Baja California Rock Art Dated to 7,500 Years Ago John Roach
for National Geographic News
July 17, 2003
The giant rock art murals that grace the walls of hundreds of shelters and caves found in the hardscrabble hills of the high sierra in Baja California Sur, Mexico, date back as far as 7,500 years ago, according to data from an ongoing study of the area. The ancient dates for the paintings cast little light on the mystery of who made them and why, but it suggests that whoever the painters were they came well before the Aztecs established their culture in central Mexico in the 12th century A.D. Read the full Above, the rock paintings in Baja California Sur, Mexico, considered to be 7,500 years old. The artists of the paintings are unknown, but researchers, funded in part by the National Geographic Society's Committee for Research and Exploration , are uncovering hundreds of new sites, which may reveal the background of the people who painted them.

Deep-Sea "Nursery" Found Off California John Pickrell in England
for National Geographic News
September 23, 2003 Researchers are still in the dark about most aspects of deep-ocean life, and perhaps least known are the breeding strategies of deep-sea fish. Now, researchers carrying out geological work off the coast of California have uncovered a completely new type of brooding site. At the Gorda Escarpment, 100 miles (160 kilometers) off the coast and one mile (1,600 meters) below the surface, octopus and fish aggregate densely in the darkness of the ocean floor to lay eggs and care for young. The brooding site may be a totally new type of deep-sea biological hot spot, teeming with life in the otherwise sparsely populated depths. Read the full Underwater video from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute's remotely operated vehicle Tiburon showing three octopus brood their eggs on a rock outcrop along the Mendocino Escarpment, offshore of northern California. Also on the rock are a deep-sea crab and several types of sea anemones. This photograph suggests some of the abundance and diversity of marine life found around the undersea nursery areas along the escarpment.

WORLD HISTORY, CULTURE, AND GEOGRAPHY: THE MODERN WORLD Students in grade ten study major turning points that shaped the modern world, from the late eighteenth century through the present, including the cause and course of the two world wars. They trace the rise of democratic ideas and develop an understanding of the historical roots of current world issues, especially as they pertain to international relations. They extrapolate from the American experience that democratic ideals are often achieved at a high price, remain vulnerable and are not practiced everywhere in the world. Students develop an understanding of current world issues and relate them to their historical, geographic, political, economic, and cultural contexts. Students consider multiple accounts of events in order to understand international relations from a variety of perspectives. 10.1 Students relate the moral and ethical principles in ancient Greek and Roman philosophy, in Judaism, and in Christianity to the development of Western political thought.
