and no new types developed after this time. The first writings to evaluate calligraphic style also date from this period. These texts reveal a notable shift toward seeing an expressive quality in writing that went beyond the mere ability to communicate meaning.

Islamic Calligraphy from a Private Collection
Editor's note: This is one in a series of articles showing objects from a private collection of Islamic art. This article covers highlights of the calligraphy collection.
JB: Many of our readersmyself includedapproach these calligraphic works with little or no background knowledge. Could you please introduce us to the field of calligraphy?

AR: There are two key facts that will help you appreciate the elevated position of calligraphy in the Islamic world: First, specific depictions of the human form are considered sacrilege in Islam . Second, as you learned when we discussed the amulet portion of my collection, verses of the Holy Koran figure significantly in everyday Islamic life.
JB: So, you're suggesting that these factors focused much creative and artistic energy on the written word?

AR: Indeed. And the calligrapher , because he could both delight the eye and feed the soul, held an honored place in the culture . The value of calligraphy was such that it could be readily converted into currency: calligraphic panels traded for their weight in gold
JB: Literally?

Founded in 1984, the organization now boasts a membership of over100 calligraphy enthusiasts, ranging from professional lettering artists to enthusiastic hobbyists and observers. The group's nine general meetings per year allow members to take advantage of programs and talks on specific areas of interest, and to make use of the society's extensive library. The library contains more than 500 publications on calligraphy, illumination, gilding, papermaking, bookbinding and other related crafts, as well as newsletters from 35 other guilds and societies. The Calligraphy Society of Ottawa also strives to increase public awareness of the lettering arts. An unjuried exhibition of members' work is held annually at the downtown branch of the Ottawa Public Library. In April, 2003, the library will once again feature the artistry of calligraphers living and working in our region. Reminder: the initial meeting of the 2003/2004 season will take place on Friday, September 5, 2003.

The Art of Calligraphy
"Ancient Iranians with an alphabet of 36 letters, used skins and pen to write, Instead of ear-then tablets"; W. Durant

http://www.greendragonarts.com/
Chinese Calligraphy Japanese Calligraphy Korean Calligraphy
is an art dating back to the earliest day of history and is, to this day, widely practiced throughout China and many parts of Asia. The neighboring countries of Japan, Korea, Taiwan and other Southeast Asian countries have all made the Chinese calligraphy system part of their own respective cultures. Kanji in Japanese and Han Mun in Korean are both names for essentially the same system of Chinese calligraphy writing. Even though Japan and Korea have since developed their own unique system of writing, both countries still use Chinese calligraphy as the traditional form of communication for many occasions. At Green Dragon Arts we make no distinctions between the Chinese calligraphy writing system, Kanji and Han Mun. The spectrum of the Chinese language, with its many subtle shades has made it a natural vehicle of expression for calligraphic art. One does not have to know Chinese to appreciate the beauty of Chinese calligraphy. This is because in essence, Calligraphy is an art; an art that combines the expression of literature with the expression of ink. A famous Chinese Calligrapher, Tu Meng of the Tang dynasty (618-905) developed 120 expressions to describe different styles of calligraphy and establish criteria for them. Like the many styles of painting, each calligraphic style was appreciated in its own right. Calligraphers were known by their interpretation of a style or styles, and as you can imagine, the boundaries of the styles are not always distinct.

Izzy Pludwinski is a professional calligrapher in both Hebrew calligraphy and English calligraphy. On this site you can view his works which touch on many fields : ketubo t, "fine-art" calligraphy, commercial work,
and most recently, a newly published limited edition book- Shir Hashirim - The Song of Songs , introducing a unique, lyrical Hebrew typeface he designed. He also offers a Hebrew Calligraphy Correspondence Course.
What his works have in common is a certain simplicity - the challenge of designing without reliance on illustration, underlying his belief in the power of the letters and words themselves, as expressed through pure calligraphy, to relate the emotional content of the text.
