Nutrition services provide a vital link in maintaining the health of older Californians by preventing premature institutionalization and improving their overall quality of life. The California Department of Aging administers nutrition services funded by the federal Older Americans Act and state general fund dollars through the network of Area Agencies on Aging and their service providers. They serve Californians 60 years of age or older, with preference given to those in greatest economic or social need and to low-income multi-ethnic individuals. Participants are provided an opportunity to contribute to the cost of the meal. Meals must meet nutritional standards by providing a minimum of one-third of the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA).
    • Title III C-1: Congregate Nutrition Services provide meals in a group setting. Services also include nutrition and health promotion education, and opportunities for socialization. People eligible for Title III C-1 nutrition services are 60 years of age or older, individuals with a handicap or disability who meet specific criteria, spouses of eligible participants regardless of age, and volunteers who provide needed services during meal hours. Project facilities and operations conform to health and safety standards and provide safe, wholesome and nutritious meal services to our older clients.

Physical Activity and Nutrition Updated November 2003
Physical inactivity and unhealthy eating are behaviors that often have an adverse impact on health. Together they are responsible for at least 300,000 preventable deaths each year. Regular physical activity provides short-term benefits, such as alleviating symptoms of anxiety and depression, and reduces long-term risks for disability and premature death. Despite the proven benefits of being physically active, more than 60 percent of American adults do not engage in levels of physical activity necessary to provide health benefits ( see physical activity postcard ). Good nutrition also lowers a person's risk for many chronic diseases. However, a considerable gap remains between recommended dietary patterns and what Americans actually eat. Only about one-fourth of U.S. adults eat the recommended five or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day. NUTRITION COUNSELING SERVICES
Nutrition counseling consists of a series of consultations, in person or on the phone. After a clinical evaluation and assessment of your health history, Dr. Thompson creates a personalized health program for you and/or your family. This consists of a precise, yet flexible, arrangement of foods, food supplements, and suggestions for vital therapies and lifestyle habits that result in allowing the normal functioning of the body to take place. When this balance is achieved, health vitality and well-being are the result, and sickness and disease are dismissed.
    Why is this so important?
We are creatures of habit. Our habits determine our levels of health and well-being and these, in turn, determine the quality and length of our lives. Knowing the differences between habits that are beneficial to health, habits that are offending, and

    Overview
A primary focus of the research at the NIEHS Center at the University of California, Berkeley has been to understand the relationship between DNA damage and disease. The objective of this research was to discover ways to prevent or mitigate such damage. In particular, Center researchers investigated DNA repair pathways and the influence of gene-environment interactions as contributors to the disease process.
The COEP has a particular emphasis in 2002 on the role of nutrition as an environmental agent in itself, and as a modifier of the effects of other environmental agents. While the COEP will continue to have a substantial focus on nutritional factors in its outreach activities, it will also address other environmental factors of importance to the community or other Center researchers in 2003. Specifically, the COEP will forge a link to the Oakland Community Based Public Health Initiative (OCBPHI), and establish a cooperative relationship with the Community Health Academy in Oakland

If you would like to make a contribution or donation, please contact the BUSD Nutrition Network Program office at What is the Network? The California Nutrition Network (CNN) is a campaign to promote healthy eating and a physically active lifestyle, administered by the Cancer Prevention and Nutrition Section of the California Department of Health Services. Why is this campaign important?
In the United States, childhood obesity has doubled in the past ten years and in the past five years, childhood Type II diabetes has tripled. These health problems, in turn, increase the risk to cancer and other types of chronic disease such as heart disease and stroke. According to a 1993 study (McGinnis), one in four deaths can be attributed to poor diet and inactivity. In addition, a 1996 Harvard Report on Cancer Prevention revealed that adult diet and obesity are the second cause of cancer, after tobacco. To turn the tide towards better health, programs such as the gardening and cooking classes provide experience-based nutrition education, teach life skills, improve students' abilities to learn, and help instill healthier eating and exercise habits that will make a difference in their adult health.

Everybody Eats! Breakfast for Learning A California Child Nutrition Task Force Campaign In early 2002, Sharon Davis, First Lady of California, convened the California Child Nutrition Task Force. The Task Force is a blue ribbon committee consisting of major stakeholders aligned around children's nutrition, health and educational opportunity. The Task Force is committed to expanding participation in the federal child nutrition programs in California. These are the best available resources with which to prevent the unconscionable presence of childhood hunger and to combat rising obesity in California today. The Task Force's campaign will initially focus on the School Breakfast Program. Despite its well-documented importance to nutrition and academic performance, this federally funded entitlement program is severely underutilized. More than one million low-income California children who have been certified for free and reduced-price school meals miss out on school breakfast. These children are the primary target for the Task Force's campaign.

    Dairy Council of California
Nutrition education program teaches children how to make healthy food choices
Program receives high marks from teachers, students
Sacramento, CA Nutrition Pathfinders, a multi-feature nutrition education program offered by the Dairy Council of California, teaches grade-school students how to keep their bodies strong and healthy. Students learn how to select foods based on the food guide pyramid and about the importance of physical activity. Recent evaluation confirms the program's benefits for teachers and students alike. Using a variety of tools to engage students including an interactive CD-ROM, activity workbook and web site ( http://www.np.dairycouncilofca.org ), Nutrition Pathfinders serves as tool to help both teachers and students achieve success. The nutrition education program, designed for third, fourth and fifth grade students, aligns with California and National Education Standards and meets core curriculum requirements for math, science, writing and health. Students gain knowledge about healthy eating using critical thinking, problem-solving and character building skills. To determine the program's effectiveness, quantitative evaluation was conducted in spring 2003 with approximately 400 students and 25 teachers in California. Conclusions show that after using Nutrition Pathfinders, students improved their knowledge about the food guide pyramid and healthy eating. Almost half of the students (49%) reported eating less extra foods, more grains (44%), and milk and dairy (40%). Approximately one-third of the students increased consumption of meats, beans and nuts (34%), vegetables (39%), and fruits (25%).
