SCHOOL LIBRARY MEDIA PROGRAMS AND STAFFING
Independent reading has been identified as one of the major sources of building reading and writing fluency. Avid readers typically engage in twenty times more independent reading than do less frequent readers. Children who are avid readers come from homes in which reading and library visits are encouraged by the family members (Becoming a Nation of Readers, Anderson et al, 1985). Independent reading and shared book experiences have been shown to have a profound effect on students studying English as a second language in areas of comprehension oral language, and writing as well. (The Power of Reading: Insights from the Research, Krashen, 1993.) Krashen further reports studies indicating that children who engage in free voluntary reading exhibit more mature writing styles and fluency. Children who are avid readers also come from schools in which teachers and professional library specialists promote programs that build a love of reading and allow regular student access to adequate library collections of print and non-print materials. Haunting statistics inform us that nationwide, over 15% of the public schools have no libraries. Yet, studies such as The Impact of School Library Media Centers on Academic Achievement show a strong positive correlation between library media programs and student achievement (Lance et al, 1993).

The program, headed by communication research associate professor Ute Ritterfeld (pictured) and communication professor Peter Vorderer (pictured), was praised for delving into aspects of video games that are much talked about but little researched. "USC’s computer games project is probably the largest and most diverse collection of professors and students studying the vast yet mysterious world of video games," the article said. "The research at USC focuses on the gamer rather than game design or development, and much of what they are doing is groundbreaking."

THIS DIGEST WAS CREATED BY ERIC, THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC INTRODUCTION Advocates of school library media programs have long been convinced of the relationship between quality library media programs and academic achievement. Most studies of this relationship were conducted between 1959 and 1979, were limited in scope, and usually used a small number of subjects in a limited geographical area. This study was designed both to update the existing research and to examine the relationship between library media programs and student achievement.
METHODOLOGY
Ideally, schools included in the sample for a study such as this would be selected on a random, stratified, or quota basis. None of these sampling designs was possible, because schools included in the sample had to have library media centers that responded to the 1989 survey of school library media centers in Colorado and had to use the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS) or Tests of Achievement and Proficiency (TAP). These data were available for only 221 of 1,331 public elementary and secondary schools in Colorado during the 1988-89 school year. The study relied entirely upon available data about school library media centers and their school and community contexts to predict norm-referenced test scores.

From one report: "The Justice in Palestine Coalition held a powerful action today at the entrance to SBC (Pac-Bell) Park calling into question what there is to celebrate about 56 years of racist colonialism, displacement, and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians. As people entered the event to 'celebrate' the anniversary of the formation of the state of Israel, the demonstrators passed out leaflets which listed the crimes against the Palestinian people." District School Library Media Center Plan
The goal of the Palermo Union School District’s School Library Media Center Plan is to ensure that students and staff know how to locate, analyze, evaluate, interpret, and communicate information and ideas. Developing the ability to think clearly, critically, and creatively depends on a steady flow of information, both from direct firsthand perceptions, and from perceptions filtered and communicated through media using the language of voice, image, print, and gesture. It is the intent of the District School Library Media Center Plan to foster a program which provides an abundance of appropriate learning resources in many formats. This plan is a developmental plan that must be considered as a living document. As such, it will change as needs are met and further assessments are conducted to identify additional needs. District Vision Statement The Palermo Union School District together with students, families, and community in a cooperative effort will provide an excellent educational program to ensure that all students are provided the opportunity to become life-long learners, in a safe, caring, moral, and supportive environment that prepares students for leadership, employment, and citizenship.
