See more " unwrapped " panoramas QuickTime VR is a revolutionary technology pioneered by Apple Computer that allows you to interact with an image - you can look up, down, right, left, even around behind, and zoom in and out. It is the next best thing to being there. Needless to say, this is a technology with immense implications for teaching and learning about geography and environment. These images were all created from photographs of actual places. Requires QuickTime . This free software from Apple Computer, available for Macintosh or Windows, is necessary to view the panoramas. Download it before viewing. The panoramas on this site are a selection drawn from the much larger collection on Don Bain's Virtual Guidebooks website. Virtual Guidebooks contains over 3000 virtual reality panoramas spanning western North America from Hawaii to Wyoming, from the Arctic Ocean to Baja California. It is extensively cross-referenced and searchable. The panoramas on Virtual Guidebooks are larger and more detailed than the ones here. dbain@virtualguidebooks.com

Virtual Fillmore Homepage
Fillmore is located in Southern California, northwest of Los Angeles. It is located in the Santa Clara River Valley, just north of the river along Highway 126. Highway 126 connects Fillmore to Ventura and Highway 101 in the west and Santa Clarita and Interstate 5 in the east. Highway 101 and Interstate 5 are each approximately twenty miles from Fillmore. To the north of the town lie the mountains of Los Padres National Forest. Mexican explorer Don Gaspar de Portola was sent in 1769 to explore Alta (Upper) California. On August 8 of that year, he and his contingent camped in the Santa Clara Valley near the site of present-day Fillmore. He met several groups of Native Americans who lived in the valley. Under Mexican rule, the area became part of the Rancho Sespe Mexican land grant. A mini gold rush occurred along the river in 1842 (several years before Northern California's gold rush). In 1848 the region became part of the United States and explorer John C. Fremont mapped the valley, which was densely covered with wild mustard. As part of the expansion of the western railroad network, the Southern Pacific Railroad built its coastal line through the Santa Clara Valley in 1886 and 1887. In 1887 an old boxcar was utilized as the town's first train station. The town was named after J.P. Fillmore, the railroad's superintendent, and a town plot map was filed with Ventura County in 1888.

Welcome to Virtual Fillmore! This site is the end result of my project for Geography 672, a graduate seminar in geography at California State University, Northridge In this course, taught by Dr. William Bowen , we focused on roads and the buildings which lie along side them. I decided to photograph and describe Central Avenue in Fillmore, California. This is what Fillmore looked like in May 1998. This site will not be updated because it is a snapshot in time. Fillmore appealed to me with its small town atmosphere and mix of old, renovated, and new buildings. Fillmore is a great representation of an early California town. The commercial district of the town began on Main Street, across from the train station. It expanded onto Central Avenue in the late 1910s. This site includes photographs and short descriptions of every building on Central Avenue. Central Avenue, and most of downtown Fillmore, has some unique features that you'll want to be watching for as you virtually stroll downtown. First, the palm trees. The palm trees are classic symbols of Southern California and are used to line Central Avenue and Central Park at

A series of low mountains known as the Coast Ranges extends along the 1,200-mi (1,930-km) coast. The region from Point Arena, N of San Francisco, to the southern part of the state is subject to tremors and sometimes to severe earthquakes caused by tectonic stress along the San Andreas fault . The Coast Ranges receive heavy rainfall in the north, where the giant cathedrallike redwood forests prevail, but the climate of these mountains is considerably drier in S California, and S of the Golden Gate no major rivers reach the ocean. Behind the coastal ranges in central California lies the great Central Valley , a long alluvial valley drained by the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers. In the southeast lie vast wastelands, notably the

CALIFORNIA'S GEOGRAPHY CREATES CHALLENGES FOR BROADCASTERS
Los Angeles may be the world's entertainment capital, but it is a difficult area to place television and radio antennas for broadcasting. The metropolitan area spreads out from the Pacific Ocean to Southern California's upper and lower deserts over valleys, mountains, canyons and coastal plains. While this unique geography offers something for everyone in terms of urban, suburban, houseboat, small-town and even semi-rural living, reception of television and radio signals can be problematic if there is no line-of-sight to a transmitting antenna. The challenge to broadcasters is clear in this perspective view from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission available online at http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/pictures/srtm

G EOGRAPHY at Cal State LA is a program offering opportunities for careers in many different fields. Geography is an ideal discipline for the individual who is interested in either the cultural or physical environment and who enjoys field work and research as well as travel. Geographers practice their knowledge and skills in a diversity of ways, ranging from researching urban or environmental issues to the use of computers and satellite imagery in designing and creating maps. The purpose of the Department of Geography and Urban Analysis is to provide a program within the physical and social sciences that can provide the necessary understanding and skills that will lead to a satisfying and rewarding career after graduation. Whether studying traditional human-land relationships, elements of the physical environment, or contemporary urban problems, the geographer strives towards understanding the complex interrelationships that are part of both the physical and cultural environments. Interpreting the cultural and physical patterns of the earth requires training in both observational and technical skills. The department offers specialized course work in such areas as cartography, computer cartography, computer applications in geography, geographic information systems (GIS), geomorphology, locational analysis, meteorology and climatology, field methods, map reading, air photo interpretation, and remote sensing. These form part of a degree program that offers both variety and specialization.

California. American FactFinder (U.S. Census) California, the "Golden State"
Abbreviation:
CA The name California was first used in 1542 to designate the region by the Spanish expedition led by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo. It was probably derived from a popular Spanish novel published in 1510 in which a fictional island paradise named California was described. California is the third largest state in area after Alaska and Texas. The discovery of gold and the immigration in 1849 of thousands of "forty-niners" in search of the precious metal helped California's admission into the Union in 1850 as the 31st state. Today, California has the highest population of any state in the nation and is America's principal agricultural state. It is also the home of Hollywood, the center of America's movie and television industry.
Many visitors and new residents are attracted by California's outdoor way of life. The warm, dry climate permits outdoor recreation almost the whole year round. The High Sierra Nevada rises near the eastern border. Rocky cliffs and sandy beaches line the shore of the Pacific Ocean in the west. Thick redwood forests cover the Coast Ranges in the northwest. Dramatic deserts stretch across the southeast.
