Epilog
Chinese calligraphy Brush calligraphy) is an art unique to Asian cultures. Shu (calligraphy), Hua (painting), Qin (a string musical instrument), and Qi (a strategic boardgame) are the four basic skills and disciplines of the Chinese literati.
Regarded as the most abstract and sublime form of art in Chinese culture, "Shu Fa" (calligraphy) is often thought to be most revealing of one's personality. During the imperial era, calligraphy was used as an important criterion for selection of executives to the Imperial court. Unlike other visual art techniques, all calligraphy strokes are permanent and incorrigible, demanding careful planning and confident execution. Such are the skills required for an administrator / executive. While one has to conform to the defined structure of words, the expression can be extremely creative. To exercise humanistic imagination and touch under the faceless laws and regulations is also a virtue well appreciated.
By controlling the concentration of ink, the thickness and adsorptivity of the paper, and the flexibility of the brush, the artist is free to produce an infinite variety of styles and forms. In contrast to western calligraphy, diffusing ink blots and dry brush strokes are viewed as a natural impromptu expression rather than a fault. While western calligraphy often pursue font-like uniformity, homogeneity of characters in one size is only a craft. To the artist, calligraphy is a mental exercise that coordinates the mind and the body to choose the best styling in expressing the content of the passage. It is a most relaxing yet highly disciplined exercise indeed for one's physical and spiritual well being. Historically, many calligraphy artists were well-known for their longevity.

The rendering of the traditional designs in this collection is faithful to the originals, except for minor modifications to enhance legibility and reproduction quality. The feel of the calligrapher's hand writing is maintained as much as possible, and the strokes originally produced by the reed pen are meticulously analyzed and reproduced, with full control over the quality of each line and the construction of each path. The result is artwork of very high quality and fine detail, which can be enlarged to sizes previously possible only by commissioning original and very expensive art.
Scanning and auto-tracing is simply not acceptable to convey the subtleties and nuances of the delicate and highly refined art of Arabic calligraphy.

alligraphy is an art that just about anyone can do. All you need is a pen and paper, and you're ready to do calligraphy! Indeed, it requires very few materials - you don't need very much space - and, since you can probably write anyway, you already know the basics! Calligraphy is an art form in which patience and attention to detail are more important than artistic talent. That means you don't have to be an "artist" to be good at calligraphy!

Paintings of the Syrian calligrapher from his exhibition in Bonn/Germany, 1997.

Mohamad Ghanoum
Mohamad Ghanoum, born 1949 in Damascus and grown up in Syria is one of the greatest Calligraphers in the arab world. I first heard of him on an exhibition in the syrian embassy in Bonn, Germany in february 1997 which was organized by the Deutsch-Arabische Gesellschaft e.V. If you watch these wonderful pictures carefully, you can see verses from the Holy Qur'an and words like home, love or Damascus, which describes the artists feelings and thoughts. Here are some of my favourite pictures shown in this exhibition.

Welcome to the Connected Globe Japanese Calligraphy Site. This site will be bringing the beauty and fascination of Japanese Calligraphy to the world-wide audience of the World Wide Web. If you know nothing of Japanese Calligraphy then we hope that these pages will bring you an understanding and appreciation of this wonderful art form. If you are already a lover of calligraphy, we hope to bring you new works, in both classical and contemporary styles and we welcome your comments and feed-back. And if you appreciate superb technique in western art I suggest a visit to the pages of Aurelio Ródriguez López We begin with a brief introduction to Calligraphy that we hope will help those who are discovering this art for the first time. We also have an excellent on-line Calligraphy shop where you can buy books on calligraphy and Japanese calligraphy sets (they make great gifts). Next, we are fortunate to be able to present the work of the Japanese Calligrapher Mukon Ohmori. We had the honour during 1994 to present an exhibition of the works of Mukon Ohmori at The Galleries in London. Mukon Ohmori and his charming wife attended the opening of the exhibition, much to the delight of the many visitors. His opening speech tells us a great deal about the work.
