A lot of people will tell you this is the ideal time to go to school yourself, take a professional development course, plan for the upcoming school year, or clean out all the closets in your house. Don’t do any of that stuff. Well, let me clarify. What I want to say is - don’t make “doing” the priority, make your priority “being.” At the risk of sounding like a new-age airhead, I’d like to recommend resting. Repose, relaxation, and doing nothing are all honorable states. Our western culture values anything that’s action-packed. If something can be made to go faster then it must be better. People pay good money to take time management courses because they have so many things to do. Multi-tasking has become a way of life.

as a powerful tool to prevent

Repetitive Strain Injuries. Use the Alexander Technique
to regain the curiosity, ease,
and lightness of a child. This page maintained by Wire Rider Web Design Services

What is the Alexander Technique?
Alexander Technique is a hundred-year old educational method that increases understanding of our balance, coordination, posture and poise. It is helpful in many different situations: Eliminates:
  • Neck and back pain Headaches Repetitive strain injury (RSI) Poor coordination Work-related injuries
Improves:
  • Walking Balance Bending and reaching Lifting Healing after injury Public Speaking Playing music

Why does Alexander Technique have such wide application?
We often tighten our muscles habitually. This gives us unwanted discomfort and pain. We especially tighten our neck muscles even when doing simple tasks. Tightening our neck is not only uncomfortable, but also leads to imbalance of the whole body; our innate poise and ease-of-movement suffers. Over time we compensate for the sensory misinformation conveyed by our habits. We sometimes accept tight muscles as normal, adding to our stiffness and stress. Alexander technique addresses the problems of habitual tightening by showing us a new way to use the body. Almost everybody benefits from increased awareness of habits, muscular effort and balance. Office workers, musicians, nurses, carpenters, dentists, software engineers, housecleaners all have something in common. We all have habits that interfere with efficient use of the body. Whatever we do can become lighter and easier.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Background
Troops to Teachers (TTT) was established in 1994 as a Department of Defense program. The National Defense Authorization Act for FY 2000 transferred the responsibility for program oversight and funding to the U.S. Department of Education but continued operation by the Department of Defense. The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 provides for the continuation of TTT through Fiscal Year (FY) 2006. TTT is managed by the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES), Pensacola, Florida.
Goal and Objectives
Reflecting the focus of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, TTT's primary objective is to help recruit quality teachers for schools that serve low-income families throughout America. TTT helps relieve teacher shortages, especially in math, science, special education and other high-needs subject areas, and assists military personnel in making successful transitions to second careers in teaching.
Current Status
Funding has been appropriated for FY 2002 to provide financial assistance to eligible participants, provide placement assistance, referral services, and maintain a network of state offices. Military personnel interested in a second career in public education may submit an application to DANTES.
Program Function
The purpose of TTT is to assist eligible military personnel to transition to a new career as public school teachers in "high-need" schools. Counseling, referral, and placement assistance is provided through our network of state placement assistance offices. Twenty-five TTT State Support Offices have been established to assist participants with certification requirements and employment leads. The TTT homepage provides information and resource links, including a job referral system to allow participants to search for job vacancies as well as links to state Departments of Education, state certification offices, model resumes, and other job listing sites in public education.

States Anteing Up Supplements
To Teachers Certified by Board

By Jeff Archer Karen Huff has agreed to put her teaching skills under the microscope this school year. Before it's over, the teacher at Virginia Shuman Young Elementary School in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., will have put in long hours keeping journals of her instructional practice, submitted to being videotaped while leading her class, and prepared for a comprehensive, daylong exam covering both pedagogy and subject-matter content. If successful, she'll join the elite corps of her profession as an educator certified by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. And, thanks to legislation Florida passed last spring, she'll also enjoy a yearly bonus from the state, currently worth up to $6,800. "Initially, I was interested just because I thought it'd be a good learning experience for me, but the money also makes it worth it," said the 28-year-old educator. "It's definitely going to bring in better teachers and keep them in the classroom."
