`HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY OF CALIFORNIA
Unless otherwise noted, these books are by secular publishers and many dealing with history assume that Native Americans inhabited California as long as ten thousand years ago. Bears, Pirates and Silver Lace Tales of Early California by Anne B. Fisher. These stories have become part of the legends of early California authentic tales of friendly Indians and Spaniards, and not so friendly pirates who pillaged along the coast; stories of bears who could never be killed, and soldiers who were afraid of a strange, spotted snake. There are stories of how California sea otters took silk and tea to Boston, how the first piano was brought to Monterey in 1843, and there was a party to celebrate it, and how two staunch little boys defied Southern sentiment and flew the flag at half-mast when they got the news that Abraham Lincoln had been shot twelve stories in all. Most of these stories originated on the Monterey Peninsula and were chosen from many by a class of fourth graders at the Del Monte School. The book was first published in 1944. Trade paper, 134 pages, illustrated with simple line drawings, some in color. Cat#BM. $5.95*

I received no fewer than four less-than-savory emails from indignant southern Californians responding to my last post, which of course was the perfect inspiration for this post. ignorance Despite my public complaints, California is a wonderful place The people have as a popup to facilitate easier back-and-forth between map and legend. A few prefatory words. Maps are fundamentally about shapes. I assume that Californians are aware of the basic shape of the U.S. I also assume that Californians know that there are 50 states and that Alaska and Hawaii are generally not considered part of the continental United States. Being equally a natural science and a social science, geography forms a bridge between the physical and human environments. Large collection of information and links about the peoples, culture, history, geography, identity and politics of the northwest coastal region surrounding the Cascade range, extending from northern california to the Alaskan panhandle.
    http://altacolumbia.com/
var site="s12cascadia" Welcome to AltaColumbia - a Cascadia concepts site C ascadia is the northwest coastal region of North America, including the area surrounding the Cascade mountain range extending from northern California to the Alaskan panhandle, and covers much of Oregon, Washington and British Columbia, Canada. It is the region formed by the interaction of the North Pacific Ocean and North American Continent both in terms of climate and the geological results of plate tectonics. S cottish explorer David Douglas named the Cascades for the great waterfalls made by the Columbia River as it roars through the Columbia Gorge. The Cascades later became the name for the mountain range that makes the north-coastal rainforest possible as it precipitates the warm Pacific moisture-laden air as rain and snow. When the drainage basins of this area are included, Cascadia extends eastward beyond the Cascade range to the headwaters of the rivers that flow through it from the western slopes of the Rocky Mountains.
C ascadia includes the northcoast watersheds from the Redwood forests in Northern California to the Sitka spruce valleys of the Alaska panhandle and is the home of the massive fir trees that are named after David Douglas. Because of the domination of the Columbia River watershed on the north coast landscape, the name "Columbiana" is also used for describing the vast drainage basin of Columbia, Snake and Kootenay rivers.

Email: cartier@usc.edu I studied geography at Berkeley with a focus on human-environment relations in general and research interests in cultural, urban, and economic geography and Asian area studies. I have since continued to work on urban transformation and regional development in Asia, in south China, Malaysia, and Singapore, and have become more interested in contemporary theoretical debates in human geography and the interdisciplinary arenas of transnationalism and globalization. My recent research is divided among five main areas: urban and regional development, and especially the implications of ‘megadevelopment’ projects in south China and Malaysia; gender and development, with a focus on the changing status of women in China under reform; landscape symbolism and interpretation, currently, the symbolic qualities of the new built environment in China and Malaysia; international environmentalism, with a focus on impacts of development on wetlands along Asian coasts; and travel/tourism, mobility, and labor migration, in the larger contexts of globalizing processes. I enjoy working with students at all levels, and see graduate studies especially as a kind of partnership between research student and supervisor and expect the same commitment from by students that I try to give them. Much of my teaching interests have been influenced by discussion with graduate students, and I welcome inquiries from prospective graduate students interested in any of the areas noted above or related fields
