currently a private office
grant amount: $7,000
architectural style: Mission/Spanish Colonial Revival
architect: Hugh Y. Davis
Oakdale was established when early landowners provided a right of way and land for the Stockton and Visalia Railroad in 1872; it became an excursion destination where visitors from valley towns strolled through the oak groves and along the canals. Today travelers pass through Oakdale as they hurry to Yosemite, Stanislaus River, or the Sierra on highways 108 and 120. The trim stucco old Carnegie library, Mission Revival with Classical elements, is now used for offices. It is located a block from the main intersection at F and Yosemite streets, at the southwest corner of F and Church streets.
The Shakespeare Club began a subscription library in Oakdale in 1901 but efforts of the Women's Club to seek Carnegie funding were rebuffed by the city trustees; some opposed "tainted money" and others thought the library "an extravagance." In 1912 Oakdale became part of the new Stanislaus county library system which applied for grants for several branches. A grant of $7000 was received in 1916, and the women donated the lot. Hugh Y. Davis designed the building. When the library moved to new quarters in 1974, the building was sold and since then has housed a number of professional and commercial enterprises.

Directory of Affiliated Libraries
at the University of California, Berkeley
Introduction
Library resources on the Berkeley campus of the University of California are rich and varied. They are also physically dispersed and administratively decentralized. Fully utilizing these resources requires an understanding of the three major types of library organization on the campus: the General Library system (henceforth referred to as The Library,), the Affiliated Libraries, and informally managed departmental collections which do not employ academic librarians and offer limited services. This online directory is compiled as a source of information about the collections and services of the Affiliated Libraries, many of which maintain separate (but highly linked) web sites that run on other Berkeley campus servers.
Organization, Services and Access Policies
The Affiliated libraries are typically connected to particular departments, professional schools, and organized research institutes, and staffed by librarians hired in the University's Librarian series. These libraries are administratively separate from The Library system and from each other. The primary mission of the Affiliated Libraries is to support the teaching and research needs of their respective organizations. Their collections reflect these specialized concerns. The Affiliated Libraries have developed in-depth subject emphases and may use their own subject headings and classification schemes. Some of the Affiliated Libraries collections are currently represented in the University's

Patterson Branch Library 1921-1976
currently a private office
grant amount: $3,000
architectural style: Classical Revival (Type C)
architect: DeColmisnil
In 1908 the heirs of pioneer rancher John Patterson established the Patterson Colony and laid out a town with a plaza encircled by broad tree-lined streets. Las Palmas Avenue is one of the radials; its palms have been replaced by Modesto ash. Located just a block from the plaza is the Carnegie building, Classical Revival with Spanish themes, designated a Patterson Historical Landmark in 1989 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.
Before the arrival of the railroad in 1887, the west side of Stanislaus County had been a sparsely settled area of large holdings. Patterson's heirs installed an innovative irrigation system and solicited settlers from the midwest to their colony where saloons were forbidden. In 1912 Stanislaus County Library established a branch in Patterson, and applied for Carnegie funding for both Riverbank and Patterson. Each community received $3000 in 1917, but construction was postponed until after the war; then the townspeople raised an additional $8000 to complete the library, designed by architect DeColmisnil and built by Burton Morgan in 1921. In 1976 the County built a new library and under terms of their donation, the land and building reverted to the Patterson Land Company . They in turn sold to private interests and the Carnegie has since served as a real estate office, artists gallery, and professional offices.

One such book on the shelves of a Los Angeles school library, entitled "Asbestos," describes the cancer-causing building material as "our friend." "At the time in 1941 when this book was published, we didn't know the harmful side effects," said library supervisor Bonnie O'Brian.
