    Background
The child care community needs fast and easy access to reliable information on health and safety that is up-to-date and reflects the most current thinking on best practices. The Healthline's goal, therefore, is to support the provision of quality child care through professional consultation and by linking health and safety professionals and resources to the child care provider community. In this way, the Healthline works to improve health outcomes for children so that they are ready and able to learn. The Healthline provides health and safety information to child care providers, the families they serve, and related professionals in California using a toll-free telephone line. The Healthline team of specialists consults on issues such as infectious disease, health promotion, behavioral health, serving children with disabilities and other special needs, nutrition, infant-toddler development, car seat safety, lead poisoning prevention and many other issues. In addition, bilingual public health nurses are available to respond to the Spanish speaking community.

Program Overview The CHDP program is a preventive health program serving California's children and youth. CHDP makes early health care available to children and youth with health problems as well as to those who seem well. Many children and youth in California have unmet health needs. Through the CHDP program, eligible children and youth receive periodic preventive health assessments. Children and youth with suspected problems are then referred for diagnosis and treatment. Many health problems can be prevented or corrected, or the severity reduced, by early detection and prompt diagnosis and treatment. CHDP works with a wide range of health care providers and organizations to ensure that eligible children and youth receive appropriate services. These CHDP providers include private physicians, local health departments, schools, nurse practitioners, dentists, health educators, nutritionists, laboratories, community clinics, nonprofit health agencies, social and community service agencies.

According to the National Institutes of Health, sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy eating are linked to an increased risk of more than 20 physical ailments as well as a number of psychological problems. Specifically, poor eating and activity habits are major contributors to cancer, coronary heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and stroke. Even though doctors and nurses may routinely provide their patients with nutrition education, according to the Journal of Pediatric Nursing "this short exchange of nutrition education is not sufficient to treat nor prevent such a complex and multi-factorial condition." Physical activity and nutrition are complex behaviors that are inextricably linked to the environments in which we live, work and play.. While education is one part of the solution, community-level interventions to improve the environments where people make choices about what to eat or how to get active are essential to improving overall health and well-being. Prevention Institute views poor physical activity and eating habits not primarily a result of individual choices and behaviors, but rather the result of living in an environment that does not support making healthier choices. We focus our efforts on identifying ways to improve community environments (e.g., community design, access to parks and safe public facilities), increase accountability among government and industries involved in food systems (e.g., use of public funds, sustainability, and marketing practices), and encourage media responsibility to support healthy behaviors through changes in policy and organizational practices.

The National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity (NANA) advocates national policies and programs to promote healthy eating and physical activity to help reduce the illnesses, disabilities, premature deaths, and costs caused by diet- and inactivity-related diseases such as heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity. NANA promotes within the legislative and executive branches of government a better understanding of the importance of healthy eating, physical activity, and obesity control to the nation's health and health-care costs. One of the primary goals of NANA is to cultivate champions for nutrition, physical activity, and obesity prevention in Congress and federal agencies. Efforts include supporting effective education programs, advocating adequate funding for programs, and promoting environmental changes that help Americans eat better and be more active. NANA is made up of more than 250 organizations. NANA's policy priorities include:

who we are N utritional Counseling Nutrition counseling consists of a series of consultations, in person or on the phone. After a clinical evaluation and assessment of your health history, Dr. Thompson creates a personalized health program for you and/or your family. This consists of a precise, yet flexible, arrangement of foods, food supplements, and suggestions for vital therapies and lifestyle habits that result in allowing the normal functioning of the body to take place. When this balance is achieved, health vitality and well-being are the result, and sickness and disease are dismissed.
    Why is this so important?
We are creatures of habit. Our habits determine our levels of health and well-being and these, in turn, determine the quality and length of our lives. Knowing the differences between habits that are beneficial to health, habits that are offending, and why , are the most important things you and your children will ever learn.

    Special Terms
FOOD FADDISM : A general term used to designate nutrition nonsense. Food faddism is characterized as much by its exaggerations as absolute errors about nutrition and diet. QUACK : "Anyone who promotes medical schemes or remedies known to be false, or which are unproven, for a profit."* (U.S. House of Representatives, May, 1984). *In the opinion of the NCAHF offering such goods or services for a donation or through alleged "nonprofit" schemes still constitutes quackery. NUTRITION QUACKERY : Utilizing invalid methods for assessing an individual's nutritional status, or promoting the use of food supplements, nutrition substances or special diets that lack reasonable scientific evidence of safety and effectiveness to cure, treat or prevent disease, increase longevity, enhance physical, sexual, or mental performance. DEGREE MILL : "An organization that awards degrees without requiring its students to meet educational standards for such degrees established and traditionally followed by reputable institutions." (U.S. Office of Education, March 1974). "Degree mill" and "diploma mill" are used synonymously.
    The Problem
The laudable increased interest in health and nutrition on the part of the public is being exploited by unqualified "nutritionists" advertising themselves as "consultants" or "counselors." In reality, such people are salespersons with spurious credentials obtained through diploma mills or certification mills.
