http://www.californiaprojectlean.org/leangis/
With the growing number of health, demographic and environmental databases containing local, regional and national data, California Project LEAN (Leaders Encouraging Activity and Nutrition) saw the opportunity to merge this information with GIS technology to create a unique and useful tool to benefit all areas of public health, especially the area of nutrition. When it was created in 1997, the LEAN Geographic Information System (GIS) was the only GIS site with demographic data, nutrition education programs, and other resources specific to California. California Project LEAN developed the LEAN GIS application through funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In 2003, LEAN GIS received an Exemplary System award from California Geographic Information Association for this innovative tool to assist local health professionals and community partners to effectively meet the nutrition-related needs of low-income Californians. This interactive, internet-based mapping application allows users to view and query mapped nutrition data. The application contains a rich set of nutrition and other health related data, including:
  • Nutrition and school health programs National School Lunch Program participation in CA WIC grocery stores and other local nutrition resources Demographics (race and spoken language) of general and at-risk populations Political (senate and assembly) districts
This application is now being overseen by the California Nutrition Network and can be accessed at

L.A. Farmers' Markets Go High-Tech to Promote Fruit and Vegetable Consumption LOS ANGELES-.-04/28/2004 Addition of Food Stamp's EBT at L.A. County Certified Farmers' Markets Improves Access for Recipients of Food Assistance A consortium of Los Angeles County certified farmers' markets announced today that 22 farmers' markets throughout L.A. County will begin accepting Food Stamp Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards, also known as the Golden State Advantage Card, as a convenient method of payment. The effort is part of a statewide campaign to improve health through nutrition education and lifestyle changes, particularly among socioeconomic and ethnic groups that suffer disproportionate rates of hunger, obesity and chronic disease. "We know that families in poor neighborhoods throughout L.A. County often have trouble buying fresh fruits and vegetables because of a lack of grocery stores," said Pompea Smith, CEO of Sustainable Economic Enterprises-Los Angeles and director of the Hollywood Farmers' Market. "Most farmers' markets have traditionally accepted food stamps, but this new technology presented a unique challenge to the cash-only markets, which lack access to electricity and phone lines. Overcoming this obstacle, with the help of state and county Departments of Social Services and community advocates, allows markets to continue the work of providing fresh fruits and vegetables to all income levels."

of approximately 1 million california students, generating development for schoolsitenutrition and physical to strengthen school health programs and services
http://www.cahperd.org/news/CA_Fact_Sheet.html
CALIFORNIA COORDINATED SCHOOL HEALTH FACT SHEET For the past seven years, California has received a small grant ($450,000/year) from the Centers for Disease Control and PreventionÕs (CDC) Division of Adolescent School Health (DASH) to promote coordinated school health. With these limited funds, CaliforniaÕs school health program has made a tremendous difference for children and youth. An additional $10 million for CDC-DASH is needed in 2004 for this work to continue in California and other states. Its termination will clearly have a detrimental impact, ultimately manifesting itself in declines in academic achievement and increased costs for health care and social services. CDC-DASH funding has resulted in significant accomplishments in California. During the last seven years, the coordinated school health program has: Demonstrated a strong relationship between studentsÕ test scores in physical fitness and reading/math, with a study of approximately 1 million California students, generating national interest. Developed a model physical activity program for after school programs to increase the quality and quantity of childrenÕs physical activity (http:// www.afterschoolpa.com); this new Web site has been highly utilized.
