With the assistance of a consulting Registered Dietitian (RD), we provide a comprehensive nutrition program that includes not only monitoring menus, but an entire education schedule. We will customize a program for the specific needs of each individual. Our efforts will focus on different types of nutrition education through varied channels of communication to maximize participation. A Nutrition Newsletter will be published and distributed quarterly on campus. Our newsletter will include healthy eating tips, highlight upcoming menus and special events, and include current national trends. Physical Activity, Nutrition and Obesity Conference Program Presentations
A Healthy Active Oregon: Launching Our Statewide Nutrition and Physical Activity Plans was held on February 11, 2003 in Portland. Conference participants learned about the current obesity and chronic disease epidemic from three exciting and informative opening speakers and participated in four 15-minute interactive discovery sessions to experience the current environmental conditions necessitating the need for the plans. A motivating lunch time speaker was followed by two 50-minute workshops where participants had an opportunity to discuss implementation of the plans with a 25-minute physical activity break in between. The conference was closed with presentations from two inspiring Oregon speakers. Presentation contents and materials are available below for most sessions (some presentations did not include handouts or files and in some cases, the speaker referenced web sites).

Weight problems are serious
Being fat and jolly is more than a cosmetic problem; it is a health hazard. Approximately 280,000 adult deaths in the United States each year are related to obesity. Several serious medical conditions have been linked to obesity, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke. Obesity is also linked to higher rates of certain types of cancer. Obese men are more likely than non-obese men to die from cancer of the colon, rectum, or prostate. Obese women are more likely than non-obese women to die from cancer of the gallbladder, breast, uterus, cervix, or ovaries. Many insurance plans do not provide reimbursement for weight loss treatment. According to many practitioners, few private insurance indemnity plans or managed care organizations appear to cover the costs of obesity treatment regardless of whether the service is a medically supervised program of weight reduction or maintenance, nutrition counseling, surgery or a pharmaceutical product. The countless number of available insurance plans and ever changing policies have made it difficult to assess the extent to which obesity treatment and prevention services are covered by third party insurers. More data and better tracking is necessary to determine the health needs of persons with obesity.

Tuesday, November 25, 2003 Get Media Assistance Children's Health, Nutrition, Child Care to Suffer under New Governor's Thanksgiving Week Proposals Budget Approach Compares Unfavorably with Solutions in Other States Even as one in seven California children goes without health insurance, ranking California 45th among states in the rate of uninsured children, Schwarzenegger has proposed freezing enrollment in the state's Healthy Families program, which provides health care to children in low-income families at modest monthly premiums. During his election campaign, Schwarzenegger highlighted the need for uninsured children to be enrolled in the program and stated, "We have to make sure that every child in California is insured; that is the most important thing." Cuts in payments to health care providers under the Medi-Cal health insurance program also have been proposed, increasing the likelihood that poor families will be forced to seek care in emergency rooms or go without health services as doctors drop out of the program.

New additions to the Food and Nutrition Program website: NCIDC administers a statewide California Food and Nutrition Program (CFNP) targeted at the coordination of existing public and private food assistance resources, to assist low-income Tribal communities to identify potential sponsors of child nutrition programs. The CFNP also initiates new programs in underserved or unserved areas, and develops innovative approaches at the state and local levels to meet the nutrition needs of low-income Indian people. The CFNP works directly with Tribes and Indian organizations to develop nutrition education programs and inform tribal governments and Indian communities of nutrition programs available to them. One of the desired outcomes of this informational project is to get more Indian communities to participate in programs such as the Summer Food Program and the School Breakfast Program. The program has compiled and distributed pertinent food and nutrition newsletters and information to California Tribes and community based organizations on a monthly basis. This information includes, for example, low-fat recipes, exercise ideas, healthy tips, and other related information. Over 80 different tribes and Indian organizations have been served through this distribution component of the program.

Lifetime wellness or health is dependent upon a myriad of factors, many of which are lifestyle related. In fact, close to 80% of the leading chronic illnesses may be prevented through lifestyle changes. The primary mission of the Nutritional Science Program is to educate and train individuals to become entry level health professionals at the Bachelor's and the Master's levels. In this capacity, graduates can promote positive, personal behavior changes and environmental changes which impact upon the health of the individual. The diverse academic field of nutrition enables students to become specialized in dietetics and nutrition, community nutrition, alternative nutrition, and foodservice management or food technology. Students completing the Nutrition Option or Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) are eligible to apply for dietetic internships. In addition, students who complete the Coordinated Dietetics Program (CDP) are eligible to take the registration exam to become Registered Dietitians. The

A Short Cut for Repairing AORTIC ANEURYSMS The aorta is the body’s largest blood vessel. Extending from the heart to the navel, it eventually branches out into the legs, carrying blood to the entire lower portion of the body. But a lot can happen along this circulatory superhighway, including the development of aneurysms—weakened areas in the wall of the artery that can be life-threatening.
